well I finally got it together last night. I filmed, converted, edited and uploaded my first video in months after I lost all that video footage I shot in Cleveland at the National Train show in July. I came home, converted the video files and then the hard drive crashed!! I lost EVERYTHING! I thought I saved it with a program but I did not. I just took the hard drive to Best Buys Geek Squad today and paid $154 to see if they can "recover" the video files but I do not have my hopes up too high again! Anyway I went to my buddy Larry's house (The millionaire with a basement that is literally bigger than my whole house!). I brought my camera and a Bachmann SD70ACe to do a review of it that i bought three months ago and meant to do back in July!! Well it is done now! Do not get all bent out of shape because of the ending either. I do model reviews with honesty and to show that I thought the model was not good I got extreme. I choose to make my videos to be edgy and entertaining like the Dave Chappelle Show! LOL. Anyways, it has a great ending! Remember that model railroading is not a necessity but rather a hobby. We NEED food but we do NOT need Model trains. Well with all that said, be prepared to be shocked and entertained!! P.S. It feels real nice to finally be back even a little bit!! STAND BY FOR: A Layout update from Larry's Layout and soon after, My layout!

OUCH!
FRA will have to come up with a new check-off box on the accident form for that one...
Good to hear the sound was decent for the $$$. I've been arguing Bachmann's nibbling away at the traditional $100 difference in MSRP for sound-equipped locos will eventually drive that difference down to ~$40, then eventually will just get rolled into the cost of the engine like they're pretty much done with putting DCC in everything except their low end stuff.
Now if they can just get the rest of the locomotive down...

Al you never said what happened to the memory card in the video camera?
Was there some music playing on your video? I hear noises are they from the engine?
At least it has a fly wheel.

Reminds me of what I did with one on my Atlas8-40c's from the latest run. Its in pieces in a box.

Al you never said what happened to the memory card in the video camera? Was there some music playing on your video? I hear noises are they from the engine? At least it has a fly wheel. hey atsfan - I do not have a video camera with ONLY the SD card slots, it has internal HDD. All the NEW HD cameras have moved from nice large 80-160gb internal hard drives to ONLY SD card ones or small 20-30gb HDD and two SD Slots. This camera is about 4-5 years old now and it has a nice 80gb internal hard drive in it. So I record right to the internal hard drive and not an SD card. (I also have a slot for an extra SD card but I do not use it) When I was done with Cleveland show I plugged in my camera to my laptop and CUT & PASTED the videos from the camera to my laptop hard drive. When that was done I unplugged the video camera and put it away. After converting the file from MOD to WMV HD in my laptop the harddrive literally FAILED and went dead. I tried many things to get off the data from the hard drive and even the video camera but no avail. My last attempt today was I brought the old hard drive that I had sitting in a draw for 3 months to Best buy Geek squad to give them a shot. They say they can recover my data from the drive (I doubt it) but I paid them $154 and let them have it. They said 3-5 days and I will have my videos and pictures transferred on to the external hard drive I got with the $150 deal. WE'LL SEE! as for the sound in the engine, it made some whiny noises but nothing too loud. Could have been the background song, "So Ghetto" by Jay-Z.

The EMD SD70ACE should have been cut into smaller pieces to make it unrecognizable.

Even if its a Bachmann, what a waste. Must be nice to have money to throw away like that.

Even if its a Bachmann, what a waste. Must be nice to have money to throw away like that. Here near the Big U, that's called art. And I think Big Al made a pretty profound statement there. [If it was me, I would've been sure and cut it so I could salvage the decoder. But I'll admit I'm cheap, even when it comes to my art ]

I think I might try putting a "cherry bomb" inside a locomotive model and lighting it to see what happens. I may have some EMD around that needs to be toasted. I just got rid of some MTH stuff. Seemed like likely candidates for this.

Al, I gave up halfway through because I couldn't hear you over the other sounds. Maybe a separate mike, or even a voiceover? ? Ed

...you can hear what I am saying WHEN I TALK. No. I can't. That's why I posted. Maybe everyone else can hear. I don't know. I'm surprised that YOU do know. But, that's OK. I just won't watch any more of your productions. Ed

See if you can record dual to both the hard drive and an SD card also at the same time. If not use just the SD card. They are cheap so you never have to erase the video.

Ed, Actually, I could hear Al just fine. Al, Just for a fair comparison when you lined up the MTH/Bachmann/Overland locos together, it would have been interesting to have small signs (just handwritten ones) showing the MSRP of each one. While we both know the Bachmann & MTH & Overland are what they are, not every person watching knows that. And the chop saw? Classic Al Mayo. Um, can we expect a weathered scrap load coming soon?

Instead of destroying a new model, no matter how bad it is, it should have been offered to some disabled kid or somene in the hobby who can not get one himself

I agree, that was a stupid and immature thing to do. It must be nice getting free locomotives. I don't know anyone that would throw out $130. A better idea would be to donate/give it away in a raffle, or just sell it.
PS. The crazy thing is my Bachmann F-7 runs better than my Athearn SD40-2.

Please explain that one to us because I made it clear that I PAID $135 for that engine in the video. So maybe you know something I do not know. I surely could have given it away for FREE and if I gave it to you for FREE you could have said, "It is Nice getting free locomotives". Then your statement would have meaning. Otherwise I did not get it for free so explain that to me how it is nice getting free locomotives.

Last I checked, folks, it's a free country. If Al wants to spend $135 for something only to destroy it, he's got every right. It obviously gave him enjoyment to do so, and if that experience was worth $135, then so be it. Some folks spend that just going out for a night of fun. And who knows? Maybe he'll turn it into a wreck scene on his layout or a scrap load for his gondolas. Sheesh.

Well, his to do with what he wants to, his time to show off doing what he wants to, up to the rest of us to formulate an opinion based on those actions; our right to have a poor opinion as a result.
Plenty of people in the hobby who are perfectly satisfied with this "junk" or don't have the budget for the more accurate stuff; if I had a case load of 1978 AHM GP18s factory decorated Lehigh Valley, I could sell them for $25 at least one a show every show I do. And I think those are crap - but when I was 12 I was happy with one. The last couple I sold went to adults -

Those are bicentennial units; I've sold a few of those, boxed, originals, too.
In fact what I often do is buy the junkers and broken ones until I have all the parts for a complete drive, then when I run across a MIB dummy unit - not hard because they were so light they wouldn't stay on the track and didn't get run much - I just convert it to a powered. One of the LV units I just sold was a dummy when I got it.
It's gotten to where I can convert one over in about 10 minutes, and I've done a couple without even needing to resolder anything, although you have to take the brush caps off the motor to do that.

If you buy a thing, you have the right to with it as you wish and I imagine if you collect brass it's quite a let-down.
I would have given it to someone, however, but that's me.
I wonder, would the shell at least have been worthy of a few detail parts?
I'd like to see what someone could do with one as a "cost-effective" experiment of sorts.

Big Al
How long can that blade last??? Your video will probably not be used in an ad for Bachmann, but that could be the good news of the story.

The shell has molded on hand grabs. The least they could do would be leave those off completely and maybe have the dimples where a person could drill holes and install grab irons. They did the same type of molded on rear handrails to the tender of the their EM1 steamer and left off a lot of detail and added some that was not correct. It does not make sense to add detail molded on. People who do not know anything about trains would not miss them and the ones who might want to detail them would have to sand them off and repaint the shell. For me, the shell would be worthless.
