So did they tool two different frames? Or is the body mounted handrail not an option on this run?

So did they tool two different frames? Or is the body mounted handrail not an option on this run? Definitely appears to be 2 frames as the Walthers New Haven units have hood-mounted handrails without the conspicuous mounting holes for deck-mounted along the side sill. www.walthers.com/emd-sw1200-standard-dc-new-haven-645Appropriately for how it is packaged, Walthers' verbiage for the undec model description reads: "Features of the undecorated model include: NEW - Sill mounted full-length handrails..."

There were three permutations of frames in this run:
- standard frame with cutouts for Flexicoil trucks (open step risers)
Used on the NH units
- frame w/ full length handrails (open step risers)
Used on the CN & DRGW units
- frame w/ full length handrails & cutouts for Flexicoil trucks (open step risers)
Used on the undecs, the GN, and the IT units
Previously tooled but not used on this run:
- standard frame w/o open step risers
- standard frame w/ closed step risers

Looking at the undec SW1200 I see both AAR-A and Flexicoil sideframes with both solid (friction) and roller bearings. I hope that Walthers will be providing the same parts in the upcoming undecorated NW2. Providing just one or the other could really limit the undecorated model's usefulness.

SO I received my New Haven SW1200 this past Saturday. I like it a lot. Very smooth running, good sound, and super sharp painting and detailing. Walthers did some good things with this old shell; the die cast frame doesn't look like metal either.

Next time I visit my local, I'll have to see if they got any in, for stock.
I've already ordered several Rapidos. I believe the Rapidos are getting a plastic "deck". If so, they'll likely weigh less than the Walthers. And thus would seem inferior for use as a switcher*.

*In the real world, a single switcher can certainly pull 30-40 cars off the back of arriving road power. I'd like to replicate that, rather than use two SD7's. Which, I fuly affirm, are up to the task. A trifle of visual overkill, though.

The Rapido SW1200RS came with die-cast sill/walkways for greater pulling power (they weight in about 10.75 ounces, which is pretty respectable for a small switcher with DCC/sound installed), so their regular SW models will probably feature the same.

That's great to hear.
Thanks,

MBK have the Walthers SW1200s. Not sure when they got them in but went ahead and ordered one.

Heads up for anyone with undecorated SW1200s from the current run - check your parts bags carefully. Both of the non-DCC undecs I purchased (Walthers sku 920-48444) were missing one of two of the upper side pieces for the 930 gallon fuel tank. I have contacted Walthers customer service to provide the missing part, we'll see how that goes....
FWIW this is the same nicely tooled fuel tank assembly that was included years ago with undec and selected Proto 2000 decorated SW8/900s. I have two undecs stashed away for future use but no interest in scavenging the extended fuel tanks on them!

Mine was missing one side as well...might be an issue as shipped from the factory.

Mine was missing one side as well...might be an issue as shipped from the factory. Aha, looking like a pattern i.e. systematic packing error at the factory. I got a next-day response from Walthers customer service indicating that the missing parts would be shipped to me in 10-14 days.
