OK so I have taken the 6 most likely and most popular guesses for what locomotive will be released on November 8th at Trainfest. Just take a minute and click which one you think it will be. My pick is definitely the GP39X/49 as the new locomotive. What is your pick?

Not for nothing, Al, but isn't this new loco supposed to be a first in plastic? And didn't Walthers make a low-nose GP9? And if the box photos are of the actual new loco boxes, then wouldn't it eliminate the SD50/60F and SD60E? (shrug) I dunno. What I do know is that is will probably not be for me since it's supposed to be freight-only.

Well I would have put up just TWO REAL POSSIBILITIES Paul but I did not want to drown the guys who believe it is a SD locomotive. It is NOT. The only REAL two choices is actually the GP20C-ECO or the GP39X/49. The correct answer is what you and I both chose though. Let's see what guys still will choose the other 4 "choices" LOL

Hello Al,
I'm guessing GP39X/49. If I'm not mistaken, Athearn already produced a Genesis GP38-2. So wouldn't it be logical that management take advantage of a genesis chassis that needs little tweaking? The tooling/mold for the body might be modifiable, at a low cost, to produced the correct shells as well.
Just my guess.

Seeing how Athearn is complaining about the lack of sales/reservations on certain southeastern announced roadnames - and SRR/NS GP38-2s don't seem to be selling well either - I doubt if it is any NS unit except perhaps SD60E (to capitalize on the other non-boring NS unit - the Veterans one)...
IMHO Either the SDL39 or the SD60F will sell several times as well as any NS unit other than the Veterans SD60E...
By the way, really doubtful on the GP49 as Alaska (owner of all the standard ones) is definitely a western railroad... And Athearn has said the unit is not western. The 6 units that were GP39X units (internally updated later to GP49) are now passenger units on Tri-Rail which does not fit Athearn's description of not being a passenger unit.

By the way, the guy who did the photoshoot (Mr. Patterson) has said over on the Athearn Facebook comments that the boxes shown are NOT for the locomotive he shot. So don't rule out a 6-axle unit because of those short boxes in the photo. Those boxes (and probably the NS cars too) were likely done to trick you...

If the cab was as high as the long hood they might have sold more. Having bought the first four Southern units only to find the "almost high hood" feature, I did not purchase the NS run or any of the GP50s. Even NW/SOU/NS modellers have standards...

How does a mistake like this, on a locomotive that is still on the road today, happen? Surely someone had to look at pre-production test tooling samples and sign off, right? I highly doubt, Athearn just wrote some checks and told the tool maker and the factory and have at and call us when their done! If your Athearn you can't sit and complain that the Southern and NS fans are not stepping up and buying the product. Not when it has a very noticeable error.

None of the above, How about and SD50S, they already have an SD40-2 frame, just need to shorten the SD50 body!

I love the Milwaukee Road and I still don't see Athearn doing an SDL39.
Even though Intermountain has announced Paducah and Tampa rebuilds, if I were a betting man, I'd say Athearn would make more money and sell more models over the production run of the the GP rebuilds, than the SDL39. Throw in the GP rebuilds of BN, CN and CP to add more flavor to the GP rebuild stew all while being able to use the base Genesis chassis.

Of NS units, on demand I would say the C40-9 has more of a shot than GP39X or GP59... I think C&O/CS/CSX GP39 would have more demand than GP39X. And a CSX road slug set even more than that.
The appeal of the SDL39 that some may not be factoring in is that it is a second generation 6-axle unit that will have a really short turning radius, thus well suited for smaller layouts and industrial modules.

I am tired of companies not releasing trains with more bling. Something to appeal to the ballers, shot callers. Those that have 20 inch blades on their Impalas. I hope it's something like this: I'm kidding of course, but I'll be at the show to check things out in person.

James there will be a time when someone with BLING in their pocket will decided to get a HO scale engine made from 18k gold. Not 24k because it will be way to fragile. If I designed it then i would also use a Rolex watch mechanism enlarged for the motor. It will run as smooth as a "Swiss Watch". The headlights will be diamonds of Course! The light would shine from behind the diamonds. The wheels will be made of Platinum too. It will be a $21-25,000 locomotive. It will be a similar price but way better than owning all 20 NS heritage engines by Overland. So who wants to donate some gold so I can make the first prototype?

Does this mean you'd have to do a little "shake the loco" dance to wind it up before you put it on the tracks? That would be getting down before putting down, I believe. Ed

Latest post by Athearn:
"If you count all of the variations of the three primary locomotives we're unveiling at Trainfest, we have a total of EIGHT all-new, never before offered (in plastic) locomotives. We'll have samples of six to share."

Well in 2 days Athearn will make their announcement. I'll be at a pre show event on Friday, if they let me I will post pics on these forums. Just keep this in mind: People will be happy, people will be sad. But there are more announcements to come from manufacturers including Athearn. I wouldn't be surprised if there is an announcement or two at the Amherst train show from a few manufacturers.

Everyone's assuming it's an EMD... Also funny that people are grouping the SD50F and SD60F together. There are a number of differences between the units that would make it necessary to tool up separate bodies for the 50F and 60F, and not just have one with modular parts.

But then, Athearn has never had much to do with Alcos except for the Blue Box PA and PB, and the RS3 they inherited from MDC. It was a real Alco wasteland until Tiger and Stewart came along, although I still have some Life-Like LV "Snowbird" C628s somewhere that I re-powered and slowed down.

Yea, im not holding my breath for a Dash 8-40CMs. I have heard a rumor for a couple years now that Bowser would produce them because they have the correct trucks, but who knows.. Also funny that people are grouping the SD50F and SD60F together. There are a number of differences between the units that would make it necessary to tool up separate bodies for the 50F and 60F, and not just have one with modular parts. HAHA, agreed. I figure if we get one, the other wouldn't be too far along behind it. I must say though, we have been blessed with the Canadian releases from Athearn the past year or so. (38-2W, 40-2/L's) I've been happy. -Rob
