Who here is going to the national train show?
I am going but the date is not nailed down just yet. I'll be there half a day max.
I look forward to meeting some of you.

I'm 3+ hours away, and thinking about it. No interest in staying in Cleveland overnight, so that would make for one long day. Twas much easier in younger years, enjoy it while you still have the energy

If I were 3 hours away, I'd go for it. I used to drive 3.5 hours to Springfield/Amhearst MA. I'm alot farther and it would cost alot for me to go that I can't afford right now... maybe some day.

I will not be able to attend the NMRA National Convention and Train Show this year, but will make it to Portland next year. I attended an NMRA regional convention in June in Salt Lake City and it was a terrific convention. Great layouts, saw Prominatory Point with a re-enactment of the Golden Spike celebration and there were several excellent clinics. I met some wonderful folks. Apparently the 2019 National Convention may be awarded to Salt Lake City.

Never been to the National. I'm more a National Narrow Gauge Convention fellow, been to a number of them. And it's been awhile for the NNGC, since I got involved in academia, because the date for the NNGC is almost always in conflict with class schedules. I snuck down to St. Louis for a few days in 2000, when I was in jr. college 3 degrees ago Was hoping to make KC in September, might still happen if I get the diss whipped into shape by then, but it may be just a little too far and too expensive when I'm basically broke (especially after this recent arrival...) Spent the narrowgauge budget already and have a six-pack of drop-bottom gons before year end, too, so unless the lottery helps me out, I'm stuck here. Might host a few visits bey folks I know on the way to the NNGC, though and meet a few faces to put with the personalities. There is a fellow in our division who goes to the National just about every year, so we get a report from him. Indianapolis is coming up in a couple of years, so I'm aiming for that to be my first National. Layout will be open for that, plus ops, so will be very busy with the National for once. Everybody have fun in Cleveland. Watch out for that Lefty guy, though, as that's where he ran to after ratting Pancho out to the federales...avoid cheap hotels and you should be fine.

Well I am still in the planning stages of attending the show. Long story short I am not going to be attending the show with the M&P club but rather with my Prince Adarius. I just have to decide what day to leave if I still go and plan for the 9 1/2 hour drive. I have done it before so I am not worried about it too much. As it stands I am planning to leave on Thursday morning or Friday morning and get to a hotel (Unless there someone that would love to host me and Adarius for three days?) LOL Seriously though, we will get a hotel, settle in and attend the show for the two days then leave Sunday afternoon OR Monday morning then go back to work for Tuesday day shift. Sounds like so much work for a "Fun weekend" in my opinion. Plus it means spending mad Benjamins for 5 days. I would estimate the trip to cost me $600 for hotel and food all weekend, $200 on gas and $200-500 at the show on shtuff I do not even need. So a minimum of $1000 and upwards to $1300.
well with all that said, time for me to do a Hotel/motel price and availability search now. I am such a PROCRASTINATOR when it comes to planning ANYTHING!! Money is certainly not the issue it is the logistics of the trip. I need a Monster Assistant for real. I would LOVE to have been good on doing things like this so I could have planned to attend with a few people around the states that i know in person and on Youtube then go as a huge gang!! That would be so much fun! 7-10 Young men that would have a blast at the show and more fun at the nights in Cleveland OH. Any guys making the drive from Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts? Although I should have tried to make those arrangements weeks ago! ALPROCRASTINATORMAYO

ALPROCRASTINATORMAYO Well I'm driving about 12 hours to get there but I'm also visiting several spots in the Northeast as part of the trip that week. Visiting D.C., NY, NJ, PA, Virginia and West Virginia. You will not catch me spending much at the show though because the entire 4,000 mile northeast trip with hotel, gas and food is going to be pricey. So I will be broke at the show, especially considering all the money flowing out for the new house coming up. I may be working under a bridge with a "Will work for trains" cardboard sign pretty soon. See you all there hopefully! Just look for the tall, bald, brown guy.

Are you only staying the one day? Right now I'm not sure because I have to get this report at work done before I go. If I get it done early, I'll probably be visiting Friday from Noon when it opens until 3pm in the afternoon. If I get it done just on time, I won't be there until Saturday morning and I'll stay until about 2 or 3pm. Then it's off to horse shoe curve and all stops in all the other states listed. My plan now is to stay at the DoubleTree by Downtown Cleveland because I have points to use from other trips. But I haven't booked yet because of this STUPID report. I'm bringing my cousin to do some camera man work since I got some new heavier camera gear to help make things less shaky. Wife has to work and one of the kiddos doesn't do so well on long road trips. -James

James et al, You may want to plan on going on the day that allows you more than the 3 hours bc I can tell you that after attending the ATL show last year, you blink and 3 hours are gone and you've only gotten to 1/4 of the building. Throw in your family, shaking hands with all the folks you (James and Al in particular) know on YouTube, and blam! there goes 6 hours.
I can't make this show and probably not the next couple as they are far from me. I may try to go up to Amherst in January and experience that one, Hope you all have fun. I'll be watching the internet for press releases, reports, and show reviews.

