Copying the RTR Freight car thread.......What's your Favorite Locomotive purchase for 2014.
Here's mine 2014: Bowser Alco C430 Conrail (NYC & RDG) (beat out the Genesis GP40-2W Tiger Stripe) I can name my 2015 Locomotive already even though its not here yet but the pictures of the available schemes are tremendous
2015: Bowser C636 Conrail (PC Patch) It even beats out the Athearn SDP45 in Conrail (Not here Yet as well) Both are ordered so it counts

Wow! -- this is a TOUGH one, in a year that brought the Rivarossi U25Cs, Athearn SDP45s, Broadway Limited PRR H10s, and Bowser C430s and C636s. But I would have to say the Athearn SDP45 in Erie Lackawanna edges the others out if only because EL is my primary interest and I have wanted the SDP45 the longest.

4 Athearn Genesis D&RGW GP40-2s. Excellent attention to detail, including some very subtle variations in paint, all were perfect right from the box and they run very nicely. Locos I wish I could justify buying 'cause they're so cool...C430 and U25C.

Bowser C430 with Loksound.
Beautiful, well-executed models with outstanding sound -- especially the horn.

Very few loco purchases here, so a pretty easy choice for me...my Blackstone weathered Rio Grande Southern #40 finally arrived. Seen here tied onto the world's only narrowgauge RBL -- until the batch of 2 more I'm working on is finished, at least -- #40 is Plain Jane, but has a lot of character.

Mine was a Genesis NS GP38-2. Great detail, runs great and was perfect out of the box. I've preordered a SD70m and a SD60 in NS that I thought would be here in 2014, but they didn't make it. That's okay, I'll be happy whenever they get here. Not like I don't have any projects!

1. Walthers Alco RS-2 Lehigh Valley (both road numbers).
2. (after looking at and rejecting more than a dozen units that had defects) Athearn Genesis GP-7 Reading #636 in the modern green and yellow scheme.

I got some good ones this year (Bowser Reading and PC C430s, PC C636) but overall I think my favorite loco purchase was a pair of Genesis Erie Lackawanna SDP-45s. I can't get enough of that duo. This was also my first EL road name purchase in a locomotive. It would be nice to find one additional EL unit (not another SDP-45) to match up with the pair, perhaps an Athearn RTR SD-45. That would make for a neat contrast between the SDP-45 and SD-45.

I only purchased one locomotive during 2014, a Bowser C&O C630. This year will be a toss up between 2 Bowser C430s(undec), a Genesis EL SDP45 or 2 Bowser C636s (Alco Demo).

Locos I wish I could justify buying 'cause they're so cool...C430 and U25C. Did you get sound or silent Genesis GP40-2's? Despite being out of the country when the Athearn Genesis D&RGW GP40-2's came in last December, I managed to log in and order my 3 from England and they were waiting for me when I returned on Christmas eve. Those are my favorite loco purchase; I located and picked up the 4th number, #3130 recently. Two of the four have wavey side sills, but I've been told I can snap those in place after removing the shell. As for the Genesis SDP45, I was tempted being a fan of the SP in northern Californa, but passed on the original run SP because they represented "as delivered". Since I'm not going to run commuter service, the version with the large SP on the nose is a better fit for me, due later this spring - EL Bicentenial also coming for EL fans. Those went to freight service in the 80's and can run along with my SD45's and tunnel motors. Now I'm waiting for Athearn to announce the SP SD40 to round out my EMD SP fleet!

I bought several SCL units last year but my favorite is the Atlas/Kato RS1 lettered for a freelance railroad.

Hey Jim, I passed on the sound units, mine are just standard issue that I'll add DCC to, glad to hear you got all 4 numbers, esp. since the 3129, 3130 won't be likely re-issues. Finally, some perfect locomotives for the Ford Fast!

Mark,
I only had 3 sound equipped diesels so far and all came with QSI, so I wanted to try out a Tsunami - got D&RGW GP40-2 #3096 with sound - the rest are silent. What are you going to add for decoders?
Agree'd on the 1983 delivered late GP40-2's - might not be re-issued, although I generally like to buy mostly "typical" diesels so like the "peas in a pod" versions. Hopefully Athearn will offer more numbers down the road in a couple years. Mix those new GP40-2 with SD45's and maybe a GP40 and that should be pretty typical FF power!

Two D&RGW SD40T-2 from the ready to run Athearn. I love these engines. Scott WC Fan They are pretty darn nice for RTR engines! I bought one number from the last run last fall. Up until the last run I've bought nearly every number Athearn has produced (minus #5357 which the nose of the model doesn't match because it was rebuilt around 1978) which adds up to 14 individual SD40T-2 road numbers prior to the last release. I just added one more #5405 and called it good for now! That doesn't include a RGM&HS unnumbered Athearn D&RGW SD40T-2 and a blue box I'm modifying to match the #5386-5397 series never offered by Athearn.

Walthers Proto GE U30B in CB&Q for a mere $50. This engine gives a whole new meaning to 'stealth'. I need to put a sound decoder in it so you know the thing is running.
