A "bucket list" entry for me is to have a full loco lashup and caboose set for each of the major Conrail predecessor roads. Athearn's release of the EL version of the SDP45 was the nudge I needed to add that road, but unfortunately, I think I'm going to have a tough time with the caboose. Bowser has me covered on the Penn Central caboose front, and P2K gets me by for Reading and Lehigh Valley (and probably CNJ, too, when I get around to that road).
Any suggestions? I seem to remember WrightTrak or some other kit company produced an EL caboose but don't know the specifics.

This is way out of my area of expertise, but Bethlehem Car Works/ Sparrows Point Division made a kit for DL&W wood cabooses (700-800 series), #SP-19. Several were sold used to the DSS&A and I have one of the kits to build that version, which is basically the DL&W instructions, plus DSS&A decals and tips to modify the kit to South Shore duty. I don't see this kit currently listed in either form on the BCW/SPS website, but they may be available through ebay, LHS, hist. society, or otherwise: www.bethlehemcarworks.com/Products/index.html

Thanks for the replies, the JJL Models kit looks the most promising as I model the late 1960s. Would the bay window have been appropriate for that time frame?
I guess now might be as good a time as any to try to tackle a resin model. Fallback is that Atlas model, doesn't look bad even though it's not an EL prototype.

You can email JJL about the date. They are EL pros and they are good about answering.

JohnJ, C301-C350 are good from 1953 - 10/60 for Erie. 10/60 - 4/76 for EL. after 76 D&H had some,CR had the rest. 4TH owners, your own your own. C300 was similar but had 4 windows per side, the Prototype for the C301 cars,CR wrecked it about 1980. some of the C301 cars have been preserved. one was used by CR/CSX with NYC markings awhile back. EDIT-the DL&W Woodie isn't common as an EL Caboose, most seem gone by then; except for C849 which did make it to CR day. DL&W Steel cars were on EL until there wasn't an EL. the Erie C100-C225 or so are good for EL also,a few were sold off, like the cars WAG had. Joe/JJL made some of these other cars, but cant recall which off hand ? maybe it was the Erie 04xxx wood cars ? some of those made it to EL,but were gone by CR day, mostly used in local and Yard service after 63. Built by Magor with Bettendorf Swing Motion Caboose Trucks, built 1929/30 in 2 orders of 25 cars each. PM had similar cars with freight trucks with leaf springs, they went to C&O, built by Magor also. note- dont recall seeing any Wood Cabeese on the East End,but some were there, just never where I was train watching or chasing at the time. only Wood Cabeese seen regularily were L&HR,they lasted to CR also. JohnJ, can also add the "T" series Transfer cabeese of 1968/69 or so. they were built to N&W Plans as EL was part of DERECO then. they were of the Outhouse on a Raft type car. they did have frame differences from the N&W cars but the Cabins were the same. they wouldn't be seen behind SD45,SDP45,SD45-2s regularily, but possibly now and then. some were in storage by CR day. JohnJ, there were also built new for EL cars by ICC,but only know of Brass models that would be accurate. C351-C370,built 9-10/69 with Roofwalks, and End Ladders, most to CR,not sure if D&H got any ? C371-C380,built 1970 with out Roofwalks or End Ladders,to D&H. Walthers had kits lettered for EL in the late 90s,but they were actually Milwaukee cars. the early C301-C350 cars had the most paint schemes,a nice one still had the radio Lightning Bolts, then later they were simplified to just a diamond and EL plus the number. the last scheme of Gray,Yellow,Maroon was Very Sharp. as was the Bi-Centenial Scheme, too bad it came so late, and was rather hard to track down and catch, never did as EL. EL did directly serve ICC at Kenton Ohio. Spikre

Unfortunately and sadly, Joe Loftland of JJL Models has passed away. I found out per the EL email list this morning.
So if you have an order outstanding, cut 'em some slack, I'd expect at best a delay and at worst having it cancelled.

Athearn has the EL Bicentennial Caboose out now. It may not be spot on but it looks nice.

For a mass-produced EL caboose I think the one I'd go with is the Atlas Trainman. Nowhere near close, but possibly workable. Bicentennial is too new for my 1969-era layout. For now I have a P2K Lehigh Valley caboose bringing up the rear.

IMHO the most reasonable stand-in is an Athearn bay-window car. The Trainman car isn't even close, but the bay window is at least visually similar. It's been offered in Erie and EL schemes numerous times both factory paint and Bev-Bel and other aftermarket painters.

the Trainman car is as close to the C100 cars as the Athearn car is close to the C301-350 cars. the Trainman car is a better car overall being tooled in the 2000's. the Wathers car is also better than the Athearn car,is closest to the C371-380 cars,or the C351-370 cars that had the roofwalks removed. Exact cars would be the JJL Resin kits,or brass cars from years back. the Bethleham ex-Lackawanna woodie is good for one car in 1969 period, and needs to be assembled also. have seen a number of converted Athearn SP Bay Window Cars to C301-350 cars and none ever looked completely correct, the taller SP body and fudged Athearn details just dont make a Correct car. they may look OK at 10'+ viewing, but up close they don't look rite. That one is currently in the paint shop getting the rock screens redone. I never liked how the paint on them came out the first time.

The EL Bicentennial Caboose will go nicely with the SDP45.

Yes, but probably not in 1969, the year I model, unfortunately. My SDP-45s would have been brand-new back then.

John, the Grey/Yellow/Maroon scheme didnt show up until at least 1972. I'll see if the 1st car in this terrific scheme can be tracked down. consider also that SCL started the Bi-Centenial craze with their 1776 during 1972. Dan, great looking Cabbies !! cant waith to see the Lima LS10/12. Spikre

Dan, great looking Cabbies !! cant waith to see the Lima LS10/12. Spikre Yeah, I can't either. I don't have it yet. Got to get the three cabooses done for him first. They are on the bench now getting all the holes drilled and flash cleaned up. Several other kits still ahead of these in various states for different customers. I have two F&C kits ready for decals tonight and tomorrow night and 4 cars in the paint booth.

As much as the Lima fascinates me, Dan, I'm intrigued by the Wheeling caboose in the background. Which model is it?