For the show, the City of Cleveland may be either partying in the streets or not too happy. If LeBron elects in the next few days to come back to Cleveland, they residents will be dancing in the streets. If he goes elsewhere or stays in Miami, the mood of the residents in Cleveland may be a little angry. Keep it tuned.....

It's a working trip for me. I get to go every year as part of the volunteer NTS crew that sets and runs the show. I'll get to do a couple of meetings on Monday then we get some time at the convention to see and do stuff. Starting Wednesday we are on the show floor and other than to sleep and eat(and sometimes not even that) I'll be there through Sunday night when the last person leaves.. It's a lot of work, and mostly , a lot of fun. I think it may be one of the best volunteer gigs in the NMRA even with the hassles we sometimes get. Hoping for cool weather for my outside colleagues and safe travels for all who arrive there. Looking forward to some new product, shopping for some things for the new basement/layout and seeing lots of old friends.
Sometimes we are in a fog, but I'll say hi to anyone I run into, so introduce yourselves if I don't. It's always good to place a name with a face from the board.

There will be lots of clinics and great things to do all week at the convention. Seems to be lost on most here.
That said I'm not able to attend, was lucky enough to live midway between Detroit and Grand Rapids in MI and was able to attend both when they were going on. Was a tour layout for the GR show.
Mike how much were those nekkid folks, anyway?

Actually I would prefer not to go to downtown Cleveland since the red light and speed camera's have proliferated like weeds in my flower beds! All those who attend be careful, do not exceed any posted or keep it under 25 if you are not sure (of course most cameras are where the speed limit goes from 35 to 25), and always stop behind the white line or you will get a ticket mailed to you!!!!! SNIP Mike how much were those nekkid folks, anyway? That's the way those kids dress these days. They paddle and float on the river, then need to have even fewer clothes on to relax catch some rays. Many who have ridden the 1:1 Silverton have encountered far more skin. They might barely qualify for PG13, YMMV, however that is a little hard to see in HO...hey, quite squinting! I've heard through the grapevine there is a certain bar called Maguires in Red Mountain that can slake your thirst for such things. Word is they have painted ladies...or maybe it's paintings of ladies? In any case, the reports are enthusiastic about the beer list and menu is all I know. Drop me a PM if you want directions there.

The perception that the NMRA is a tough crowd is a misperception. I have been to six national conventions in the past 14 years and I had a wonderful time at each. I met a lot of great people, learned a lot, saw and operated on many wonderful layouts. I would encourage anyone who can to go. Like I said in my earlier post, the regional convention in Utah was a blast. I spent about half an hour talking to the NMRA president. He is a great guy with a lot of interesting things to say.

Jim, Absolutely, positively just kidding about the NMRA being a tough crowd. In any case, I sure it's nowhere near the blast we have at narrowgauge conventions...at least until they took those 1/87 sticks of dino-mite away from some of us They did kinda sting, though, but that one guy was just having fun and shoulda gotten 1/87th of that 20 year sentence ...Pretty sure no SWAT teams, federal task forces, or mobilized National Guard riot control units will be involved in Cleveland. I was actually kidding Rick more about going to New Jersey as a "move of desperation," but I'll leave kidding New Jersey to the Saturday Night Live crew before anyone gets their feelings hurt.

Thanks for the heads up on the cameras. I had no idea. I would have been upset to get a ticket or five. Even though I never plan on returning to Cleveland for anything so I might just decide to stiff them on that bill since those cameras are nothing but glorified entrapment.

Rick J While so far I haven't had any run in's with speed cameras, I think they are just revenue generators. They are bad because you don't know you were naughty until days later rather than getting pulled over, you know the moment you are ticketed you need to slow up or whatever. Maryland has lots of speed camera's ... thank goodness I don't live there. Jim

The Ohio Supreme Court has determined that these are not violations that would give you points or a violation, so they are just a civil citation and there is no way to come after you except through a collection agency. Also in two cases brought in Toledo and Cleveland, they found that the appeals process is unconstitutional as it is not before a judge and those cases are now before the court. In addition the legislature has a law in process that states a police officer must be present to give the citation which will in effect get rid of the cameras. Rick J
