I'm looking at a couple of P2K GP9's that are sound equipped and in good operating condition but have broken stanchions and handrails. Walthers attitude is that once the model is yours and you experience broken parts, then it's your problem, sucker!!
There's no sense in getting these if I can't fix them, any ideas of where I can obtain replacements for these handrails?

Are you specifically looking for replacement Proto 2000 handrails, or are you willing to build your own? EMD switch to their standard stamped stanchions for the GP9. AFAIK, you should be able to use any of the available stanchions to make your own handrails.

John, EMD switched to the Channel Stantions about 6/54,so there are a few GP9 orders with GP7 Stantions. some U.P. GP9Bs had GP7 Stations also. later some rebuilt GP7s got the later Channel stations. Spikre

When I made my PC GP-9b I used Precision Scale stanchions #3936 and Tichy .015 brass wire. The stanchions are plastic, open on the back and the wire sits inside. Once installed the wire fill in the back and looks good. Bending the wire is easy using existing Proto handrails as a guide.

It is not that difficult at all. Simply take another unit & match the bend lines. Use .020 Brass wire for railings.

It may be helpful to find photos of the prototype you are trying to match. The first few L&N GP9's also had the GP7-style stanchions.
Another option if you can find them are the Smokey Valley handrail kits. I used a set on a P2K GP9 kitbash that held up well.

If only the handrail is broken and not the stanchions, you can drill out the stanchion and bend your own wire. I've done that. That is why doc says I'm nuts!
Smokey Valley stanchions are too short. Why do I say that? I bought a SMV GP9/18/20 kit and saw they were noticeable shorter than the P2K and a host of others. Scrap the SMV. I drilled out the P2K stanchions and bent my own wire.
Pick up a less fortunate P2K on the "bay" for parts.
PSC used to make brass stanchions and plastic stanchions. But I've no clue if PSC still offers the parts. I've been told that you call PSC direct and they will at times make the parts for you.

I've never had problems with Walthers, but you can't expect them to send free parts for used engines. Because these are made off in China they probably do not have any spares.

You won't be able to get handrails for old Proto 2000 production GP9's. I called the parts guy at Walthers for missing parts from an old NIB Proto 2000 4427 PS hopper car and was flat out told they don't carry anything for the older pre-Walthers Life-Like releases. About the only thing they do have is spare axle wheelsets to help with the cracked gear syndrome, and they now charge for them. I scratchbuilt the missing frame and sill components for the hopper that my kit was missing (and did a damn good job of it, if I do say so m'self...)
