Hello Group, I'm working on a Rail Shop H30 kit and want to add the exposed roller bearing trucks found on some cars. So, who makes these in HO? I know they're available, but can't seem to find them. These may not be the correct type trucks for the H30, but the photo shows the exposed roller bearing feature. Thanks, Mark

Rapido makes a style of trucks similar to the ones pictured, but not exactly. This is another source, but I don't think it's as well done as the Rapido set and I don't recall who produced it. rapidotrains.com/ho-scale-freight-car-trucks/

Mark, MDC/Roundhouse offered a version of a convertible truck when they were still their own operation, however, those were "Bettendorf" convertible trucks, and not the 70-ton or 77-ton ASF Ride Control version you are seeking. Rapido makes a similar style, but again, it isn't the correct truck since the prototype rode on ASF A-3 open journal converted trucks. This site may also help you with identifying the proper series of cars and the trucks they were equipped with originally, however, many of these cars entered MofW service at some point as sand cars. Also the H30 vs. H30A rebuilds likely changed trucks. prr.railfan.net/freight/classpage.html?class=H3070-ton ASF A-3 Ride Control trucks with plain bearings are made by Kato, Tangent Scale Models, and Tahoe Model Works, though none feature open journal faces. Any of these trucks are a thing of beauty, and you may end up compromising on the trucks if you have to "have" the open journals.

Rapido, Trains Canada, Eastern Carworks, MDC Roundhouse, Others? have made similar trucks trough the years. None currently show up in stock at Walthers. eBay is likely to be your best source. None of the above are ACF. The Trains Canada is close, but heavier. The spring cluster is not quite spaced the same, but it has two springs outboard.

Thanks all for the replies.
I have a set of Kato ASF ride control trucks in my parts inventory and will just use those. It would have been neat to add trucks with the open journal feature, but it’s not a big deal. Maybe someone will offer these down the road.
Thanks again, MJ

The Trains Canada and MDC Roundhouse trucks are identical, down to the packaging -- but not the actual printing *on* the packaging. I believe this truck is a 50-ton truck, while the Rapido is a 70-ton truck. I have photos of both somewhere, including packaging, if people are interested to see them.

Are you kidding? These trucks are about as different as you can get!

If this was my project I would use the Rapido truck to get the exposed bearings. While not an exact match, for me having the exposed bearings would be of a higher priority. Sometimes we as modelers have to go with what's available, depending on what feature of the prototype we're trying to match.

Nobody makes that exact truck in HO. You can get either a matching truck with solid bearings, or an incorrect truck with retrofitted roller bearings, but not both on the same one. Tangent has the right truck, an ASF 70-ton solid bearing type, with the matching sideframe and spring pattern www.tangentscalemodels.com/product/70-ton-asf-3-ride-control-trucks-metal-wheels-1-pair/ . They are available with both code 110 and code 88 wheelsets. Rapido has Barber trucks with retrofit roller bearings, but with incorrect sideframes and the wrong spring pattern for the truck in your photo rapidotrains.com/ho-scale-freight-car-trucks/ . Compared to Tangent, the tooling is nowhere near as sharp, and the wheelsets don't have a very realistic contour, although they could be replaced.

There was another company that made a roller bearing conversion truck years ago. I have no clue the exact style, and can't remember the name either. E&B?? I don't have an old Walthers catalog here to look it up.
I'm sure the newer offerings while not exact look much better anyway.

I believe you're right, Colin. And IIRC it was a pretty crude looking one, too.

I believe you're right, Colin. And IIRC it was a pretty crude looking one, too. The problem with the ECW truck was the plastic that it was molded in. Even lubed, the axle would wear into the plastic, effectively gradually lowering the car. It might be useable (long term) with a brass or delrin bushing added; as is, it is okay (yes a bit crude, but at least semi-correct) for display, not so much for operation. I have a few completed cars in storage with ECW trucks awaiting a layout, but those trucks will need to go before any operation occurs. Jim

Thanks, Mark Mark, as has been shown in this post, it appears the Tangent truck is spot on except for the roller bearing conversion. The MDC conversion featured separate (detached) roller bearing journals as pictured in your post. If you don't mind cutting the journals off the Tangent truck and gluing on the MDC ones, you should get what you want. Warning though, the trucks and journals of both are "engineering plastic" so you'll need a good adhesive to make them stick. I have a pair of the MDC trucks if you need them. Message me on this board.

