Anyone know of a source for passenger car sides brass, plastic or otherwise? I've done some looking and come up with nothing so far. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe Walthers had kits for the converted ex-US Army hospital cars, if you can find any. Everything else was pretty much older heavyweight stuff. I managed to find a Walthers troop sleeper-to-express boxcar conversion painted in the red-and-white scheme a few years back. Right now I'd be happy with any old AHM, IHC, or Concor set in Monon. I believe at least one of them produced a stand-in set from the usual suspects. I hope someone else has better suggestions.

The only lightweight cars Monon had were the ex-hospital cars. They had 20 and several. So figuring out how to mass produce some would be a good thing. "Someone" could do the sides. I can't tell if you can use a typical core kit, or not. Looks close.
The Walthers Monon troop sleeper conversion is something to research and find. E-bay, etc.
That leaves heavyweights. More research, photos, etc.
All this depending on how accurate you want to be. And how much you want to spray paint.
If you want off-the-shelf, I think you'll be buying IHC. They are listing 4 Monon cars on their site, right now. And I think they've done others. Not the world's most wonderful, but they're RTR. I guess.

Ed, Thanks for the tip. It's not so much wanting RTR, but it's that or scratchbuilding -- and I've got other projects of higher priority. Right now, I'm just looking at something to put behind my high-hood C420.

Thanks for the replys guys. I definitely don't need RTR. Knowing that the coaches with the large Windows were former hospital cars certainly helps. I know Overland ran some a few years ago. I can handle building the heavyweights and headend stuff, I was just at a loss for the large window cars.

Mike, Something like this?: SNIP Pretty much. I actually favor the gold and black, even though I'm from the IU end of the system. So I may end up painting some other stand-ins as an alternative. AFAIK, Mont Switzer's decal line is still available and definitely a useful resource if you plan to build or paint. www.greatdecals.com/Switzer.htm

ARR had a large number of Pullman troop and kitchen cars which were rebuilt for all sorts of uses. He is a photo by, I think, John Combs showing two troop cars. One factory height and one stacked pair. These cars stayed on their Allied, Chrysler or Bettendorf trucks to the end.

My memory is hazy on this, but I THINK Walthers also used its tooling for craftsman-type kits for hospital cars to make circus cars that came with decals for Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey. The circus objected and Walthers had to stop selling those. But that's one more possibility to search for at hobby shops or shows and/or on eBay.

Model Railroad Warehouse used to have etched brass wrapper kits for the hospital cars.
For a while they were taking advance reservations for wrappers for the Monon cars, but dropped the project this past summer when they did not get enough interest.
