I picked up a RS1 in Rutland colors the atlas/kato model.
I like to keep it Rutland but wondered if the front/rear lights stayed the single big bulb it's whole duration as Rutland ?
Also I like to dress it up some so any added detail would be advised.
I will be adding sound later on so was this a 539t or 244??
Thanks art

There are many photos of the former RS-1s working for Vermont Rail with the single light, so that would suggest that they were original. They seem to have been converted to twin beam sometime in the 70s. Since I am not a Rutland modeler, I can't advise you on road specific details. The RS-1 was built with the 539T prime mover. I am not aware of the prime mover being upgraded in these units.

Sorry, I can't help you on the horns and the walkway over the radiator fan (I'm guessing you'll probably have to scratchbuild that). However, try this for the classification lights (I've used them all the time on RS3's):
Cal-Scale Marker Lamps
For the handbrake chain, I would look at the following:
Custom Finishing RS Handbrake Chain Guide
It isn't exactly correct as it is more like the ones used on the later RS and RSD locomotives.

the early S switchers and all RS-1s have a hood that was narrower than the later RS-2/3 type hoods. don't recall any of the earlier S/RS-1s being repowered with 244, or even 251 blocks. the 244 was only made in V-12 and V-16 blocks. the 251 did have the 6 Cylinder block used in S-5/6,and T-6 locos amoung others, but since those blocks likely cost more than the Original S/RS-1 locos doubt that any units got them. the 539/539T was a tuff engine, some still run today. That rutland railway is pretty sparse unless my phone doesn't allow or bring up anymore of his rs3/1 builds??
On that walkway I wonder if an antenna stand with the center cut out using some kind of etch mesh sheet like Plano would work??

Well I'm making progress but I'm thinking about freelancing this build.. The original Rutland #402 is in Michigan somewhere I think in red/white with short hood cut up and out of service.. So I'm kinda mixing a little #405 in this but only add on detail like fogs class light and such Now the bell on the long hood on the current #405 is something I like to add Any clue what style is that and is it available for purchase? I'm just gonna link my photobucket and let you scroll through i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af158/countrygurl78/IMG_2112.jpg

Appears out of six units four still exist -
400 is now A&M 20 401 is/was Consumers Power 401 in Michigan (stored OOS by the looks of it) 402 is reported on the Coopersville & Marne in Michigan with chopped short hood 405 remains on Vermont Railway
403 was apparently scrapped by Sabine River & Nothern in the early 1970s; 404 bounced around northern New York before beng reported at Naporano's scrap yard in 1989.

As mentioned, 402 eventually became Tuscola & Saginaw Bay #2394 and was later purchased by a gentleman who now stores it on the Coopersville & Marne in Michigan. It came to the C&M on traction motor-less shop trucks. An attempt was made to get it running about 15 years ago but unfortunately its crank case exploded in the process. Very unlikely it will ever run again. I took this picture a few years ago when we were moving equipment around in Coopersville.

Grabemm, look for an article in Trains,"The Tennesse is Tuff",think it ran around 1980 or so. too bad after Southern bought them the RS-1s were sold off or scrapped. for more Door Flapping RS-1 fun, check out some of the Susie Q books on the trains that ran to the Water Gap to deliver/pick up cars from L&NE. 4 or 5 unit sets would have a number of doors open to keep the 539Ts running cool. the Abandenment of the L&NE and the arrival of the GP18s put an end to the 4 or 5 unit RS-1 lash ups by 1963. but plenty of earlier pics survive. Thanks for the info if I can find them I will look them up..
I got a MLW and a Spokane in up colors that I'm debating on doing this to but they are too nice to "butcher" up.
I might try an AHM or bachmann to see if I'm worthy of such a project.
Then again I don't have to be rs1 specific.and do have a Peabody rs3 I'm sure my grandpa would to cut up lol
