I was waiting for this to happen again.. Per Athearn on Facebook: Please share! We'll be rotating out on Facebook and posting sneak peeks of some of the models to be displayed at the Athearn booth. We will also be unveiling a brand new model and a completely revised one at the show. -CP They have a pic of the Topeka cab decorated and looks great! Lets hope this new unit is something we can all use. Rob Gruber www.dcctrain.com

I would like to see a revised SD40 personally. Or a revised SD40-2 which I think would sell like crazy. Brand new model? - bring on a ACF 4600 or the 4460 covered hopper model please.

I concur with Tim the enchanter. I would be enchanted to see an SD40 out; the ACF hoppers mentioned would be welcome too. Cheers, Jim

I was told that the SD40 WOULD be completely redone, and as a prototype modeler, I'd be really happy with the results. What I wasn't told was when....;-)

That being the case, the only way Athearn could produce more SD40's would be with new tooling - Genesis please! I'm guessing your right, it's just a matter of when.

Oh boy, oh boy! Something to pull the Western Star. If Walthers made a Western Star. Also known as the first lightweight Empire Builder. Instead of just doing a rerun. With the same wrong color(s).
Has anyone pointed out to Jason that the GN was sorta honorary Canadian? Sorta. It did go into Canada, after all.

I've suspect we might see the long requested Genesis SD40-2..It only makes sense since they redid the GP38-2 and GP40-2 in the Genesis line.

Spikre,
GN's West Coast entry into Canada was at Vancouver (the other one). It ran the International up to there--a cute little shorty of a train.
There were another few excursions, including to Winnipeg. GN ran the Winnipeg Limited to there. NP also got up to Winnipeg, but I'm much less familiar with that line.

Completely revised? That would be the Hustler, now with seperately applied prototype specific parts, and a can motor driven carbon fiber band drive, DCC and lighting.
For new models, some more freight cars would be nice. Athearn has loaded us up with motive power, so now we need stuff for it to pull. Like another run of the FGE reefers in original FGE...

It's always easy to think locomotive. I think we'll see some kind of a freight car from Athearn. Like most, I've got my wish list……and way too much stuff already so whatever is announced may likely replace something else from an earlier day or with less detail or prototype need. And, Tangent usually has something interesting as well. Atlas, BLMA, Kato and MTH….we'll see. And there are always surprises….
I work(volunteer) on the NTS floor crew, but I can't say anything until after the show opens. We'll be too busy to post anyway. Lotsa folks floating around with phones though. Well over half the time I read about it online before I actually get to see it.

Maybe a new tank car? What do the RRs run in those oil trains out of North Dakota down to Louisiana? And while we're speculating, has Athearn completely given up on structures? Whatever became of the LAUPT?

If it's a freight car I hope it's something that rides on modern 9' buckeye trucks that are available separately for a reasonable price.

Genesis SD40 is not an IF but a WHEN... Last run of the RTR SD40s (incl WM Chessie and DWP) was canceled and with the cancellation on the dealers sheets was a note that an improved model would follow.

Last Athearn structure I recall was the small rural grain elevator. The $70 MSRP ran off a lot of buyers, and I managed to find one for $35 at a shop that had marked it down a half dozen times trying to sell it... The Santa Fe station was very nice but the $130 price was high.

I am hoping for some Genesis Alco PAs.
If they have them I will buy them on the spot, as I will be these for the whole show with our modular layout.

Dave, I agree some High End Fruit Growers products to go with the Athearn 60' Refrigerator would be nice. The Walthers Car and the earlier Details West car are lame. The FGE cars were all over in the 1970's to the present, with numerous variations. There are still a number around, although not necessarily wearing the original reporting marks. Even a late model Evans Blue Island RBL would be nice. Bill

A few LNAC cars? Way YES!! Probably more likely an Exactrail car though, if they get back to box cars at some point.

The Walthers Car and the earlier Details West car are lame. Bill Lets be fair, the Walthers and Details West cars were decent in their day and a product of their time. Tooling and fidelity has improved significantly since then so it's not a fair comparison, but it does highlight a need to be filled. Cheers, Jim

Jim, I agree, the Details West tooling is almost 30 years old, and the Walthers cars is 20 or so years old. The 40 some year old Athearn 4740 tooling was great for its day but compared to the "current" generation offering from Tangent, it comes up short. Your right it is not a fair comparison. In the day, most cars had molded on detail, rather than separately applied details. That has changed. In fact Details West was one of the first to go with separate details in the late 1970's.
My issue is with the exception of the Athearn 60 foot refrigerator car, there are not many current models of Fruit Growers cars out there. FGE was not the largest builder by any matter of means, but they were a major player in the Insulated car market, and their products made it from coast to coast. It would be nice to have some. Until a few years ago, PC&F was not well represented, but with recent offerings from Athearn Genesis, Red Caboose, Exact Rail, and Intermountain there are a number of very nice Paccar product models out there. For sure. I guess the good news is we have a lot of choices. For those who can afford them, there are nicely detailed cars out there with Tangent and some of ER's upper series as "top shelf", and for those with limited funds, Athearn is still offering slightly upgraded models from the old tooling. I choose the best I can afford, one or two here or there.
I have an affinity for reefers and fruit growers cars, and more new models would be very welcome. I'm particularly happy to see all the PC&F offerings you mentioned and have been patronizing examples from all of those companies! Hopefully we will continue to see more models along these lines!
Cheers, Jim

The FGE cars were all over in the 1970's to the present, with numerous variations. There are still a number around, although not necessarily wearing the original reporting marks. Definitely. I didn't want to give the impression that I was only asking for CSX cars - that's just the current paint scheme that many of them are wearing. Here's a nice example of a fresh-looking SCL car (the Walthers model): SCL 499669: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=511252If it was up to me, that's the next FGE-built prototype that I'd like to see someone produce. It was (is) a fairly common car that traveled around the country wearing the early FGE scheme, the "Solid Cold" scheme, and eventually CSX paint during its lifespan. Dave

Out of curiosity, was the original RPP body tooling cut in steel or aluminum?
