I haven't seen it posted here yet, but it looks like Rapido will announce a new locomotive at the Springfield show in January. So anyone have ideas what it can be? Six body styles and nose variations make it sound like an EMD product. One of the clues is it has been produced before so would it be a SD40-2? Maybe a GP38-2? Or a F7! Or it could be the GE U-boat family since they share a similar frame, but they were not purchased by Canadian roads which it seems Rapido focuses on. It has six completely different body styles plus even more nose and other detail variations, which is a record for us. The tooling is so complex that Bill has himself twisted into a Bronx Terminal track plan trying to keep track of which doodad goes with what schmengy for which railroad and era. This is going to be one of those Rapido models that sends everyone to eBay with their old models of the same prototype. Mark my words - within weeks of launching this new model, any manufacturer that has done this prototype in the past will quickly announce a new run to try and skim off some of our sales. Budd RDCs in numerous schemes & variations. All the clues are there, including a very telling photographic hint dropped by Jason not too long ago.

Looking at the grille pictured by Rapido I notice radiator shutters behind. That would not be an E. Now look at the grille and radiator shutters of the Rapido photo. Compare to CB&Q 9255 and EMD SW7 Looks familiar doesn't it.

SD40-2 had the chicken wire grills shown. It is not an SD40-2. They had stiffening ribs running over the grilles for strength. There are no ribs in the photo.

RS-18's in high and low nose versions would be another possibility. Some of the 18's had those chicken wire grills.

I think Jim has hit the proverbial nail on the head, it’s probably a switcher. The grill is a match and there are many variations in the body style. This is a smart move for Rapido! Who couldn't use a highly detailed switcher?

Who couldn't use a highly detailed switcher? I, for one, would really like a superb EMD "regular" switcher: the NW2 through the SW1200. But I surely don't see a match between the grill in Jim's sample and the Rapido sample. The screening on the switchers was made with woven wire; the sample appears to me to be expanded screen. To me, the parallel lines behind the screen are far too close together to represent the shutters on the switcher. It appears to me to be folded filter medium. If what I think I'm seeing is true, then the folds in the medium are parallel with the long axis of the screen. Typically, the folds run vertically. And, typically, the long axis of the screen is parallel with the long axis of the opening. Yeah. Typically. Except when not. I've spent too much time poking through fuzzy pictures, and haven't found a candidate. I was hopin' and a-wishin' for either an RS-11 or a C44-9w. If I scrinch my eyes around just right, I can almost believe it. Ed

An RDC makes the most sense. After all, a Canadian version hasn't been done yet.

One of the often-mentioned possibilities for a new Rapido locomotive is the MLW S-12/13 (very similar to the Alco S-6): Jason will need S-12/13s for passenger car switching at Toronto's Union Station. RDCs are a possibility too, but I haven't been able to find a good down-on photo of the roof-top radiator grills to see if they also look like the teaser photo. David

But is an RDC a "locomotive"? It does propel itself and could be MU-ed, but wasn't to push or pull anything else (at least not without voiding any outstanding warranty).

One of the often-mentioned possibilities for a new Rapido locomotive is the MLW S-12/13 (very similar to the Alco S-6): In the Rapido sample photo, the lines behind the screen are spaced such that there are about two per diamond. In the CN switcher photo, there looks to be about .2 lines per diamond. I'm just not seeing a similarity. If the horizontal lines in the Rapido photo are really filter medium, that means we are looking at an intake, not an exhaust. And, of course, we are also not looking at shutters, which are what most switchers exhibit. Ed

People may need one switcher, but not a fleet. A fleet of SD40-2s. And how can an obscure MLW switcher sell enough to make money back.

Given that the mesh grill is silver and assuming the background is not shutters but could be a radiator core, that would put the RDC back on top as the most likely candidate.
I'd still like to see Rapido produce the MLW S-12/13. These were the switchers I can remember working Union Station and at Spadina Yard.

The grill shown on the Rapido web site is not the same type of grill used on the SW switchers. The SW switcher that Jim posted a photo of has woven wire like a chain link fence. The photo on the Rapido web site is a grill made from expanded steel. Expanded steel has a tighter pattern. I not saying it is not a switcher, just not what Jim posted.
My guess for the first item is crossing gates. It says "when you see these in action". So it is something that moves or operates. They could be signals too, but I am guessing crossing gates or wig wags.
As for the second item, I am not even going to guess. I am fairly certain it is not a popular US prototype. The SD40-2 did not have 6 body styles and only had about 4 or 5 different nose lengths/ variations. Same for the GP38-2 with even less number of nose lengths/ variations. Rapido does not have a track record for offering main stream popular items. I really do like the fact that Rapido uses the technology available to produce some VERY nice models. 3D scanning is a great tool for producing accurate models. The first look at the FL9 looks fantastic. I have not purchased any Rapido models yet, but hopefully one day they will produce something I can use.

Well, Walther’s just rereleased their P2K RDC with upgraded “metal” finish, so I’m not sure how much demand is in the market for yet another RDC (Rapido quality or not). Thanks, Mark

Thanks, Mark My guess it's a RDC. I suspect there is a considerable demand for a "properly done" RDC. Although some online hobby shops are blowing out the Walthers plated version for $49.99 right now, the timing has to be right to have one hit the market at a high price point. A RDC with lights, sound, headlight/tail lights and operate at scale speed would sell. Personally, I like the upgraded plating on the Walthers RDC, but they made a few marketing errors on this last release. Not releasing or cancelling some road names, (VIA, Boston & Maine, Jersey Central Lines, etc.), not upgrading the motor and the original price point of $119.99 for a DC locomotive was a non-starter for me personally. Maybe down the road Jason will also tackle the Bombardier bi-level passenger cars (GO Transit) with all the bell and whistles.

It certainly does look like RDC's. I sure hope Rapido gets GN's RDC3.1 right. What with it not quite being a regular RDC3. And then there's this one, with the proper gearing, one hopes: Ed
