I have some Athearn and Atlas locomotives, that I wish to detail, where can I find metal stanchions for the hand rails?

Search Precision Scale or Cal-Scale. Smokey Valley produced kits in the past but they are hard to come by new.

It seems Smokey Valley is pretty much a make-to-order operation now. Last spring, I e-mailed Mr. Larry about the possibility of producing several stanchion/handrail kits. He said he could. It took a while, but I received what I ordered later that summer; there was no pre-pay, I paid when invoiced and the items were ready to ship.
The quality is still excellent.

Good to hear they are still being made, even if the process is a little slow.

Precision Scale is made to order as well. They offer a two week or so turnaround...and the castings are VERY NICE. These are the old PIA stanchions.

Precision Scale stantions are cored.022,PIA are not cored. They are open on the back meaning you don't have to slide the stantions on before you form the wire. I have both and prefer the PIAs Steve Draper

Not a fan of Smoky Valley stanchions at all as they're around 6 scale inches too short. This makes a huge difference on GP's that use full height MU stand such as PRR's GP9s. Not to mention that they're not the cleanest castings I've ever seen...

Back when they used to (sometimes) be available in hobby shops, you had to paw through the whole selection to find enough clean ones to do an entire locomotive. Many (or most) of the ones I saw looked like they had been salvaged from the Titanic.

Thanks for the memory jog (sucks gettin'old) I remember it being mentioned some time ago. I did look on Precision Scale's web site and looked in their catalog but didn't see them listed. Hard to sell if you don't list I would think. It really doesn't matter much to me because I have a large stash of PIA/PFM sets so I'm in no need.

What do you guys use to clean these stanchions, especially smokey valley ones with what appears to be a white powdery residue.

I like the Utah Pacific stanchions, too. They are cored for .015" wire.

PSC has some nice 1st generation EMD stanchions, although I've seen them cored different sizes so you might have to be careful ordering.

i soaked several packs of smokey valley stanchions that i had in vinegar for nearly a day. There is still this white substance in the area of where the handrails will be soldered too. Other then scraping it out, is there anything else to use to clean these?

The best way I have found to clean these stanchions is a wire wheel on my Dremel. I clean the entire sprue before I remove any to work with them more.
Smokey Valley stanchions are nice, I have also emailed with no response in the last week, but I used the email on the Train Ready Products site. I do use the Utah Pacific stanchions for my GE projects, they seem to be good up thru the Dash 7 series and some Dash 8's.

A little brass or fiberglass pencil type brush will remove the white stuff which is the mold material on investement castings .Its handy for cleaning soldering areas too.

I was able to successfully solder the stanchions and handrails on my slug project. I'll put some pics in weekly thread.
