am mainly referring to the Accu-Rail,MTH,and Bachman open versions, but there may also be room for the Tichy cars and rebuilt versions. does any one have all of these cars. the Accu-Rail is a kit,but they may have snuck out some Accu-Ready RTRs. the MTH and Bachman cars seem to have used A-R cars in their catologs in the past, but the cars have been out long enuff now that what is shown should be thiers in the catalog pages. so any one have some input on those cars ? or why these cars have suddenly become popular ? the Tichy kit has been out since at least 1990.Edit-RTR cars from IMRC have been available for years also. the Accu-Rail car has been out since about 1995. and now there are the 2 RTR cars. they do fit home layouts well, but is there something else about them ? I can only comment about the Accurail and Tichy USRA hoppers, having several of the Accurail hoppers and only two of the Tichy hoppers (and one being kitbashed into something else. The Accurail cars are much simpler to build. If you don't do anything, painting the weights go a long way in improving them.
Accurail and Tichy solved the problem of clearance for larger than prototypical flanges two different ways. Accurail widened the car's side panels each about 1 scale inch. Tichy only widened their car's center panels 3 scale inches. Unfortunately, that throws the proportions of the car off. Instead of 6 equal width panels, one sees 2 narrow panels, 2 wide panels, and two narrow panels. For that reason a lot of model railroaders prefer the Accurail car over Tichy's USRA hopper. Look at this month's issue of RMC for improving the Accurail car.
I can't comment about the Bachmann or MTH hoppers as I don't have any right now.

Accurail for detail, accuracy I've been told, price and they're rather prolific putting out 3-packs and special runs of road names

James, never heard of the Tichy Panel spacing problem,Thanks. wont add to that fleet any more. what wasn't liked about the Tichy cars here was the Weights. havnt decided, but am thinking of leaving them off the bottom, weighting the inside bays, adding a load, and letting that be. Accu-Rail, like them, but don't like the short truck mounting screws, but can live with them. also like the Panel side, and Composite sided cars. don't think there is an exact match for the Composite car,but one or 2 in a train looks good. MTH and Bachman, am guessing they just cloned the Accu-Rail car,as both companies have no shame. but do they operate better than the A-R car ? unless either is found at a show for less than $9.99,wont ever get any,so wondering if any one here has experience with them ??
