These cars were just announced on Athearn’s site. Does anyone know if they are from new tooling or just reworked older models?
No mention of separately applied grab irons has me a little concerned considering the $25.98 list price.
50 outside braced boxcar
Thanks, Mark

It kind of looks like their old Blue Box 50' semi-Pennsy/LV 50' plug door, with a price point to support that it is an assembled Blue Box. An all-new boxcar would no doubt be $40+.
I wish Athearn would do some more freight cars, and a replacement of the 50' plug door into what it is supposed to be would be a good choice.

For a car that will be about 18$ on the street, I can live with the stand in. Theres alot of good roads for the Northeast modeler in that lot. Not everyone can afford 40$ a car for everything.

I still have one each of the Athearn PRR (freight car red) and LV (white sides, all else black) cars that I bought back in the 1960's or 1970's. The sides are reasonable representations of the full-size cars; the ends aren't, being based on a considerably earlier style; I don't know about the roofs. So the sides that are to be painted for LV (green) and PC (same color) are also a reasonable match.
The sides of the model aren't nearly as close a match for the Reading cars Athearn plans to paint them for or the D&H cars (repainted ex-Reading ones), which had two fewer "ribs" or outside posts on each side and straight side sills. Again, the ends don't match, and I don't know about the roofs. I also don't know how closely the coming Santa Fe model matches any prototype.
It's possible that I may nevertheless spring for one of the Reading models, because the drawing on Athearn's .pdf page shows they're lettered to be returned when empty to Lititz, PA, where my late mother taught for a year or two before marrying my late father, and which is the site of the oldest pretzel factory still in operation in the U.S. John Sutter lived in Litiz after leaving California, and I've watched trout swimming in artificial channels in the town's park.

Those are some gorgeous paint schemes. I wish they were done on cutting edge cars.

This is old Blue Box car dusted off. Yup and that Santa Fe car has the same paint scheme as the kit..I think the same applies to the LV car as a Bev-Bel/Athearn?

Yes this is the old Athearn standard ribside boxcar which means that it is incorrect for every paint scheme shown on the model!
It is pretty close to the PRR/PC/CR/LV X58 boxcar except for the underframe, ends, sides, and roof!

Thanks guys! I had my suspicions that these weren’t correct simply based on Athearn’s habit of “retreading old tires” when it comes to “new” car releases. (Sighing, due to my disappointment ) So, it looks like I’ll pass on these. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Exactrail or Tangent will offer the correct cars some day.
But there is no way I'll spend even $18 for an incorrect, factory assembled Blue Box toy.
Thanks, Mark

Just a guess, Athearn tooled up only new sides for these cars and used existing tooling (copied?) for the roof/ends. And the frame is the same as any other Athearn 50' car, they're interchangable.
The green LV car was offered in several numbers as a Rail Runner custom paint, back when that was still a thing. Accurail even offered their 50' OB car in that scheme. And at least one or two lasted right to the end of Conrail in LV paint, I caught one in Syracuse, NY still lettered LV about 1997 and ended up chasing it across town to get pictures of both sides. One sat in a scrapyard in Elmira, NY, too for ages before being repaired and returned to service.

There seems to be a growing collector group for custom painted cars from several companies like Bev-Bel,Robin Rails,Rail Runner and other like companies.
Could be a passing fad but in this hobby who can say?

The Moloco cars are great, just looking for someone local to place a combined order with so we can split the shipping.

On the X-58 side of it, does anyone have an insight as to who is producing one? Seems like there could be a fair number of variations.

Rail Yard models used to make a Resin Kit of the X58 (no dashes on PRR Class Numbers) it was the state of the art kit for this car. Unfortunately Gene Fusco has stopped production of all kits and they go for north of $120.00 on E-bay on the few times I have seen them. Rick J

Wish another company would release the X58 boxcar! Bowser did a good job on the PRR H30 so maybe we can hope for a Bowser X58. Anyhow I was luck enough to get a couple of X58s when RYM was in business. Great cars which were engineered very well so assembling the was actually a lot of fun. A PRR X58: A PC X58

Beautifully done! I'm more than just a bit jealous, those RYM kits really go together nicely, the end result is well worth the effort too. Thanks for sharing the pics, I have to wonder what's become of all the molds for these kits.

I have heard rumors that a manufacturer is planning to do the X 58. Another manufacturer who was planning to do the car told me they decided not to do it when they heard the news. I've been trying to convince them to do a G-43 gon. ---- Ken

Rick Hey, at least you guys were smart enough to order some kits and not procrastinate like I did. I kept putting off buying because I “assumed” the company would be around and there were always other things to buy instead of RYM kits. Now, I’m stuck watching kits sell on eBay for ridiculous money when I could have bought them for $40 plus shipping. RYM X58 that just sold for ridiculous money!Someone please buy the tooling and start making these kits again so I can stop whining like a baby about not have any. Mark PS: Great modeling work as always Tom!
