I put my order in for The Spirit of Roanoke. I'm still considering the passenger cars.

ScaleTrains is saying on Facebook that the nose height issue on the N&W SD45 is just a preproduction error and they have new samples on the way to photograph. This doesn't explain the high hood issue in previous releases however. We shall see.

I put my order in for The Spirit of Roanoke. I'm still considering the passenger cars. Assuming they don't monkey with the car tooling too much, I highly recommend the cars. MTH did a darn nice job on them.

Hopefully they do address this on this run! Yeah I may get a couple N&W if they correct it.

No firebox flicker, no change to the drivers appearance with that thick metal around the wheels, no ground light, the exact same car numbers on all of the passenger cars. There are so many ways to have made a good penny on these and not many opportunities were seized. I am not spending all of that $ on an ESU decoder and two speakers being the only differences from my MTH sets that is for sure. It seems this release is designed to just rake in money to recoup from the purchase of MTH and that is fine but I am sitting this one out.

I'm fine with this dying like smoke units There are functions for both features on many models and some people like them. One extra LED lead of the board is all it would take to make many modelers happy so why not include it. Smoke units will never die, there are actually plans in the works for more smoke features on diesel and steam by companies so like I said I just turn it off if I don't like it.

Yeah, smoke units can go away.
Every club I have been a part of had a ban on them for several reasons.

I find the smell of the smoke to be a bit foul.

I love smoke units. The MTH one especially, since it uses an optical cam for perfect sync. Hopefully Scale Trains was able to keep that feature when they bought the tooling.
Edit: I also love firebox flicker. If someone would make a Tinplate set in HO scale, I would buy that too. I would love if HO scale was actually "1/2 O Scale", and all of the idiosyncrasies that come with it.

a couple of nimrods at the club were constantly running smoke units when they shouldn't have been, that shit leaves specs of oil all over scenery and any weathered cars down wind of it. gimmick toy train nonsense.

An extra-cost item that deposits unburnt & partially burnt hydrocarbons on your rails, walls, ceiling, windows, carpet, dog. Then dust & dirt stick to the microscopic oil spots. Same with those tabletop scented oil smudge pots.
The biggest problem is that smoke from a generator does not look like "prototype" smoke. Modeling smoke is like modeling a beach with 8 ft waves.
I'm not seeing any upside.

I rather like the option to smoke. Sound is similar. I like it. I prefer it. But sometimes I just turn the noise off. Same with smoke. Anyway since I don't own this particular model but admire it, this seems the perfect time to give it a go.

Indeed, only righteous, overweening, condescending, patronizing, supercilious toy train nonsense permited on the ARF.

All those enjoying themselves in a non-approved manner will be forced to count rivets. And staybolts. And track spikes.
Unless they also enjoy THAT.
In that case, they'll be forced to watch others counting same, but doing it all wrong.

Smoke and sound; what you do in the privacy of your own home is up to you. Club setting, need to abide by the rules of the member's.
