That cab misalignment on 5809 looks pretty rough. I have 3 undec ATSF versions, and they don't have that problem. On the other hand, those brake cylinder/shock absorber setups are wrong. On ATSF, the shock absorber under the brake cylinders were not there when originally ordered, but were added by them by the 90's. When that happened the brake cylinder had to be moved forward about 8" to clear the top mount for the shock, and the piston rod had to be lengthened also. And with the brakes modeled in the released position, it may be a little tough to fix, although, it could. Definitely take more time to fix then the stepwell area for CSX.

As has been discussed before, there was a mistake at the factory and the correct side frames without the extra shock absorber will be made available by Rapido for those that request them. rapidotrains.com/warranty/product-support/ho-scale-ge-b36-7-supportI have 3 undec ATSF versions, and they don't have that problem. I know that, but for the ATSF version they were added later and are not correct the way they did them, unless they make the correct version for the ATSF. As it stands, this version is NOT correct for anything that I know of as of yet. Whether or not the brake cylinder is in the right spot for the later version is irrelevant. The only reason there is a snubber there at all is because the factory screwed up.

Whether or not the brake cylinder is in the right spot for the later version is irrelevant. The only reason there is a snubber there at all is because the factory screwed up. As Delivered from GE, brake cylinder above axle journal: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=820007www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3220735www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=820006After second shock added by ATSF in 89/90, notice location of brake cylinder has been moved: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2319752www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3672343So you say Rapido did the as delivered. Close. If you change the side frames, then it will. Actually, the second Shock did not appear until the -8 series came out, so ATSF probably decided to add them to the -7's. Another thing wrong, the ATSF had a different speed recorder on the lead axle when delivered, then changed it later on to the one that's on the on the side frame now. Greg

Anyone need any other measurements or photos of these areas if I am able to get out there? Do they still have class lights? How about a center-to-center measurement, and a measurement of how high they are above the walkway? Alright, I was able to measure 5834 and 5843 this weekend (they're back to back on the deadline, still in deteriorating YN2 paint). Both have circular class light blanking plates in what I assume are the original class light locations. That being said, I had the exact same result for both units: Class light center-center: 57.25" wide Class light center-walkway: 48.25" high Class light blank diameter: 7" A profile gauge on the nose radii on both units produced consistent measurements between 5-6" for the vertical and horizontal radii. Areas measured: Nose top: Sides, center (in front of sand fill), and bisecting the corner vertically. Nose front: Vertical radius, measured horizontally. I have step well measurements and will post a few pics later, but for now, the side of the sill that cuts inward is simply the thin sheet metal bent at a distance of 11" measured upward from the bottom edge. The angle created measured at 10° from the vertical for both units at the front and rear stepwells, so it was consistent. The bottom steps have a depth of 12.56" from the kick plate and they end flush with the vertical sill channel. The kick plates are 6.31" high at the back of the step. I never noticed before, but there is an angled steel strip above the kick plate (3.75" plate spanning the stepwell) and it is a separate piece. 5843 had these, 5834 was missing the piece up front, but the diagonal weld could still be seen on the side of the stepwell. Perhaps a repair? The little step nub on the end sheet is 3.75" high and it sticks out from the end sheet vertical side 1.5" to protect the leading edge of the bottom step. -Mike

As to the B36-7: I already rolled my own last year. Just need to finish the handrails. If anyone wants to get rid of their incorrect Rapido FB-2 sideframes after the replacements arrive, PM me. I'm positive they're better than the Smokey Valley sideframes I used. I already destroyed all 20 of mine trying to get the snubbers off without using CA debonder. It was therapeutically enjoyable, even if a complete failure.

Conversely, a poster on another forum stated about his Conrail units: "A quick twist with a hobby knife popped those right off." I’m suspicious. I’m sure he was saying that to minimize the complaints of those who are frustrated with the factory faux pas. Of 20 snubbers, I successfully “easily” popped 4 to 6 off with the part intact, but even on those there was CA residue left in the bearing adapter cavity that would be very difficult to clean out and make look good, without debonder at least. The rest were attached for life such that they came out in about four pieces when it was all said and done. There might be two or three roller bearings that would look acceptable with a little digging and cleaning out. But there was some serious glue action going on on my models!

