The undec model is of a Gunderson-Concarril 7550 cf double plug box car. This version (with eaves) was first built 4=9/03 for TBOX 660000-660499. Gunderson-Concarril built an earlier version without eaves and with 8 side posts on each side of the door, plus a few other differences from the model.
The version with eaves (Walthers version) were built for: AOK 112000-112149 (150) 11/03=1/04 TBOX 660000-660499 (500) 4=9/03 TBOX 660500-660799 (300) 1=4/04 TBOX 660800-661199 (400) 1=5/05
Now, looking at the cars they've shown on their web site. Most are NOT Gunderson-Concarril cars...
CP 218000-218374 (375) NSC 7630 cf 5=8/01 Differences: No eaves Side posts wider at bottom Third side post from end is not wide No riveted jack pad Different side sill

I really like the Hi-Cube 60' boxcars. These appear to be the same models that Athearn Produced right? I also liek the 60' Gunderson Boxcar from Athearn in the TTX scheme. I really like the high profile of this model and the Athearn Models too.

I really like the high profile of this model and the Athearn Models too. These are newer (post-2000) prototypes as Darrell mentioned above. The good news is that it’s a correct model of one of the TBOX prototypes; the Athearn model is a stand-in, unfortunately, although it definitely looks good. The only HO model that matched a TBOX prototype up to this point was the short-lived Hubert’s 60’ box car, which was an NSC prototype, if I recall correctly (I have a couple of their undecorated models stashed away). I think it actually matched the CSXT series that Darrell mentioned above also. Always good to see a new box car model, but this prototype’s too new for me, unfortunately. Dave

A Mr. Doug Stark over on the Freight Car Enthusiast FB group had this to say about the differences: Specific differences I see vs. the Athearn 60 Gunderson box: - mixed X- and diagonal panel roof (Walthers) vs. three-rib Redi-Roof (Athearn) - rectangular end corrugations (W) vs. beveled (A) - 8 side 'panels' (W) vs 9 (A) Another difference that Mr. Stark didn't mention is that the Athearn car has a post at the corner with grabs on the sides. The Walthers car doesn't have this post; thus, it has 4-rung ladder instead on the sides. For me, it is one of those "be careful what you ask for as you might just get it" moments. Despite the cast on grabs, ladders, and other details, I'll probably order couple of the AOK boxcars as they are subtly different from the Athearn Gunderson boxcars that I already have.

I would much rather have a Genesis/Tangent/ExactRail/ScaleTrains quality mode than seeing it released under the Mainline line. As others are probably doing, I am already wondering if I can slip a Genesis underframe, or at least parts of one, under it. I am also going stay away from the "stand-in's"; I already have enough Athearn stand-in's that are better detailed.

I'm guessing you mean one is accurate plus the 2 TBOX schemes, or weren't those up yet? Actually, the TBOX cars have Redi roofs (the kind with embossed ridges, like the Athearn car, rather than the combination diagonal-panel/X-panel as on the model). The roof is correct for AOK 112000-112149, so I guess that does make the AOK paint scheme the only accurate one that they are releasing at this point, or any other point, unfortunately.

" Ed, Actually Advance modelers was replacing those "Hi-Fi" drives with Hobbytown drives made for Athearn's GP7 and F7A. Nobody liked those rubber band drives. Athearn's gear drive of that era left a lot to be desired. Athearn's new drive of the 60s was a vast improvement over their older gear drive. Still Hobbytown was the drive of choice for advance modelers of that era.

THEN I had to find a shell to put on top of it. The rubber band drive had three things going for it: it was cheap, it was easy to fix, it was exceptionally smooth and quite once it got up to speed--much better than any gear drive at the time. Of course, slow speed switching was out of the question. But if you wanted an affordable ABBA set to pull a never-stopping mainline fright, they were entirely adequate. For their day. Ed

Yep, the stand-in's that I have now are mostly due to spur-of-the-moment purchases that I found out were not correct after the fact. Having a smart phone helps a lot in preventing those mistakes from happening now. In other words, it is best to do the research BEFORE you buy not AFTER, LOL. Back to the subject of this thread: Walthers has made a more formal announcement of the car on their FB page. "During our research, we found TTX has two similar classes of these big boxcars, however, earlier examples have a very different roof style. Later cars built from 2011 to 2013 use both “X” and diagonal panels for added strength, and because of this key difference, they’re designated as class XGH61." I bring this up as that adds another roadname to the list of correct models. I photographed an ex-TBOX class XGH61 boxcar patched and lettered for the Kansas City Southern as it passed through an nearby town late last year.

I'm very glad to see them announce this as while it is not the highest detailed, it just might put Athearn on a run for its money since they seem to have a monopoly (or close enough) for the TBOX. And it of course is a stand in. The value pricing will attract a lot of folks particularly newbies who don't want to spend ridiculous amounts on Athearn's RTR (that is, after everyone who calls dibs on them snags up the available stock) or Genesis models. I have both of the 2018 models on preorder, but I am waiting and seeing, and might can the Athearn orders if these are good enough as far as detail. But I can't expect all too much. It does have the correct number of ribs though, LOL.

I was able to get 2 of the most recent run and i had to work to get them. I also wish somebody could do the FBOX car at a lower price point.

The cylindrical hoppers have been there best selling cars, they're hard to keep in stock. They seem to be doing cars that have been done. However the cars that are have been done by other manufacturers available are at a much higher price, even with discount. Mainline brings the price point down so you can have the same cars, and more of them, especially at a discount because we all like those. I didn't need an extra 8 cylindrical's but in the paint scheme's they've done so far, I couldn't help myself not to. All of the cars are great looking. I've stepped back from the modern era the last few years to more 60's - 80's and I'm having fun because there's so much more available.

Yeah, maybe I'm sounding like a broken record but some nice stuff fitting that time frame. Jim, If I wanted stand-ins I would have kept my BB and Roundhouse cars since they passed the good enough test.. With my newer Atlas FMC 5347s cars I may have to go with KD 158s and that mean every car and the DCC and DCC/Sound locomotives will get 158s for uniformity of the fleet.
