I'm trying to decide how unsafe my wallet is... So far I ordered a C&O but the non-yellow ones are tempting!

These cars are very tempting, but the folks at Rapido have emptied my wallet for the foreseeable future.

I’m being tempted by the BN, and maybe the NP (would it work for the early 80s?)

...the NP (would it work for the early 80s?) No. The NP cars had already been repainted BN by then. The BN version on the Moloco site appears to have a reweigh date of 11-79--perfect for that era. I do wonder how it is that both GN and NP appear to have had cars specially built for P&G service, when there appear to have been no P&G warehouses in the Pacific Northwest. Ed

Kinda dig the NP scheme. Wonder what would still be hanging around in that scheme. Although my era does swing up to 78, but trying to focus on 82

Nick, got any prototype photos for the NP rbl? www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=96197Try this one Jim. Quite late really in that scheme. In Stockton, CA, close to Polk, CA the location of a P&G plant. NP obviously was part of the nationwide pool, they actually accessed the plant via Southern Pacific, whereas the GN cars accessed it via CCT. Not sure if there really is any difference. The NP schemes lasted until 11-79 and 1-80, when they got repainted by Havelock, which most RBL did on the BN. Havelock greens at the time were a brighter green. Nick

If you're anything like myself, a little era drift 1978-1980, I put aside one the NP car 97125 and have BN 748124, that way you can have both, due to the 11-79 and 1-80 repaint dates for the BN cars. YES, they are different on of our models. Best, Nick

Ed Ed, In fact GN and NP were part of the P&G pool, as well as WP, but they had NACC xpost RBLs with 12-foot doors. There was a P&G plant in Sacramento/Polk, CA depending on the return route between the two. so to outline them; GN (previously released cars) had a return location as Sacramento, CA via CCT NP had a return as Polk, CA via the SP (not on the car but from NP Railway assignment sheets Not knowing the exact rail layout of this area of CA, I believe that each accessed the plant from opposite direction. Ed, maybe you can shed some light on that. Nick

You can find more information including some track arrangements in the CCT book written by Dave Stanley and published by Signature Press (could be out of print, but shows up on ebay regularly). Warning; a VERY dangerous book if you have a soft spot for RBLs and Alco switchers.... Bernd Adelsdorf, Germany

If I were guessing, which I am, I would think there would be different routes for the GN and the NP cars because they traveled on different railroads. GN would likely want their cars to go on WP, through Nubieber, and connect with GN there. NP would get nothing by that routing, and perhaps wanted SP to deliver to Portland.
I suppose GN and NP ended up supplying cars, not because P&G had warehouses in their territory (which they apparently didn't), but because the P&G shipments traversed their rails.
