Built an addition to the North Star Sampling works just outside of Silverton. In the foreground is the North Star's assay office, part of a group of 4 houses I built from Grandt Line kits, No Problem Joe's and the Reece St. Houses. In addition to the still-needed roofing on the addition to the mill and various details, I also plan some coal bins for the powerhouse and maybe another addition on the riverside of the original sampling works, a Campbell Stamp Mill kit that was the first building kit I crafted just for this layout 20+ years ago. Here's a pic of another house, with the sampling works in the background, then a pic of the other two houses. No building would be complete without those new-fangled electric lights, some adjustments still required. I had one more train to light, the ultra-modern San Juan Zephyr, shown here in front of Silverton station awaiting passengers gambling at the casino... With the SJZ's markers showing the way, we've got clearance for another great SPF for Easter Sunday. Let's see what you're up to.

A happy Easter to those who are celebrating today. Here are a few shots from the E7 photo shoot. I'm sure John will have more, and his camera was certainly better...his modeling is for sure. Joliet arrival. Somewhere west of Tinley Park. Grab shot at Tinley Park.

Happy Easter Guys! Great stuff as always, here's a few for the week. IMR Scoular hopper, it's probably a bit new for my timeline but when this kit was new the idea of painting and weathering one was just too tempting! Walthers 4427 that I rebuilt the ends on painted for Louis Dreyfus One of the best parts of modeling the Rio Grande is that Western Pacific cars are pretty commonplace since the two roads interchanged at Roper yard in SLC.

Tom: Those pictures of John's E-7 and the RI coaches are impressive. As you get further along with your layout, you will have an great background for the shots. The E-7 and E-8 together make for a "Rock" dream commuter lash up.
Rick like the Pennsy coal trains. Mike, again the night photos are great.
Makes me wish all my stuff was not in storage. Bill

Last week's project was building trees using Supertrees material, gel CA with accelerator, dark gray spray paint, extra-hold hairspray, and Scenic Express ground foam.

The links are all there, but you get either nothing, a big blank rectangle, or a pic, depending on the mood of the server. Check back tomorrow when they get all those gooey candy eggs, chocolate bunnies, and jellybeans dug out of the keyboard over there and set things right.

Thanks everyone for another weekend of inspiring photos! I'm a little late to the party. I spent my weekend on the rails and my phone should be ringing any second to go back out again. But while I wait, here are the models I've worked on in the past couple weeks. First, a Genesis caboose I weathered: Next, an Accurail 4600 cf hopper that I've had about 15 years but dug out of storage to see what I could do with the Plano walkway kit and some styrene rod: Finally, a companion to all my Mopac locomotives, what will become UP 3230. It still needs treadplate and new fans along with some other details, but this is where I am so far:

Nice! The Accurail 4600 looks like a HQ model now - sweet. My hobby time sometimes waits until Monday - my AWS day as the gov calls it. Had to get 2 new tires for the RAV4 to pass inspection this weekend so the wallet is a little light! Working on the layout today - took a break to let the paint dry on the homosote and then will start fitting turnouts into the other end of the yard.

Ryan, nice job on the Accurail covered hopper. Really looks good with the upgrades, comparable to the Intermountain or Atlas 4650 CF cars. The SSW caboose looks good lightly weathered.
Bird, the Covered hoppers look good. Seeing the WP Box was interesting, don't think about that road much back in the east, but a Western Pacific FMC-4700 CHC rolled through Buffalo in its original paint this Sunday.
Rob that tree is great, how did you get the gnarled effect on the trunk. Bill

Rob that tree is great, how did you get the gnarled effect on the trunk. That's a natural piece of sagebrush. It comes that way from nature.

Painted and decaled from an undecorated Kadee PS-1. The decals were created letter by letter exclusive of the herald which is from Microscale set #55. Not heavily weathered in my era, so the model reflects this as well.

Hello Group, Guess I’m a little late for this week’s photo fun. Here is my latest modeling efforts. It’s basically a stock P2K kit that I slightly modified to more accurately match the prototype. I began by lengthening and reshaping the side sills. During this process, I found out that the model does not have the correct number of panels to match accurately Erie’s 65000 series cars. The next challenge was to find the correct “dog leg” shaped stirrup steps. I couldn’t find anyone that makes these, so I carefully bent A-Line #29000 steps to match the prototype as best I could. As far as I could determine, these cars had Apex roof walks, so spare Branchline parts for the roof walk and brake platform were applied. Finally, I added Detail Associates FC 6206 air hoses. The “B” end hose has a more accurate mounting bracket than the simple hole I drilled for the hose on the “A” end. A braked will be fabricated to correct that mistake. It was difficult to find many pictures of this type of car, but I did find two at Fallenflags.org. and someone posted several photos of a surviving Lehigh Valley car on Railfan.net. Erie 65000 side view Erie 65000 "A" endThe most difficult part of this whole process was getting a good match to the brown paint P2K used on the model. I ended up mixing some red with Tamiya XF-10 flat brown. In daylight, this color selection was not a good choice as it was too dark (not red or rust colored enough). You can see I still need to paint-to-match some of the details. There are three more kits in my stash waiting to be built, so if anyone has a paint suggestion that will match the P2K color, please share! Also, the rest of the kits will receive Plano #194 running boards, which look better than the Branchline parts. Thanks, Mark

Mark, one problem with the Proto Erie herald,no Black Background. outside of going to a decal havnt figured out an easy fix for the cars here yet. nice work !! Mike, are the 3' reefers M-T cars, or Kits ? has any one bought the M-T HOn3 line yet ? think they were slightly high in price,so never got any. T-Bird, is the WP 50' floor P2K,or Details West ? was a nice surprise finding out the D-W Evans floor fit in easily. like the Scoular car, that was one of the 1st IMRC Decorated kits built here. ga751, nice S&A car,was the MS set the one with 4000+ CUFT for a 40' car ? used a set on something here a long time ago. Bobby, there were Round Hatch versions of those Southern cars ? well never saw those either. Spikre

SNIP Mike, are the 3' reefers M-T cars, or Kits ? has any one bought the M-T HOn3 line yet ? think they were slightly high in price,so never got any. SNIP Spikre Spikre, The M-T cars came in various configurations. The first one came built, later ones required you to install the grabs, etc. The M-T HOn3 cars were fairly competitively priced vs Blackstone, but people were expecting the grabs etc to be installed at what was asked. That didn't help. AFAIK, M-T announced no plans to sell the line, but also intends to no longer produce HOn3.
