I'm still not a fan of the swoosh. The subtle switch to black from green made a big impact on me. I also enjoyed the cigar band on the nose that Heritage-2 had. Heritage-I was cool, too. I'd also echo the sentiments about the original BN scheme being the best, but i did like the white face on the SD60Ms and still enjoy the cream 'n green SD70MACs whenever I see one. This thread reminded me of two GP50s I saw in Kansas City earlier this year. Those engines are still in that paint in early 2014? If so, "Wow!"

For anyone modeling that detail, the RV air conditioners on #3159 are Coleman Mach 3 air conditioners. The air conditioners on the Atlas Gensets are Carrier Air V units. Carrier has exited the RV air conditioner business, so any new installs will have to have another brand, at least on the prototype.

isn't the EMD thing an A-A-1,or 1-A-A ? think the traction motor set up is different than the C4s ? but maybe EMD isn't settled yet on what they will be ? 2 good looking 50s there !! Spikre IIRC it's like many of the Lionel engines where the dummy axles are next to the fuel tank. Chris Z.

Speaking of paint schemes folks don't like..... in a similar vein I hate those "RV" style AC units. Give me the original style as seen on the Santa Fe engine in the photo. Bob

Cool shot! A Phase I Santa Fe and a Phase II BN with the "Extra Cab" extended length cab. Wonder if Athearn will get around to those? Athearn has stated they will NOT be doing BN 3158-3162 with the extended cab. Unique tooling would be required for the cab, cab interior, nose, entire walkway piece to accommodate the unique sub-base arrangement these units had with the battery box doors pushed forward, new battery box doors, front side handrails, possibly new frame to make detailed cab interior work, etc. For five oddball units, I can't see there being sufficient ROI to recoup the tooling costs.

I could tell you if I saw one. Since Carrier no longer makes them, the three major providers are Atwood, Dometic and Coleman. Atwood currently has less than 5% of the market, though they have some things going for them the others don't. I'll see if I can find and post some photos of them, if nothing else, y'all would know which one to try to find in order to get the details right.

I'm used to seeing quite a few mismatched air conditioner pairs on gensets. Whatever the newer ones are they are smaller than their predecessors, since there is a repaired/patched area in the roof where the old one used to be.
As far as the comment about standard SP/SF air conditioners being preferable to the RV style, I agree from a purely aesthetic point of view. They just look right to me since I'm used to seeing them in the 80s and 90s. But like so many other features I like on models I loathe them on the prototype. It's like sharing a small room with a jet engine. You can't hear anything but the a/c unit. When I end up with former SF units with those air conditioners, I usually just open the windows and doors and deal with the heat so I can hear the radio.

I know it would be impractical, since they would get broken almost immediately, but a single earpiece/ microphone combo that could plug into a jack in the radio should be better as far as being able to hear.

A lot of the former BN diesels have jacks for headphones, which is interesting since they aren't the ones with the air conditioner noise problem. The newer North American cab diesels are much quieter inside and the air conditioners themselves are also much quieter. But it's rare to do any switching with them.

In another 15 or so years, the new, quieter engines will probably be used as switch engines, though by that time they probably will be not nearly as quiet.

Mine arrived in very nice shape. The packaging is well done. And no assembly problems.
Good job on these I think!

Picked up my Blue MoPac units from my LHS...plus 2 undecorated models...of course...Very nice runners...Very nice on the assembly of the painted units...however, there seems to be an electrical problem when turning the lights on...with DCC installed...Probably two wires crossed on the circuit board...
Not a big deal, really...as I am replacing the circuit boards with Digitrax Decoder boards anyway...and LED's.
Thanks, ATHEARN!!!

Athearn Tiger Stripe GP50's for BN are available. Man that is one nice looking engine. Stock seems limited, which is normal for first release of GP50 paint jobs. I got mine, even tho I have brass already I bought the Creamcicle and 2 regular stripe.

I'm changing mine over to led lights since you can't even see them when they are on!! Very impressed with the motor control even for tsunami Since I havnt cracked mine open yet I wonder if it has the +14 on the board or will I have to use the positive lead off the motor leads?

Does yours have ditch lights?
If so how do you swap for leds?? Simple? Are these bulbs built in housing as bulbs? Or bulbs doped into a housing?
I know how I'm going to do front/rear headlights but I have front/rear ditch lights on this high hood and wondered
Thanks art
Btw if you are close to me (six flags) maybe I can check out your work and take notes lol
