John - The paint and weathering looks absolutely fantastic! I love the worn-out look of this unit later in life.
The only suggestion I would offer on the windshield would be to consider painting the edge of the glass black to try to hide the thickness. I think the edge of the glass stands out a little in the higher angle views, but then again, I'm not sure if black would look right in this case (like the gasket around the edge of the windshield).
Thanks again for sharing all of these steps with us - truly interesting and inspiring!
Dave

I should have mentioned that the glass I made is on the engineers side. The other side has no glass at the moment. Well, there you go! ;D

Just duplicate what you did on the engineer's side, that side looks great. As does the rest of the unit...

Okay guys, It's finally done and in the hands of it's owner. Next up is Tsunami sound and lights, but that's for him to deal with. Wow, I didn't realize you were building this one for someone else. That can't be easy to part with. Fantastic model! The final photos definitely convince me that the BLI model has the right "look." Thanks again for sharing this project. Dave

She is home and will sound as good as she looks.
This locomotive is a work of art. Photos do not do her justice.
BLI seriously needs to consult with John on how the windows should look.
Simply an amazing model.

Dave I don't normally do custom work for others, but knowing its not your's right from the start eases the pain a bit.

Wow I have a P2K E6 I want to make into RI E3 625, same paint job. Just putting an E3 number on a E6 does not make it an E3, as BLI did.

This was an awesome build! The only thing that "sucks" about it is the fact that you only took two and a half weeks to complete it! (I envy you for this! j/k) Very nice job John! BTW, the Highliner pilot sets that model off, big-time!

Donnell Thanks Donnell. I don't build a ton of elaborate models, but when I do, I tend to work for hours on end for days at a time. When I get an idea in my head, I don't like to wait til tomorrow to see if it works or not. With that said, this model has to be a record for me. Mamma wasn't too happy these last couple weeks. ;D Gonna have to take a break for a bit. Maybe take her for dinner.

I'm pretty sure 625 and 626 were scrapped wearing the butter knife scheme. I don't think either ever had yellow wings. Maybe I'm wrong. 625 kept it's stainless steel sides, while 626 had a maroon dipped paint job. I believe some E3's are indistinguishable from an E6, no? Rock Island's on the other hand had the sloped roof on the rear. They also put what resembles freight pilots on them later in life. I want to build one some day, along with "Christine".

I think it was 625 that did get the yellow wings, I have a picture of it, along with the paint doing the slope at the rear will be the tough part.
I would like to have a "Christine" also......start with a P2K and the modified rocket paint or hope someone does it in brass?
AFAIK E3-E6's are identical externally, except RI's E3's.

I would like to have a "Christine" .......or hope someone does it in brass? OMI has already done Christine in brass, I know because I had one. It was unpainted and plated. I sold it because at the time there were no decals available.

Well...it's about time. I finally had the time to install the dual-567 Tsunami and 1.1" HB speaker. Of course, the lights were a real PITA. In the first attempt to install them, the light bulbs leaked light all through the nose. That's all history now. She runs and sounds as good as she looks. Hope I didn't mess it all up for ya', John. The Photo... The short clip, shot in the same place as the above photo, just after I finished programming her...

Freakin sweet! Those youtube videos sure don't do those tsunami's much justice. Nope. The small speaker thru the teeny microphone does not convey the in-person sound. Kinda like pictures not doin' 'er justice...

John and Tom: Very sharp looking locomotive. Your right, the youtube videos do not allow the full effect of the Sound system. Made me pull the Marre book out, looks like just like a perfect rendition of the struggling Rock's equipment of the 1970's.
With John and Jim's tutorials on locomotive rebuilds and enhancements, it will force us all to improve the quality of our projects.

After burning out the headlights, I had to go back and replace the bulbs and resistors. Open letter to Soundtraxx: Please offer this decoder with on board resistors.
Here she is, back in service...

Just looking at this thread again..............awesome! Thanks Donnell, I should be starting another Rock Island E unit soon. This time an E7. I've been eyeballing a Highliner nose and an old Proto E7, and contrary to what I've read online, it looks like it may work.

The P2K E6/7's roof contour doesn't match the E8's.
