If the selling price is the same shipping can't be that much different and if a $2 difference is too much, you're in the wrong hobby Based on suggestions posted here, I paid about $35 less for the Centipede than I would have from the three retailers I referenced. (Thanks) Plus I wouldn't have seen those $88 GG1s.

Even though the thread is a couple of years old, the considerations for shipping costs from big retailers still hold value. While TrainWorld, MBK/Model Train Stuff, and Factory Direct Hobbies may have had similar pricing for the Broadway Centipede back then, it's important to note that shipping policies and offers may have evolved since. If you're still in the market for model trains or accessories, it's worth revisiting these retailers' websites to see if there have been any changes in their shipping costs or customer loyalty programs. And if you ever need reliable auto transport services, you can always rely at www.a1autotransport.com/military-auto-transport/ expertise. Best wishes for your train collection endeavors!

Worse than getting jacked on shipping & handling fees from an on-line purchase, is being charged for state taxes which upon verification with the state franchise tax board have no record of the vendor in their system. Collect mo money scheme.

while they should just not collect that tax, I can see where it's too much work for smaller outfits to keep track of every sales tax jurisdiction in every state they sell to when maybe they only sell a handful of times to that state. Here in NY it's bad enough, between the train shows and the car shows I have to keep track of about a dozen sales tax jurisdictions - and not just county, some cities have their own rates.

Lombard hobby, $14, with the price of gas I save two hours or so on a round trip. And my car doesn't get great mileage so I come out ahead here. Always packed great, and the one time I had a problem, they were fantastic. Rapido mislabeled the SW1200, I wanted maroon/block lettering, that's what it said on the box but it was red/speed lettering. I must have been the first one to point this out to them, they sent me a SW1200 with the paint, lettering I wanted and a return label for the wrong loco. Plus you get some delicious Welch's Fruit Snacks!!!

That said, if I can justify a larger order, I sometimes justify the shipping and order.

You are lucky in Kansas and Missouri the rates can change from block to block even in the same city. Our company was building a new CVS and the rate on the next parcel over was different from our location. Rick Jesionowski

Collect mo money scheme. Ditto ... and some states (like mine) have a waiver policy that the remote sellers must have sales into the state that exceed over 200 instances or exceed $250,000 total per year.* I would guess exceeding that in a single state is wishful thinking for most (all?) online model railroad retailers. If so, charging sales tax is absolutely an extra profit for the online retailer, in my case, and anyone else in my state. Some don't do that ... Lombard Hobbies. * Even if you considered someone like a Lionel - the sales would have to be individual sales to consumers. If they sell high volumes to a hobby shop or other retailer, that sales tax is exempt, because the hobby shop or other retailer re-sells the product to the consumer in that state (no double taxation).
