I just got a notice from Walthers "Your order number such and such for Customer such and such has been completed. Yet it shows for each G85 flat car Ordered 1, Shipped 0, Back Orered 1. Not being familiar with Walthers order system, does this just mean they are just acknowleging the order I placed 5 days ago? Yeah I got the same/ similar response (2) REA flats ordered, (0) sent & (6) back ordered for to and such n' such. That's Walthers for ya, welcome to Wallyworld. Can't wait to start shaving off grabs, drilling, new wire grabs, paint to not/ close to match, weather to blend things in and I'm a happy camper. Oh and the REA cars will need the Cal-Scale air & signal hoses added along with any other yet undetermined details.

There's this photo: and this one (note location and date): Seeing that last picture, I'm envisioning these pieces of equipment in New York-Chicago service. And possibly out a bit farther to other central locations. Because they had to be transloaded off the flats, they probably wouldn't have gone just anywhere. Ed Ed, that second pic is fantastic. I had kind of figured these would have mingled with the flexi-van cars. It helps for weathering too. From the few pics I've seen, filthy seems to be the common theme.

Looks like the REA is a 60's car mainly? How long did they last in the scheme?

I had read somewhere that they were leased to the REA. When they ceased operations they went back to the lessor and were then sold to the Santa Fe in the early 70's.

That photo certainly is neat. There's the bus on the freeway ramp. There's what looks to me to be a fueling truck, just past the switcher. And then there's about the shortest bobtail I've ever seen--looks like the body is wider than it is long. And those three baggage cars. My belief is that the first (from the left) is a UP 5700-5710 car. The next a Rock Island car, 4385-4399: And last, a converted troop sleeper, owned by several roads, including NYC. All have been made in model form. In fact, once the G-85 shows, ALL of the rolling stock and the locomotive have been done in model form. HO, of course. Ed

Just checked Walthers site on the G85's. Looks like all are sold-out except 2 SP numbers.

Because I saw them in undec at Trainfest last year...and, I will say the paint jobs look sharp...Just wish they would revert back to the locating dimples for grabs...that way they can "produce" a model for both modelers who don't care about grabs...and the ones that do. Rob saw them up close and in paint...so he has the final say on that. I am glad to see the car none-the-less come to market in HO. It's another car that I though we'd never see in HO scale. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ The outer grabs is what matters the most on these cars, so the see through effect will look nice on the side area on the ends where you can look more easily as compared to on the inner ends where they are molded on.. How close are you going to be looking when they roll by to be able to notice the inside grabs are molded on? Of course, we know our models and what is separately applied and what is not. It is walthers mainline. I think for the price, it'll be a great car. So you better decide if you want to settle for those grab irons or be rowing the wrong way up the river and not have any after they quickly sell out. Actually they are mostly sold out so, i would buy the cars asap when they come out. It'll be a nice little project for you i can tell you have some modeling skills.

This is like complaining that you have to clip your own finger nails, it's not that difficult and we all already know the detail level of walthers mainline. In fact i don't really care, and most other people don't either which is why the run is mostly sold out.

Well, that IS the point of Walthers Mainline: selling to people who "don't really care".
My "don't really care" (I ordered 4, back when they were announced) arose because no one else is going to make G-85's. And there will be minimal cutting, scraping, sanding, painting when/if I correct the grabs.
In contrast, my "don't really care" has not kicked in on the Railgons (except for perhaps chancing one car) because dealing with the end grabs will be big unfun. And it will NEVER kick in on their USRA double sheathed box, now that Rapido will be doing theirs.

For the record... That NYC SW1 pix with the REA dock in the background is mine. It and many others from that era can be found at classictrains.deviantart.com. Credit is appreciated when using someone else's photos.

We understand the concept of Walthers Mainline. I don't see the problem with locator dimples, esp since it costs nothing for the mfr to make the models that way. Adding dimples instead of grabs allows the model to be sold to multiple modelling markets. I contacted Walthers to politely suggest this for the upcoming Railgon but am still awaiting a reply.

Why post images on the Internet if you don't want them to be viewed? The image in question has credits fully embedded, not sure what the problem is.

I agree. It really doesn't matter what I; or anyone else thinks. Today's Hobby manufacturer mentality is take it or leave it.

Wow.
They do look nice...I’ll get some photos at Trainfest for you guys.
Personally, I'm fine with the delay. The Rapido SW1200's have a November order deadline, too. So I might be inclined to add another one of them. I don't need to spend any more money until after Christmas (major purchases).

For the VTTX:
exshully, the container shoes are a bit large, and the real ones sit on top of the crossmembers, instead of wrapping them. Can't imagine why they didn't follow the prototype.
Perhaps because it's Mainline.

I doubt we'll get a top of line model of these cars now with Walther's on the market. They'll suffice in a small TOFC train from the Crab Orchard and Egyptian Railroad...interchanging to the MoPac at Marion, IL.
It's amazing what TOFC flat cars are out there now; compared to a decade ago.
