Jim, i wish I had half your talent in doing locomotive kit bashes and upgrades. I barely manage to muddle along with adding detail parts to stock locomotives. Last week our club had its open house to coicide with the Strongsville Historical Society's Christmas festival. Also, we had our Christmas Party so not much modeling got done last week. But I did take a few pictures! First off is the car I built for the Christmas gift exchange. We have a drawing and gifts are then taken from the previous person if they don't want to open the brown bag with the unknown gift. My car got traded numerous times before the end of gift exchange. This years car was in IMWX 1937 AAR 10' IH Boxcar. Painted the car with Floquil Jade Green and lettered the car with Champ Decals. Car is from the second lot of these cars the P&LE acquired. Now for a few shots of my Stewart C628 & C630 that I added the CalScale details for and decaled with data and numbers from various Microscale sets. They were hauling 36 of the Stewart G39 and G39A Ore Jennies replicating the trains coming off of Whiskey Island in Cleveland. Pictures were taken on the Stongsville Society of Model Railroad Engineers club layout of which I am a member. Thanks for Lookin! Rick J

Love the P&LE jade green box. Still like NYC's jade green scheme. Saw a real NYC jade green boxcar when I was a little kid at a lumberyard in Belleville, Illinois. This would have been about 1964 or so. I was already hooked on trains, had been since I got my Lionel set for Christmas at age 2! I still remember trying to push the boxcar. At that point dad said "you can't move it and lets go".
I was a "different" child.

Jim, That SD rocks I too was a fan of that jade green. It really stuck out in trains as they rolled by. Rick, Awesome ore train! Since Jim is a commuter railfan, here's a pic of what I have for commuter trains, which isn't much, but saves walking The quarry at the end of the Cascade Branch is up near the tree line. Keeping in mind the issues that raises, many workers at the quarry live in Purgatory, where the stone mill is located for the same reasons. The daily quarry to mill run also handles a combine to take workers up to Crater Lake along with the MT quarry-to-mill service stone flats. It often has a car or two to bring up for the homeward evening commute run. I picked up the combine years ago from the consignment case at Caboose Hobbies. No idea who made it from a LaBelle kit. Speaking of flats in Q2M service, I finished the last two that I had parts for. The 4 steel cars allowed reassignment of 6 wood 30' flats to less rigorous service. The steel flats are lettered from my Silverton Union RR, as developing the Cascade Branch was a joint effort between the Rio Grande and the predecessors of the SURR, since Otto Mears was a partner in Crater Lake Stone. SURR crews most of the trains, including the daily Mountaineer, which runs from Red Mountain to Crater Lake and back, as well as contributes rolling stock and some motive power. The flats are built from MDC 30' flat kits. I cut the diecast under-frame/weight to narrow it along with cutting the plastic carbody down to ~8' width. They are rather heavy for such a small car, so two and a caboose or combine is right at the limit of what a C-19 can handle.

Great look stuff this week guys, killer SD40-2 Jim! Love the club ore train shots and the CSX SD too, Scotty that's a great looking upgrade to that MDC kit, I've long avoided it, may have to pick one up seeing how nice it's coming out. It was new GP40-2 week at my house....Let's just say "Classic example of being very happy I pre ordered!" These are all perfect right from the box, they don't need any parts, just some weathering. Great attention to detail with phase variations (nose length, angled blower, fans, etc) and lettering, note how the sight glass is in different positions in "Rio". I missed the Atlas release of this, now with no regrets, this a far better model.

Jim, Are you kidding us. Your modeling skills and taste in music is fantastic. Add a little Abby Road and it will be perfect. I've been wanting to add tread plate to a few of my dash 2s, but on the models I own the walkway is the same color as the body. And I never can match the factory color spot on. JL Vancouver WA

This is the smallest of the rail whales, the multi-axle tank cars. Phosphorus is a very heavy element, thus the small size of the car. The car is scratch built.

ICE 6416, the Intermountain SD40-2, I replaced the cut levers, relocated the horn, filled in the gap behind the cab, and added several other things. I took this to gauge where I'm at on the weathering, I've got a few spots I'm going to work on... NOKL 823998, this was a custom painted Intermountain 4750 I bought on ebay years ago, I think this was a Oddballs decal set, the lettering is too narrow compared to the prototype, like the decals were made to fit the Athearn 4740 or something, so it's not "exact" I finally got around to weathering it and patching it for NOKL, it's at least somewhat believable. I'm waiting on a new ladder since I can't find the bottom stirrup from that one that's broken. UNPX 126104, Intermountain Procor PD hopper, ex Halliburton, now used for hauling fly ash. I finished this one up a couple months ago but don't think I've posted it yet Brad

Did you build 1700?

