ExactRail is at the Union Pacific Historical Society (UPHS) Annual Convention! Blaine Hadfield is the dinner speaker at the convention event, and he will discuss the development of recent ExactRail products. Furthermore, he will introduce an all-new freight car! Everyone is enjoying themselves I see! While there seems to be a crowd who likes to H8 on the UP, being a western modeler I still need a healthy mix of UP rolling stock. The most likely car is another variant of their recent two western coal hoppers. Very possible. But I would think the most likely would be a GSC flat with bulkheads. As Mike pointed out, Blaine is housebroken so there will probably be some tie-in there. I am definitely looking forward to some GSC flats with bulkheads, especially D&RGW since kit versions are kind a hard to find these days and I passed on the back when they were plentiful. Time will tell.

IMO, ExactRail makes the best HO product on the market and I would definitely have/buy more of it if money were no object. That's said, I do buy as much as I can manage and balance types of freight cars in my fleet. I only had two Walthers GSC flat car kits (still un-built) and picked up a couple more recently before ER announced theirs but got them cheap. I may or may not built a couple of those still depending on whether I am feeling frisky but if anything, if ER offers the bulkhead version, I'd get those from ER. I've seen too many of the Walthers GSC built with "wonky" bulkheads! Cheers, Jim

Rio Grande standard gauge definitely included a lot of UP freight cars on their bridge route, but I'm guessing by the 1970's 40' flat cars were pretty rare in general, so I'm going to wait and do more research but looks like a low priority freight car for me. If it is intermodal that was seen in the 50's and maybe up to the mid 60's, definitively too early for me.

Apparently a UP 40 ft Flat Car F-50-15. What ever that is. An early piggy back flat car. Way before modern era. The F-50-15 was a 42'6" car, 500 of which were built in UP's Denver shops in 1951. Only a relatively small number (my book from Morning Sun says 85 cars) were converted to piggyback service in 1964/65. These cars, as well as those in original configuration, lasted through the 1970s at least in revenue service and some stuck around for much longer as MOW cars.

Rob, thanks for the background info on those flat cars. It helps to have a context to know how they will fit in for the modeler. Sounds like WP and D&RGW can probably use a couple of them in the 70's.
