It's a lovely morning in Washington so I packed a couple things and made the short trip to my favorite photo location, the marina in downtown Des Moines. Nothing new, I but I find the photography to be an enjoyable process. Have a great Sunday! Best, Mark Here's GP9 5924 Here's the CB&Q XM-4 in better sunlight. In the interest of those on the fringes of the internet, I'm cutting down my usual pic display size here in SPF. You can click through to get them in their full-size edition, as well as follow to a stand-alone article here that is more pic-intensive. Switching the Crater Lake Stone Mill in Purgatory. Climbing to Summit... Passing the work train in Summit siding. Finally, a link to where you get to peer underneath the pretty scenery to see the subbasement. atlasrescueforum.proboards.com/thread/4660/all-offCongrats to Sammy on making the RMC cover!

I did a quickie kitbash of a GM&O flatcar rebuilt with low sides for work train service. Naturally, the prototype photo I used was from the 80s so I decided to backdate the capacity data back to what it might have looked like 25 years earlier, prior to multiple re-stenciling and addition of lube plates, ACI labels, etc. For now it will serve as the boom tender for my 120-ton crane; that is, until I build a proper boom tender for it (GM&O usually used chopped down passenger cars for this purpose).

Here's a project that I've been working on and off for couple years. Several years ago, a vendor at a local show had a Detail Associates drop-bottom gon kit for sale. While having absolutely no need for it, it was one of those kits that I wanted since seeing the articles on them when the kits came out in the 80's. For those that haven't built one, they are a joy to build. The only problem is that there is no weight to them [the kit is practically all plastic]. Once built, it sat on the shelf unpainted and unlettered until I decided on a load for it. Fast forward to last year when on a business trip to Denver. I had some time to kill on the last day and visited Caboose Hobbies where I bought an Owl Mountain Lumber Load [and built it for a Red Caboose flat]. That got me to thinking. What if I narrowed the Owl Mountain Lumber load by a "board" and used it to weigh the GS gon? It almost worked perfectly; the only issue is that the load pretty much fills the inside of the gon, hiding most of the detail. 102_0855 by James Bilbrey, on Flickr Paint is Testors [Polly-Scale], and lettering is from a Champ set that I bought right before they closed. It is missing some stenciling [No way I was going piece together "Clamshells and other mechanical devices must not be used to load or unload this car".], and the logo on the end is too big. But, it is finished except for the brake hoses on order. James Bilbrey LaVergne, TN

I finally finished up the SP PC&F B-100-32 40ft Copper Anode car. After hearing interest in the car, I've decided to add it to the line of Cannon and Company Laser Cut craftsman kits. I still need to build a page for it in the shopping cart, so look for it there in a week or so. Dave Hussey Cannon and Company

Wow, there's really a lot of good work here this week. Thanks for the inspiration. I managed to get one of my caboose projects painted this week, but there's still much work to be done. Here's SSW 41 so far:

Ryan, sweet looking caboose! Mark, love those photo's of your in natural light by the marina. BTW, I just stumbled onto a really nice photo' posted on TrainOrders of your red Burlington box car: www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4021392 Been busy all weekend with house chores with the wife; put in a new small herb/veg garden in the corner and cleaned up some of the borders with bark etc. so no train time but it's Monday now so I'll move things forward on the layout - work on the borders of the river and more hopefully.

I finally finished up the SP PC&F B-100-32 40ft Copper Anode car. After hearing interest in the car, I've decided to add it to the line of Cannon and Company Laser Cut craftsman kits. That's great news, Dave! I've been wanting to model a couple of these cars for a long time and just never got around to upgrading the old Athearn model (I think that was roughly the same prototype). Are these essentially the same as the SP B-100-34 class cars? www.railgoat.railfan.net/spcars/byclass/box/b100-34.htmwww.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=8705I'd like to model one of each class for variety and maybe one SP and one GVSR. On a side note, I think you were working on adding a BN PC&F (or Berwick?) 50' box car to the store. Any luck with that one? Great stuff this week, everyone! Dave

Dave As far as I can tell the B-100-32 and-34 are essentially the same. The -32 was built in 1972 and the -34 in 73/74 and the numbers are sequential. I've got several other cars I have made (and sold in Portland) but I had run out of Moloco roofs for the bundles so I never added them to the shopping cart. But I just got a re supply so I'll be adding them soon. Additionally for folks in the Northwest I'll have them at the PNW RPM in Monroe WA on May 20. Here is the GN/BN Berwick with a10ft plug door in BN paint (FC-4010) and a PCF with earlier GN/BN V bar door in GN.
