So I was going thru some storage boxes and discovered I had a couple Walthers Gunderson 50' Hi-Cube Box Cars. The tooling looks pretty good and the painting is very good. Typical Walthers of a few years back, "user installed" grab irons. So was wondering how accurate is this car? Thanks Bob. Gunderson Box Car

One thing I do for a quick and dirty check is to compare against fallen flags. For example: www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-7122The BN looks to be the closest match I've found so far: The WC car is pretty close on the post pattern but the door and door stops are different - a stand-in at best. The other cars listed I haven't been able to find any photo's matching the Walthers car - the photo's I've found with the same road numbers have very different post patterns.

Bob add some cut levers and air brake hoses... give it some attention to weathering and you have a great siding or yard filler car.

The WC car looks to have a narrower door--not something I would call a close match.
Being a BN modeler, I love these cars.
THAT is more than enough for me.

As pointed out, they are almost dead nuts on for the 300 car 1994 BN Gunderson order. Add the grab irons, paint them, and a little detai and its not a bad car. No its not Genesis or Platinum Exactrail quality, but not every car has to be. It is lacking in the underframe detail, but if you want it, you can add it.
It is typical of the mid to late 90's Oregon built Gunderson 50 foot cars with the 12' Plug door. Jim the WC car you posted is a 10' PD Trenton Works built Gunderson box. You have to watch as there were significant detail differences between the cars built at the two plants, and between orders. Bill

Agree'd, the WC car is only a stand in - I removed "close" from my comment above. I just went through some fallenflags photo's to see what was there and how many were in the running. The BN car looks like the only one I found so far that really closely matches.
I had looked at the Walthers Gunderson paper box cars when they were first out but never got any. I was buying 90's era rolling stock at the time but have since cut bad to the 1980's and 70's so they are too new for me.

I have six of these, including all four CN (one of which is actually GTW registered). They're very nice cars, reasonably detailed and painted. They may not be 100% prototypical for every road they were painted for, but they do a wonderful job of adding the much needed variety to the long and numerous boxcar trains CN loved so much (and still seems to run a fair number of). Great cars for the price.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I added the handrails to the BN car. Some old Polly Scale Reading Green is 95% dead match to the factory paint. With some weathering it should be a nice car.
Looking back thru a box of receipts I found I paid $12.95 each. That works for me!

As others mentioned, the Walthers model is a good, basic model of the Gunderson prototype with the 12' door. It doesn't have a ton of extra details, but it also doesn't have anything molded on that would get in the way of upgrading the model. I think it's a good, affordable model of the prototypes that it's accurate for. I'd very much like to see someone produce a quality model of the Gunderson car with the 10' door, like these CSX cars (Michael Greer photo from Fallen Flags): The 10' door is easily distinguishable because of the lack of the vertical stiffener in the center of the top door panel (which is present on the 12' door prototype for the Walthers model). ExactRail produced the 12' door car in N scale, and I sincerely hope that they will offer the 10' door version in HO rather than duplicating the Walthers model (or maybe produce both versions!). There are tons of 10' door cars out there. Dave

The only real options for upgrading the model are the draft gear and the underbody brake rigging. I'll see if Nick Molo can chime in (I'll ask him on another list) and tell us what kind of cushioning these use. I'd guess that some of his Moloco parts will work. For the underbody, you'll basically need to detail it from scratch using the DA modern brake gear set or one of Moloco's. Then added etched crossover platforms on the ends to match your prototype. I'll do some research and follow up. Dave

For the draft gear, this is the answer I received on a yahoo list about a year ago when I asked the same question. Nick confirmed the use if item!
"The Moloco Freightmaster ME-10 EOCC units would work, but leave off the return springs as they've been removed from cars."

Thanks for the EOCC info - I thought that was the case but couldn't remember if it had been discussed in the past. As for the underbody, here's an example of the brake details on an ex-CP car: TR 405443Dave

thanks. Not sure if i'll go that route or not. Any particular etched brake platform? I checked out plano but there is nothing specific to these type of boxcars, unless i completely missed it.

Wasn't following any particular prototype really. They are going to be painted into freelanced railroads but I wanted to possibly upgrade some of the factory parts if at all possible. Are there alot of variations of the 50' hi cube?
