Paul,
For some weird reason the Life Like P1K version, specifically the New Haven flavor (I have two), has a grainy finish (Those of you that own one take a look). Made me wonder because the other P1K silver painted RDCs came with smoother silver finishes (yes, I checked). I assumed that "strange happenings" occurred at the factory when the NH versions were being painted.
[/quote] It wasn't just the NH P1K RDCs. My WP came in a "flake infused bronze." With no decals for the Zephyrette, there is no salvaging it with metalizer. Rapido, please bring on the RDC-2

Antonio, If you're talking about the original LLP1K RDC-2, they all have that grainy finish. It was LL's attempt at making a metallic finish...and they failed horribly. The later RDC-3 and RDC-1's were more conventionally painted in silver by LL. The last run of RDC's, this time from Walthers, were all plated. They look all the same, and have the same finish as the Metroliners and other Walthers SS cars.

Today Dan Darnell, Matt Herman and I went to Bob Fallowfield's layout to shoot a video of the RDC in action. If the video footage sounds any bit as good as the real model, anyone who sees this will order it. We were all blown away. Below is a photo of the RDC on Bob's layout. I hope to have the video edited by Tuesday or Wednesday and then I'll post the link. Since I posted that the New Haven RDC is threatened, we've seen a bunch of New Haven orders. I think the word is getting out. -Jason

I've decided to hold out for an as-delivered CNR RDC3. That way I can spring for a FA-2 this go-round.

Yeah - we're not sure why some of them are so low so far. Hopefully when the big distributor orders come in we see a real change. We get about 50% of our orders on the day of the deadline, and there is always the possibility (it's happened before) that one of our distributors is sitting on a PILE of New Haven or B&M orders and will send them in on the deadline. Amazingly, C&EI already has a lot of orders. Now why would we have more advance orders for C&EI than New Haven? No clue. -Jason C&EI only had one...but it was an important one...It was the last passenger service unit to deep Southern Illinois...Chicago to Cypress IL...I ordered a C&EI unit, personally...with sound.

I certainly hope the sound files for the RDC include the sounds of rattling stainless steel panels. An Esquimalt & Nanaimo RDC scared the the bejabbers out of me one morning at Goldstream Park on Vancouver Island. Tracks were about 25 feet from my tent, hidden in a shallow cut.

We do indeed plan to record the VIA units for when we do Cummins-equipped models. Currently the prototypes for all of our models had Detroit 110 engines. -Jason

I was surprised to see RDCs still in actual service anywhere in North America. Even the SVP2000s are gone, at least as self propelled DMUs. I actually got to run a production SVP 2000 at Budd's Red Lion plant back when I was young,

Anyone remember the Broadway "Order-O-Meter" or something they had posted on their website. It tracked preorders needed to allow production, and when reached, announced "production" etc.

I guess production run numbers are kind of confidential but it would be great if some sort of order-o-meter was a staple on manufacturer's web sites.
Of course that doesn't get around the fact that, as Jason wrote, distributors do not submit their orders until the deadline. It would be great if their was a submission date and then another final submission date a week later for catch-alls and Johnny-come-latelies and fence-sitters. Kind of like probation and double-super-secret probation, or whatever it was, from "Animal House."
