James, Excellent review! Two points you may not be aware of... The "flag" baggage is the "Council Bluffs" and that scheme is post 2007. The "Art Lockman" as lettered 6334 was previously numbered the 904304 prior to 2001. So that pair could be used as part of modeling post-2007 UP executive/excursion trains (but unfortunately nobody yet makes the proper steam excursion tenders or modernized E9s for the post-2007 era, not even in brass). The Walthers models cars are close but the detail on sides and bottom are generic - not meant to exactly match those exact prototypes (like the other UP Exec fleet cars). For example the steps at the lower corners of the doors on the model are much narrower than those on the Art Lockman tool car prototype, and the bottom details on the two prototype cars are much different from each other. Flag is pretty well done on Walthers model but does not wrap into the door sides as the prototype does (and OMI model does). Some hand painted adjustment to that, and adding the missing door side grabs would make it closer. Adding/correcting the bottom details would be a much larger project. As always, you're a wealth of knowledge. I was aware the baggage car is called Council Bluffs, but they recently added a shorter car with the flag scheme called Promontory as well. I have the brass versions of both the Art Lockman and the Council Bluffs so I may hold on to them as more accurate representations. But boy are they a bear to pull when in long consists. It took three good pullers to manage a brass consist of 12 cars. -James

Kudos to UP for that car. Awesome looking. With Steam, Heritage Units, and cars like this, UP deserves credit.

Other than the number, the flag car appears closest to UPP 5779, "Promontory", which retains its 6 wheel trucks. UPP 5769 "Council Bluffs" was equipped with 4 axle trucks when rebuilt in 2000.
There are numerous detail differences, but these will be good standins until I get around to building more accurate versions.

Wow, I didn't even notice that the Walthers flag car model still has the 3-axle trucks... Oops...
From the same company doing "all-purpose" well cars without the 5th wheel to support trailers (a part that they have made in past) comes the UP flag baggage car (for $79.95 MSRP) with 3-axle trucks instead of the correct 2-axle trucks (which they make)...

Actually, the Walthers truck is a shorter wheelbase than the UP cars use. They would have been OK if they'd done 5779 like Kato did in N scale. Still, an easy fix all in all to get very close.

Thanks for the review! I didn't even know these were coming... Caboose shows them as on-order.

Are these cars actually available now? Or did the reviewer somehow get a early sample?

They are on the street, and the flag ones are incorrect. Hopefully Walthers will recall them and redo them with the correct 2-axle trucks.

I would venture to guess they know the trucks are incorrect. Walthers uses a one size fits all setup for some cars and hanging things can cause problems. For example putting the two axle trucks on these cars causes the wheels to rub on the car bottom due to design. So I think you're stuck with the way it is or brass. I currently have both and will keep the Walthers version for a good Promontory stand in. -James

I am looking forward to getting mine which I thought I ordered. Unfortunately, I have to wait until the second run. I checked a number of on-line resellers and they either do not list it or indicate it is sold out. I am sure that I could get one somewhere, but at this point, I would just as soon wait.
