My next project has started an Illinois Central E unit. I always like a IC E unit. I'm going to be modeling the late sixties version with the simplified paint scheme. I didn't pick out a number yet, so I working on the major body work. 8 by Timothy Alund, on Flickr I'm starting out with using a Broadway Limited E Unit. It's the newest run. IMG_0762[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr IMG_0763[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr IMG_0764[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr So the first thing I did was remove the "nubs" from the rear of the engine. IMG_0765[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr The next thing I'm working on is the steam generator. On the model its two generators. The IC only had one, so the removal begins. IMG_0766[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr I'm letting the styrine dry and going back to work on it Thurs.

I see they decided to include the grills with the undecs this time. Not that it matters much. The BLI grills from Plano are superior. I'm looking forward to watching this build.

John,
You may have pointed this out, but I hadn't noticed it before, but your cuts on the E8 nose to graft on the Highliners nose match the mold part lines on the BLI E8. How convenient!

I am looking forward to watching your progress. The Main Line of Mid America ran via Effingham Illinois and I got to see the various E units many times while watching the steam parade until late 1956 past Effingham. The E unit were indeed very nice looking in the Illinois Central paint scheme.

Boy, I'm going to love this one. Have you decided on what paint you are going to use? Are you going to try to match Walthers pass cars? And please note. If my eyes aren't deceiving me, your photo above is a one of a kind. Hard to tell on this phone. IC had one unit where the orange stripe was too wide. Didn't match the other units or the pass cars. If my eyes aren't deceiving me, your photo above is a one of a kind. Hard to tell on this phone. IC had one unit where the orange stripe was too wide. Didn't match the other units or the pass cars. Jl For the paint, there was a group of us that did a custom run of IC orange, IC brown, and IC yellow from Scalecoat. So that's what I'll be using. When you paint the engine or cars you do it in three layers. I'll show that when it's time to paint. On the stripe yes there was one or two of them where the orange stripe is just under the rivet line on the first panel on the side. I don't know if I'm going to do that or not yet. I think I have it narrowed down to 403_ don't know what yet. I'm heading down to the St. Louis RPM next weekend and on a hunt for good E unit pictures.

Lemme know if you figure out how to get more than 55SMPH out of it, without excessive voltage.

Lemme know if you figure out how to get more than 55SMPH out of it, without excessive voltage. Well I do know that I'm going to rip out their DCC chips and use WOW Sound with sugar cube speakers. But when I'm at that point I'll let you know.

Did some more work over the las ttwo days. IMG_0772[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr The steam generator I'm still working on right now I don't like the way it looks. I'm thinking of recessing the exhaust a little more. IMG_0773[1] by Timothy Alund, on Flickr

Highliner kits come with two steam generator exhaust stacks. You should be using the other one.

Nice build so far. Its great to see the final IC scheme being done.
The previous run of E8's from BLI had a single steam generator. So I assume that BLI has two E8 bodies? One with a single boiler and one with dual boilers?
What are you going to do with the too small winterization hatches and cooling fans?

It appears the boiler exhaust has a beveled base.

It is in the standard F-series A-unit kit. The beveled exhaust is found on the sprue with the porthole/louver inserts, next to the winterization hatch.

Are you going to add the radiator shutters in the opened up areas? I'd replace the BLI nose door with a Highliners nose door. That nose door headlight is much too large in comparison to the prototype. These models have Highliner nose doors which fit the BLI shell perfectly. You'll see how much smaller and more correct the headlight is in comparison to the BLI door.

I don't know what they were thinking with that nose door light. As far as I know, only the ATSF had the large lower light.

Back to the build. I found a coumpany in MI that sells the correct size chart tape that I can use to do my pin striping. So within the week or so I should have my engine and cars painted. Here it is in primer. I'm using Mr. Surfacer. Untitled by Timothy Alund, on Flickr Untitled by Timothy Alund, on Flickr After I primed the engine I noticed that I used the wrong plow and it should be a frieght pilot. So I used John's method of combining the BLI pilot on a highliner freight pilot together. Untitled by Timothy Alund, on Flickr

Wow- That looks good. I was curious as to whether or not the chartpac tape used would come off without lifting the paint. It seems pretty successful.
