Got my hands on some Intermountain Maxi VI 53 well cars and when I tried to upgrade to Kadee coupler but I noticed that the coupler housing well is too narrow for #5, 38, what Kadee coupler will fits in this car?

This came up when these cars were first released on the old Atlas forum. The short answer is there is no coupler that fits the Intermountain box. The long answer is, if you are dead set on a Kadee coupler, you'll need to cut the Intermountain box off and install the Kadee in its box. Intermountain took A LOT OF FLAK over this years ago. The second barrage of flak was the use of a NON-Kadee coupler.

Thanks for the quick reply. I modified the kadee coupler by shaving off the material and installed a styrene strip at the edge coupler housing to keep it from drooping down. Needless to say I will not be buying any more intermountain or Atlas trained from here on out

What did Atlas do, or not?

IIRC, Atlas has done a coupler pocket that was an issue for KD installs as well, but only on a few more recent models (like the last 2 or 3 years).
Most of their models will accept KD couplers so hurricanefec may not need to write off the entire line. Atlas makes nice freight cars so it would be a shame to not take advantage of them.
Perhaps someone here can list those particular Atlas cars with the coupler box issue?

Any time I buy any piece of Atlas equipment the first thing I do is to trash the Crap-U-Mate couplers and replace them with Kadees.

Neither have I but I haven't bought any newer tooled Atlas freight cars yet - everything I have from Atlas was tooled probably more than 4 or 5 years ago. Probably the newest tooled Atlas car I have are the 89' flat cars. It might have been during the last year or two of the old Atlas forums that people complained about the coupler pockets on a newly produced Atlas freight car - when I get the chance if I can remember, I'll search for the discussion if someone doesn't post about it here first.

The Atlas gondola from a coupler years ago had the cast on narrow pocket. It used a discontinued Kadee narrow shank coupler. I was lucky and was able to get a few directly from Kadee. IIRC the number was 178, but I could be wrong on that. Bob

I have that gondola and luckily I had a few of the right couplers lying around. The bigger problem I've had is with Atlas is the Berwick boxcar that I was all excited to get because they were actually lettered MNNR, but the coupler pocket is glued on and I can't get it apart.

Which gondola? The Atlas Trainman or another?
