More precisely, the Athearn cars that are a foot too wide are their Roundhouse 50' FMC boxes EXCEPT the 5347, and their Roundhouse 50' P-S, EXCEPT their 5277.

Ed, The BB ACF (aka Railbox) boxcar is also a foot to wide.. I notice this when I had my collection of Athearn and Roundhouse short line IPD boxcars and IIRC the 57' reefer is a foot wide too as is the BB ACF covered hopper..
If one looks down the side of a long cut of these cars from a "ground" view they are uniform.
Reread my post.. I was referring to the Athearn and Roundhouse cars as being to wide and I said the "Bachmann's "Silver Series" 50' ACF boxcar is a knock off of Athearns BB ACF(aka Railbox) 50' box" not the Walthers.
I had one Walthers ACF 50' boxcar and IMHO they a step above the BB ACF 50' boxcar.
I had to go down to the garage and dig out the ole 5250's. Didn't know I had so many. More stuff to practice my weathering on! I couldn't find the 57' reefers. I know I have a few, 'cause I lettered a couple in GN WAY before Athearn did.

These cars were pretty much trashed by the members of the Steam Era Freight Car Group, not correct in any way to the cars done by Westerfield.
Their suggestion, don't reserve and don't buy. Al Westerfield is going to contact Walthers and see if they can be fixed.

Rule 1: This is my railroad. Rule 2: I make the rules. Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!

I received an email concerning the single-sheathed cars. The references will be changed to "40' Single Sheathed Boxcar with Murphy Ends" to get around the fact that the car is a model of an XM-1 boxcar instead of a USRA boxcar for at least this production run. No decisions apparently were made about future production runs and/or if they would tool a correct single-sheathed USRA boxcar down the road.
I wish Al Westerfield the best of luck in contacting Walthers to see if improvements can be made to improve the line.
Any update if Walthers is going to correct any of these cars?
At least the single-sheathed "USRA" boxcars will not be corrected this run. Too bad they did not add roads such as L&N, B&M, or even the WAG so that the cars would be correct for something.

Ain't it just like Walthers to churn out the foobie paint schemes while ignoring the handful of railroads who ACTUALLY had that kind of freight car. Sigh...
There was lots of talk on "social media" with regard to inaccurate schemes. One big one was Walthers planning to do a blue Lehigh Valley boxcar when the prototype was in fact green. Many Lehigh Valley modelers expressed concern to Walthers with a zero response from them. One modeler also noted that on Facebook, Walthers has removed "view other member posts" in which you could see posts to the Walthers page from other modelers.
I am not sure what is going on with that company, but they certainly seem to have taken a turn for the worse sadly.
Actually, Walthers DID respond, and they DID say it was a mistake in the artwork, and they are green.
To be fair, I recently contacted Walthers as well to politely point out some errors on another of their models and they replied nicely in a reasonable amount of time. They suggested they would be correcting the errors in a future run. So it seems that Walthers does indeed respond and take feedback & correct where practical.

Something to remember with all the manufacturers, not only Walthers: just because an email was sent doesn't mean it was to the right email address, that it got through the spam filter, that it got to the right person, and that the person is in the office and has time to reply.
