Your mileage will obviously vary, but I have used and tried hardware store paint for years on modeling projects, and outside of track, I have always been disappointed. I have never gotten a good coat to lay down right because the tips suck and spit paint, not to mention its not as nearly fine of a pigment. That’s the one thing I really loved about Scalecoat- their rattle cans spray very well. No one else came close.

Well, you need to check Tamiya spray lacquers. Although they're more expensive, there is absolutely no comparison to Krylon brand paints. They lay down very fine and exceptionally smooth.

That’s good news to me! Black and car colors would work but finding a good CR blue isn’t. Too many brands of non RR specific paint is either too dark or too light. Tru Color is ok for new paint but that’s it. Rustoleum sail blue is almost dead on as I tried it several years ago, but I don’t like how it sprays. Hopefully that void gets filled over time.

You can decant the rattle can paint into your own jars then spray with an airbrush.
Turn the spary can upside-down & release all the propellent 1st(!). Punch 2 holes in the can & pour out.

Very true but not sure how long it would last in a jar. I don’t have an airbrush now anyway. I do have enough SC rattle cans from 2016 that should last a while hopefully. Only one was partially used- the others never touched - yet. Just concerned about down the road. Anyone have an idea the shelf life of rattle cans vs bottles??

I cannot believe that NOBODY in the model railroad community has spoken with the owner of Minuteman Scale Models to find out what is going on? Did he pass away? Is he going to sell the product line, Etc.....

In the fall of 2021, I ordered some paint from him and paid for it and was waiting for a shipping date. I sent several emails about where is my paint with no responses back. Finally, I got an email from him saying he did not have all of my order and was waiting for pigments to arrive so he could make the paint. He then said I should get my order within a couple of weeks, well that time went by with no paint yet, emailed again with no response back. Finally, I sent an email cancelling my order and demanding a refund, again no response. About a week later he emailed me back saying he had been out of town with family issues. He had read my emails and said he would refund me for my order amount. Well, one week later and still no refund, sent another email to him that i was reporting him to PayPal. Next day I got an email that a refund had been issued to my account. Very unreliable, I feel I was lucky to get a refund. Good luck if you had paid for paint and never got it. I told myself I would never deal with this person again. I shopped around and finally found my paint. Too bad, I really like using Scalecoat paint better than anything else. Another product we will probably never see again.

And most of us can understand family issues but sometimes it’s an easy out because no one would ever question that either. Hopefully in the near future we all will hear from him if there really is a legit issue but it seems highly unlikely. Not after this long. What el3625 went through is a red flag.

If you want to stay in business, there's no excuse for not answering email or calls in a reasonable time. It's not like these small model companies are getting dozens of inquiries each day.
People hate not having information.

Exactly. I don’t get these folks who disappear into thin air or that the hell they’re thinking. That’s the epitome of poor customer relations. All those people helping keep you in business and that’s how you treat them?

I just saw that post too. Hopefully the issues folks had ordering and such will be resolved as soon as they can do so. Good news anyway. I’d love to know (don’t we all?) what really happened and hopefully we find out in due time.

I am curious- whenever my LHS doesn’t have items in stock, including paint and decals, he orders from Walthers and usually gets them in quickly. Do they still have Scalecoat in stock or are they out also?

On a Facebook page I think it was, I read that someone had a friend that new the owner Shawn. Apparently he has a history of running business's into the ground. A recent quick search also revealed what appears to be a few small claims court cases, but I didn't dive into those. Sounded also as if there may have been a potential buyer for the paint side, but that fell through. So at the moment, we won't see Scalecoat in the near future........ Dave in A

Shawn’s other company is called blackdog designs and is marketed as a furniture builder. I found him through thumbtack back in November 2022 and signed a contract with him to build a piece of furniture for me. I paid him 1/2 of the total amount as a deposit with a January 2023 completion date. He picked up my materials in Dec 2022 (worth about $1000) and since then has been giving me the runaround each month. His site on thumbtack has since been removed and website taken down and as of late has not returned my messages. I just want my stuff back.
The first delay he said that he was moving shops and would get started once that was up and running. His new shop is located at manchaug mills in Sutton, ma. The next month he said he was caring for a family member who was in hospice and was only in the shop a few hours a day. The next two months he said no progress was made and then that he two large cabinet build outs ahead of me. This past month, dead silence.
It seems like he has several complaints on bbb for minuteman scale models and it looks like he took a ppp loan during covid for 20k. The whole thing smells like a scam/fraud.

Greenoakdev, might be worth pursuing legal action if you do have a contract with him.

Please excuse the perception of any tone here as that is not my intention. Those tiny hobby cans are a ripoff, hard to find and get shipped at reasonable prices. I don't understand the general insistence railroaders have to only use hobby venue paint. I have posted several examples of successful applications using fullsize Krylon spray paint cans here through the years. Purchased from your local hardware store at far more sane unit costs, no shipping hassles/expense and works very well right out of the can. I've nearly given up on all hobby brand paint and dullcote as it had all gotten too difficult/expensive. Just not worth it anymore. Yes, I know Krylon et al do not make all the unique railway colours, so my comments only apply to the more common close enough/red/white/black/dullcote. Various box stores have extensive colour lines, so in many cases it's easiest to accept something close enough. I would rather not retype everything I've learned on this but I did post it all here before. Best bet if interested would be to take the time to pull up my threads from 2019 and 2020 for details. Re-reading this whole thread, I know Rustoleum also has good colors too that don’t need to be mixed but SC has the best nozzles for a spray can. No one else comes close. Otherwise I wouldn’t care as much as I don’t have nor can afford an airbrush set including a not so cheap good compressor and I don’t plan on needing to paint that many models to even warrant getting an airbrush set. Just my thoughts.

I know some guys who paint brass as a primary income, the dwindling scalecoat stock combined with more work piling up is creating a lot of anxiety.
