After Ryan showed his scratched Southern mid train radio car, I dug out mine that I built many years ago. I built three, one for me and two to sell. It's the only time I scratch multiples of one car. I weighted it very heavy and ran it in a eighty car coal train. I ran three OMI SD60s on the point, and two fifty cars back with the radio car.

Great stuff Bobby and Scotty! It got nice briefly on Thursday (nice being a relative term, it wasn't raining!) so I took a couple shots with the diorama set up outdoors on a couple of sawhorses...... Here's the Baroid ACF Cylindrical after the addition of a Plano walkway set, some new wire grabs and Athearn Genesis 100 ton trucks, the weathering is several layers of chalks.

Bobby, great looking radio car.
Mark, that Baroid cylindrical hopper looks tons better toned down - just "right"!

Didn't the British Columbia Railway use them as well?

Did any other railroad run anything similar? The Southern receiver cars were a design unique to that Railroad, and lasted into the Norfolk Southern era. Different railroads tried different techniques during the beginning stages of using remote mid-train helpers. For example, the L&N used converted FB's and a F7B to act as the receiver "car" for the helpers. Other railroads also used retired B-units from Alco, EMD, and F-M to act as receiver cars for mid-train helpers.

Great models all.
As for me, nothing got off the bench this last week. My son "persuaded" to start building an ESCI German BR 50 locomotive in HO that has been in my closet for the last 6-7 years. It is about 90% completed with just the smaller parts to add. Building it has been interesting; it has been more like building an aircraft kit (build and paint, build and paint, etc.) instead of building it all at once and then painting.
With the Hobbytown "near" to my home going out of business, I stopped by and got three more CSX "patched" two-bay covered hoppers. I plan on working on them after I get the German locomotive off the bench.

Lots of great work here! Hopefully I will be able to provide some additions next week.
Ryan, that receiver car you showed as being from an ALCO FB is actually from a FM H15-44. Southern did not own ALCO cab units except the DL109's and PA's. It may also just be that they reused those FM trucks, I am not sure if that car used a new frame or the FM frame.

Thank you for the correction. I'm not sure where I got that information, I must have confused FB with FM.

Bobby, your radio car looks excellent. Those things, and the trains they were associated with, made a big impression on me when I was in college. I think it was the first model railroad project I took on once I started using Autocad. It was kind of funny going back to that old drawing the other day to make the 3D model. After designing some Adirondack clasp brake trucks for my Norfolk & Western C36-7 project, I realized the same sideframes with some minor changes would work for my Union Pacific C30-7 and Missouri Pacific C36-7 projects. I also replaced the cab on the C30-7 with a printed one. I found some things I want to change in this latest iteration of the cab, but after I add sunshades this one will be close enough. MP C36-7 trucks: Some awesome work going on here. Dave

Thanks, Dave. There's a whole lot of "two steps forward, one step back" in my C30-7 and C36-7 models, a lot of trial and error.

Admittedly not my best work. This thing was nothing but problems. Here it is anyway. A 1973 Belair Illinois State Police cruiser. Now that is very nice there Nova. Is that the lightbar from promotex or kibri ?.

Now that is very nice there Nova. Is that the lightbar from promoted or kibri ?. Thanks. The lightbar is scratch built from styrene, clear rod and red Tamiya transparent paint. The siren was taken from an otherwise useless Busch lightbar. I'm actually thinking an N scale locomotive bell would make a better siren, but I didn't have one. The only ready made lightbar of this type I know of is by Busch, and its way oversized.

Thanks I couldn't remember who made it looks the part.
Didn't think of using an N bell for the siren.
Be in touch.

onequicknova, not your best work? That cop car looks amazing! Thank you. It does look better in pictures. I printed the decals on white Testors decal paper, and they look more like more like stickers than decals. I also peeled 50% of the paint off the roof while applying the Scotch tape windows, and had to fill it back in with a brush.
