I finished two more camp cars to add to the work train. The steps were cut from sections of Grandt Line stairway material. The National Belle mine in Red Mountain got a new coal shed as part of a bigger project to improve service of this vital commodity. I pulled the 5 trains on the Chama staging loop to check them out before an upcoming staging session, filling the Durango yard, then returned them to stating.

It looks like a nice place. Closer shots of the work equipment would be nice 'filler'.

It looks like a nice place. Closer shots of the work equipment would be nice 'filler'. No problem. I'll copy from my posting adding more details at the MR forum... On 0108, I wish I'd done a bit more sanding. It's still a little "fuzzy" in hi-rez. It's an outfit car, so basically a rolling office/break room/warm place, very useful on a mountain railroad. It's based on a 10-ton boxcar the Silverton Northern had on the roster, a Rio Grande-hand-me-down via the Silverton RR. I presumed it survived into the 1960s by being in MOW service. The laser cut kit was by Master Creations. Silverton Union RR 0112 is a Tool Car. It was modified from HOn3 Railway Engineering Carter Bros ventilated boxcar kit, which helpfully has end doors in both ends, making it ideal for this transformation. This side has the walk-in door, but the other retains its sliding door for loading large items. Windows from the scarp box. I also added modern safety appliances and rebuilt the underframe so the coupler was part of it, rather than slung underneath. The trucks are brass takeoffs from brass cabooses upgraded to Blackstone trucks. Camp Car SURR 0123 is another Carter Bros/Railway Engineering model. It provides sleeping facilities, a small kitchen, and -- best of all at the end of a hard day -- a solar heated shower. particulars as with 0112, except walk-in doors on both side. I'm assuming the Carter Bros cars were bought used from a California NG line, but no evidence of them actually being in Silverton...but who's keeping score? Carter Bros trucks by Rio Grande Models were supplied with both kits, replaced by the cushy ex-caboose trucks. I plan to use the RGM trucks for a future logging project.

Here are some cars that I managed to finish this week despite getting ready for the bowling season that starts next week. I showed some in progress pictures a while ago on this car, but I procrastinated with the masking of the paint colors, but finally got around to finishing the car this week. It is a Pfaulder Milk Car, IMRC kit, painted with Scalecoat II Black and Floquil Pullman Green paint then lettered with Highball Graphics decals. Can't see all the work that went into the underbody decals, but I really like the car and have another to build. IMRC 40' PS1 Boxcar Kit w/7' YSD to match the prototype car. The Buffalo Creek Railroad was an industrial road in Buffalo, NY serving a large flour mill. All the cars were lined and sprayed to keep out weevils, they had a few hundred of their own cars that could be found on all the railroads serving Buffalo. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and then lettered with Dan's Resin Casting Decals. Branchlne 40' 1944 AAR Boxcar Kit with Panel Roof and 8' YSD. Car in general services but equipped with a DF Loader for specialized service. Painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Herald King Decals. Rick J

Here's an Atlas/Branchline 50'RBL that I've finished. The prototype is 1 of 100 built in May of '57 by General American for commodities that required some protection from temperatures. This car's lettering arrangement is unusual in that the entire name is spelled out, many, if not all were eventually repainted solid orange with the larger, modern lettering. The Atlas model is a very nice representation of the Rio Grande car, it's quite vibrant right out of the box, so I had a bit of fun toning it down using some very thinned TCP earth colors followed by chalks and some dry brush silver to pick it out a little.... The model and a prototype photo from my days at Hundman Publishing. Finished up and out in the sun, I painted the underframe black and the weathered it as well. Here's a roof shot, note the dark green "No Damage" flag. I think it's a real nice car at a reasonable price, and a great addition to my home road car fleet.

Well, it's painted and in about a week it'll be decal time. Here's the last photo without paint. Thanks, Bobby

Great pics, Dave. I was digging around in my pics and found one of the Railway Engineering Carter Bros ventilated boxcar kits I built basically stock. I did move the coupler up so it was part of the endbeam, but other than that mostly unchanged. The barred door is all the refrigeration needed on many nights in the San Juans.

Great Pics as usual Guys !! Rick, Buffalo Creek was owned 50/50 by EL and LV,not sure which EL predecesser had the stake before the merger, anyone know ? T-Bird, Branchline totally hosed the GATC underframe,it should be a late Duryea Cushioned type. there was a good article and pics in an RP CYC on the cars and a corrected underframed model. Mike, just add a banjo player to complete the Camp cars !! Spikre

I had started to install plano detail parts for walthers funnel flow tank cars. I did the etched walkway's at the end of each car, but dont think i did it right. It said to remove the factory molded portion, I took that as, grind it off and remove it......completely! lol ooooops. Left the ends very unstable and weak. I've since removed the etching and replace the end pieces with ones from another kit I had. Pics for viewing pleasure. Here is the brass walkway supports and uprights. I really don't know how I am going bend the handrails once i route it through the small holes. I've thought about using the factory walthers prebent ones, but not sure of its diameter. And these bowswer 2bay 70t covered hoppers are going to be converted into open top ballast hoppers for a construction firm here in new jersey. I have most of everything i'll need. However, this bowswer paint does not want to come off. I used castrol super clean on the main body and was only able to get the paint off using a toothpick and q-tip and some scrubbing, this was after 3 or 4 days. I used 91% alcohol next and several days later, samething, no paint coming off. trying to get as much done so i can get it all primered at once.

Steve I am working on 3 LPG tanks from walthers and I did my crossovers by removing the molded grate only and maintaining the frame work. Hope this is helpful.

I mistook the instructions as "remove the molded on piece" as in, take it all off....all of it! lol Thankfully i had other kits that i could "borrow" the truck frame stuff from since those kits had other missing pieces. Plus there is a guy on a fb group that does casting and is going to try and cast me 3 pairs of these so i can eventually finish the other tank cars.