I’m suspicious. I’m sure he was saying that to minimize the complaints of those who are frustrated with the factory faux pas. Obviously a Rapido fanboy! Definitely. If it's a positive experience removing a few snubbers from a model, it's obviously some fanboy trying to downplay the severity of the issue. It can't possibly be because that one person managed to remove them from their one or however many models with minimal fuss. I already rolled my own last year. Just need to finish the handrails. I'm more suspicious of why someone would continue on to destroy all 20 sideframes on brand new models (without yet having replacements in hand) after removing a few and finding their removal efforts to be a failure. Or for that matter, continuing without even trying to remove them with CA debonder while being aware of the possibility it might work better than continuing one's failed efforts. Surely it would be better to leave the snubbers on in the interm than have "destroyed" sideframes on all one's models, nevermind for some reason needing to return or exchange a unit to your dealer and sticking him with a unit you intentionally damaged that he can't resell.

Not to mention that that particular fanboy has no hesitation about taking a knife to fix something. It shows throughout his railroad model of a specific New York area.

Further showing how far up your own a*s your head is. Bennett (delta) does exquisite work. I’d put his up against Banna or anybody else’s I’ve seen online. The guy’s got skills. They’re his sideframes, he paid princely sums for incorrect product, so unless Rapido requires them to be sent in for trade, what do you care?

Obviously. Very likely I was 0 for 20 while he was 100%. Totes. Probably because I got no chisel-pop skills and they obviously used different glue on his models.

Because it was literally fun. And I wanted to. I’ve had minimal luck with a 100% successful experience with debonder against Chinese factory adhesives in situations similar to this type of parts joining/bond. Not enough success to stop me from the fun I was having. They made a cool sound as the dried gallons of glue sheared apart. I felt it was more productive than a long walk off a short pier, which ironically, is what I wish you’d do. Tomorrow night I’m going to smear boogers on the too-large nose radii and come here and tell you all about it.
~ Surely it would be better to leave the snubbers on in the interm than have "destroyed" sideframes on all one's models, nevermind for some reason needing to return or exchange a unit to your dealer and sticking him with a unit you intentionally damaged that he can't resell.
The only models I return are Athearn’s continuing insults to the prototype modeling hobby. Everything else I model into submission. I find humor that half of your position is based on the presumption I’d return models I purchased having seen production photos and “stick” a dealer with them intentionally damaged. That’s like me calling you a dick for how you’re not going to let grandma cross the road in front of you.......tomorrow.
Your posts are weak. And it’s sad you like to give guys crap JUST because they’re trying to push/pull the model railroading hobby just a little further from its toy train roots. I’m not interested in the threads you would contribute to. So I don’t read or follow them. What’s wrong with you?

Ok, there are times I have experienced issues with Athearn products, but the post above is crossing the line way too far. Athearn has absolutely nothing to do with Rapido or Rapido's products or Rapido's factories, so I fail to understand the need to go there and bash Athearn. I'm not even an Athearn fan, but plenty of their Genesis products are simply outstanding.
Is it time to lock this miserable excuse of a thread? It's degenerating into name calling.
How about somebody show us some real modeling? What a novel concept!

How about somebody show us some real modeling? What a novel concept! Jack Please tell me about this simply outstanding Genesis product. I’m curious. And then I will counter it with 5 Genesis products that have easily-preventable research mistakes (many of them major) that some entry-level models from other manufacturers don’t make. There was no need to go there. I went there to illustrate the fallacy of making a point using a completely unrelated presumption. Just like there was no need fo you to respond. But you did. The pained cries to have a thread locked where the view count keeps cranking up, including by those crying for a lock are hilarious! Do you voluntarily walk into a store and yell “I’m not interested in your products. You should shut down!!”?

Actually it was the post that seemed to bother the poster. And you can't know if the post bothers you until you read it. The whole "if it bothers you so much why did you read it?" is so late 90s Usenet. "If you love it so much, why don't you marry it?!?"