Sweet pic, Dan. I love it! Did you build 1700? Yes, I did that about 10 years ago. Styrene shell, brass tubing frame, proto 2000 trucks, an A-line Helix Humper motor with Proto 2000 flywheels turned down to fit inside the shell and Stewart C628 drive shafts. Also features LED headlights and Digitrax DCC decoder. I am considering adding a sound unit to this one. It is currently in the shop getting the grills "fixed" as I never really liked the way the originals came out. I am considering learning how to Photo etch so I can make some brass grills for it. Here are a couple of pictures from the build

Dan, nice to see the build photos of the WAG unit. Former Ford Motor Co factory switcher, right? I remember when you were building it and posting progress on the original Atlas forum.

Dan, Thanks for sharing! Must've been the pics that Karl mentioned that I vaguely remember. That's fine work on a very distinctive prototype.

Thanks. I got the idea on how to do those from finding your article on doing a blue/white CRDX 4750 in an old Mainline Modeler at the hobby shop

Thanks, The whole project started out as something of a "dare" from a former co-worker who had a strange affliction to G scale. He was intending on building one but never got too far with it. Life problems got in the way. Anyway, he did not think it could be pulled off in HO,

So these IM SD40-2's have actual potential, NOICE! Got a lot done on my Athearn SD70M-2 that will be painted into my freelanced CNJ Put the cab interior together. The detail on the control stand and desk top is pretty amazing. Windshield section glued in. Numberboards, headlights and roof put on. I know the athearn part is a bit pricey, but i may order one for this model since it will need to be painted anyway. Roof is not glued in, just resting in place. Im probably going to glue the roof and not use the magnets. Now here is a part i messed up on. I didn't look at the instruction or parts diagrams for the tank. I thought the other fuel fillers went in the other holes that I hadn't used the previous day i worked on this. I didn't realize fuel guage was supposed to go in. Getting there Air tanks, filters and other underframe crap, also glued in the side sills or whatever they are called. Will finish the traction motor cables wednesday hopefully. Front end Rear Nearing completion. Now im torn not sure if I want to install the CN etched walkways that are supposed to be raised off the plastic ones. The prototype isn't like this, the walkways are see through. Im guessing so snow doesn't build up as easy.

Oh and as my luck would have it. I am missing 1 stinking brake cylinder. I dont know if I even have a spare one from other things lying around or if they would even look or fit right. Im missing the long hood end bell bracket and the salem air filters. So I hope to try and get a set of DW filters to work and a DW or DA bell as I hate the athearn e-bell casting, looks wayyyyyyy to small.
Does anyone know if the TSU-GN1000 EMD 710 G3C-T2 sound decoder for the m-2/ace has the pneumatic bell as an option. I thought when I programed my up heritage ace's that it only had e-bell as an option in jmri. Its been a few years i can't remember.

Steve, I priced out the Athearn and MTH cabs for a couple SD40-3 projects I have going. The complete Athearn cab (at the time I priced them) was $21.00 plus ship for the complete cab. The MTH was $35.00 and if I understood her correctly was just the cab with no details.I plan to buy the Athearn cabs next spring as I am still waiting for other parts to show up.

Yea I had bought a new athearn cab 2 years ago when my just finished painted sd70ace hit the floor from 4 feet up on a shelf. Split the cab open and knocked all minor detai parts all over. I was acutally able to save the cab since it split on the glued seems. The cab I got was completely unassembled just like in the pic from last weeks photo fun. NO details what so ever. You need to buy everything seperate, windows are seperate, etched metal pieces seperate. If you bought everyhting needed to build one, it wuold probably cost you twice as much as a finsihed model.

Jim,
I know you'll really like them! Even the 2 early versions have some differences between them - the two latter ones are so different from all the others in detail I'd be really surprised if the get done again anytime soon, congrats!

Steve, the price Athearn quoted me was for a complete cab assembly. But this was early this tear prices may have changed since then.
