From the builders photos in GA751's links it looks like the GN, ARR and B&M were built with roller bearing trucks. Tangent GN model appears to have the correct printing for that but not the right trucks (on the preproduction photo). The only currently available 70-ton ASF Ride Control truck with the noticeable "chin" and correct visible spring package is an easy fix for modelers by way of the Exactrail 70-ton ASF Ride Control truck. Two minutes and you're done, save the Tangent trucks for another project. Exactrail 70-ton ASF ride control truck

Thanks Rob and David for the photo's. David, I do have some of your UP quads and do plan on getting more as funds become available. It depends on what time frame one is modeling the Utah coal trains. It seems like late 1960's thru mid-1970's, before the appearance of the quad hoppers, it was the Utah Rwy coal cars and a mix of UP hoppers, many of them older 2-bay and some 3-bay (Bowser type). Just for the odd UP older hoppers, have either of you identified good models to toss in for a little variety in that regard? Cheers, Jim Jim, UP's primary car prior to the quads was the Pressed Steel triple, as offered in HO by Trix. UP rostered approximately 2,000 of them. Additionally, I believe UP and DRGW drop bottom gondolas were prevalent at least until the mid 1960s. Once again, UP only had 100 of the 3 bay 100 ton hoppers. David Lehlbach Tangent Scale Models

David Lehlbach Tangent Scale Models That's good info, I'm going to take a look at the Trix car. I ordered three of the PS-3s last night, two in UTAH and one GN, plus three other cars. I bought six other cars from Tangent last week, they arrived in four days. Good packing and box design. No broken, loose, or missing parts. Plus Tangent's web interface is well-designed. Other manufacturers take note.

David, I had forgotten about the Trix hoppers - which are hard to find btw. My earliest cut-off date is 1965 for regular modeling purposes, but my primary focus now is 1970 thru the late 1980's.
I've only got 10 of the Bowser 3-bay's and from the photo's it looks like more than 10 were used in some of the Utah Rwy coal trains in early-mid 1970's; they also appear to have been used in the early days of the UP/D&RGW Kaiser Coal Liner Thrall gons equipped trains as well, perhaps to suppliment until the addition Thrall gons were purchased (per Jim Eager).
I don't plan on buying anymore Bowser 3-bays and will focus my resources on the Tangent cars and, if I can find them, the Trix hoppers.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, the GN PS-3 in the Tangent photo has another design that nobody offers in HO that I know of. It looks like a roller bearing version of the National type C-1, which I've seen called a National Atlas truck. Whatever the name it's distinctive and it would be nice to see a good model of it. Front Range had a roller bearing truck with a similar spring pattern but the tooling was so bad it didn't look like much of anything.

IIRC didn't Moloco also announce the larger 2900 cu. ft version?

Atlas has actually produced models of PS-3 ribbed triple hoppers of both 2750 and 2960 cu. ft. capacity -- in N scale only.

National C-1 trucks of several designs have been made by ECW about a decade ago. these are 3 piece kits that can be a PITA to line up correctly, but look good assembled. 50/70 ton Solid Bearing. 70 Ton Roller Bearing. 100 Ton Super C-1 Roller Bearing Atlas has a 70 Ton C-1 Solid Bearing that looks based on the GN trucks, as not all C-1s look exactly alike, seems different Foundries had different ideas of casting them. I would also buy the Southern earlier "Roman" lettering...and just get more Undecs...for the block gothic lettering...
These cars will be mixed in with NW cars in (early 1982-83) NS interchange with MP at Karnak IL.
MP hauled the cars to the Joppa IL power plant behind GP38-2s and GP15-1s on train 408...
My cars arrived today...and they are SUPERB.
Thanks Dave!

My kits came in last week as well, and I'm still trying to make head over tail of the weights. David, do you know when the kit instructions will be posted for the kit builders amongst us? Great car, this is a really great car.

Hello. This is my first post on this forum. I've had a ton of fun looking this site over and seeing a lot of great models done by great modelers. I model the L&N in the 77-80 time frame(The Coal Boom years)and the 2750's were a hopper sorely missing from my collection. First off thank you Tangent for producing them. They definitely fill a need in the wanted car model market. I purchased 3 undec kits with heap shields so that i could make my own later L&N cars with the italic lettering scheme. The only complaint that i have is the kits come without any instructions and there are some parts that i don't have any idea when they belong on the model. Once i either get instructions or figure out where everything goes,i will paint them up,decal them with Curt Fortenberry's L&N 70 ton hopper decals, weather them and then post pictures of them. I'm excited. Tangent;could you please help a modeler out? Andrew Long.