Reading this topic I had a crazy modeling idea.. What years would those Barber trucks with retrofit roller bearings be good for?
My thought is a modernized 40' boxcar with lowered ladders and removed roof walk in 77/78. I'm sure the 40' boxcar would be rolling up its last miles before being taken out of service.

I have a lot more under 50' boxcars, covered hoppers, tank cars, cabooses. MKT, 1977. Refurbished for munitions service and renumbered in 1971. There are a ton of photos out there, here are 6 of 40' box cars that I had bookmarked and tagged. Except for the MKT car, those look like ASF trucks. It would be nice if we had more options for trucks with the retrofitted roller bearings considering how common they were. Given the quality of their usual tooling, I'd like to see ExactRail or Tangent take a shot first.

That would be great, assuming ExactRail is making new tooling; for more than a year it seems only re-runs being made by ER anymore. Stuff I need yes, but new tooling?

That would be great, assuming ExactRail is making new tooling... They were just cited as an example. I don't care who in particular would do a new truck with retrofitted roller bearings, but I do hope it would be sharp, high quality tooling. As a direct side-by-side comparison of renditions of the same truck, consider this: Above is Tangent's Barber 70-ton roller bearing truck. The tooling is nice and crisp, and looks like it could have been assembled from multiple separate parts. In addition, the wheels have a decent contour. Here's the supposedly same truck from Rapido, which for all I can tell was tooled into warm butter with a dull knife. The bolster and spring detail is very crude, with thick cross sections and no sharpness at all. The wheels have unrealistic flat faces, but again they can be replaced. There are more trucks we need in HO. If a poorly done model hits the market first, it can discourage somebody else from tackling it, as the initial product may still soak up demand if nothing better is available at the time. If Rapido can address the issues with some if its trucks, I'd be happy to support them if they ended up with a nice product. They can certainly do good work on other stuff.

I agree Rob. I guess Rapido is a moot point if Jason has canceled their trucks; maybe part of the reason was they weren't happy with the tooled into warm butter appearance

There's an old ATSF tank car in Saginaw Yard with some of these trucks. There's another example in Cleburne of a BN tool car (ex CB&Q boxcar) with similar trucks. In fairness, these examples don't move often or go far, but they add to the character of the yard.

Thanks, Mark Although probably not what you are looking for, a while back "Trains Canada", 3801 16th Street S.E., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, T2G 4W5 (Phone 403-265-3351) produced an HO Scale Bettendorf Conversion Truck frames. They did not include wheel sets. The package contained a pair of truck frames that had exposed roller bearings in the pocket on the side frame. There are also a set of bearing covers to apply to represent a friction bearing configuration. The roller bearing cap inside the friction bearing pocket has very shallow detail for the bearing cap. Part number was 1-3051 I have been unable to find any reference to them on my searches.

My thought is a modernized 40' boxcar with lowered ladders and removed roof walk in 77/78. I'm sure the 40' boxcar would be rolling up its last miles before being taken out of service. Trucks with the retrofit roller bearings could be found in revenue service up through 1994 when they were apparently banned from interchanged and after that in MOW service. In addition to what Colin 't Hart posted, I briefly looked through my photo collection and found them under some L&N boxcars dating from 1973 on up. I also apparently found a SAL ARA boxcar [the Atlas car] with the conversion trucks while in SCL MOW service. And, I took a photo of an ex-RDG 40' boxcar in MOW service that still had those trucks in 1998. One just has to be careful as sometimes friction-bearing trucks with their journal lids open can appear to be retrofitted trucks at a quick glance. Also in contrast to the 40' boxcar, the E-L ordered some ACF hoppers with 100-ton friction-bearing trucks that were later converted to roller-bearings: EL 20013James Bilbrey LaVergne, TN