Andrew, welcome to the group! David normally posts instructions in PDF form to the Tangent website a little while after releasing the model. I'm guessing he's probably scrambling to get them finished and will have them done in a month or so. He usually sends out an email to notify customers that the instructions have been posted. Make sure you're signed up for his newsletter.

We are working on instructions for the cars now, and hope to have them completed within two weeks. Go to our "Downloads" page on our website www.tangentscalemodels.com/downloads/ to check out the quality of instructions we provide (which is one of the reasons why they sometimes take an extra few days). In the meantime, if you are impatient, we will handle swaps for RTR gray painted cars if you want to go that route. We want you to be happy! Contact Tangent directly please to communicate with us - see our website at the "Contact" tab. Thank you, David Lehlbach Tangent Scale Models

I ordered one of the bright red Great Northern's from Klein's Thursday. I'll be painting it black as the Boston & Maine did when they got these cars, but leaving the herald partly showing through, as happened on several of the B&M's cars. I hope to at least approach the beautiful job the Soo Line Historical Society offered on Accurail models: black Soo cars with their former Belt Railway of Chicago name and herald still visible.

I'll try to dig out an old issue of the B&M historical society's magazine that covered the railroad's freight cars into the 1970's, if I'm remembering right, over the weekend. That should allow me to answer your question, "omaharoad".
Meanwhile, my GN car reached me this morning. It's beautiful and apparently flawlessly assembled. I may actually feel a little guilt about marring its pristine appearance when I proceed to subject it to the partial repaint I've planned.

Very nice cars. I was wondering if the GN cars made it into the BN era.

David Thank you for your kind and considerate offer, but I wouldn't feel right about it. I bought the kits so that I can enjoy putting them together. You've earned my respect by making the offer to upgrade my kits to undec RTR cars, but I don't want you to lose money in the process, plus I'm not greedy. I'll wait until you have the instructions done before I get started on putting them together. Besides I've waited this long to have them,I can wait a little longer. Also you have forever earned my business. I'm putting in orders now for a Lehigh Valley X-58(white and green),a PC 4750 cov hopper(I missed the first run of them because I wasn't working at the time) and if you're so bold more regular L&N Beth quads and a PS-3 2960 80 ton hopper for L&N as well. Thank you,Andrew.

A quick websearch netted the following. Boston and Maine purchased 300 PS-3 hoppers in 1957. These cars were leased out at various times. According to this website, 150 of these were leased to the GN from 1962 to 1972. I question the start date of this lease as I've seen builders photos of the cars in GN paint, and had previously been told they were immediately leased from the builder. www.faracresfarm.com/jbvb/rr/bmrr/freight.html

For the GN: GN 70000-70299 (300 cars) built for GN 1957 (assigned BN number group 513000-513299) GN 70300-70399 (100 cars) built for GN 1960 (assigned BN number group 513300-513399) GN 70800-70949 (150 cars) built for B&M 1957. BUT. They appear as GN cars in my July 1958 ORER. Did B&M REALLY order these cars? ? Whether or not, USRE took ownership and leased them to GN "immediately". Then, around 1972, they moved from GN to B&M. Somehow. (I'm not finding any BN number group for these--probably didn't get any--I expect BN figured they wouldn't be around long enough to need a series) From the April 1971 ORER, BN had listed under GN 297 of the first group, 100 of the second, and 150 of the third. No cars in the BN number series. Thus 3 gone. The only photo I have of one of the "B&M" cars has it painted black, as opposed to vermilion. And it doesn't have the billboard lettering. The photo is dated 1969. Maybe it's been repainted, maybe not. The paint is in GREAT shape, but GN was pretty nice to its big hoppers. And it has a great big (well, maybe not that big) USRE stencil on it. While BN DID receive these cars, as indicated by their presence in the April 1971 ORER, they do not appear in my next issue: January 1973. And, as a side note, BN/GN magically found two of the three missing cars mentioned above. Presto-zappo. Ed
