They are multiplying! The clean 5018 will become 5022. This image also shows the stark contrast in the base Trainman shell vs the one detailed with the Cal-Scale kit. Another kit is on its way for the next model, but maybe I should finish one before starting the next... Speaking of finishing the model, does anyone have a source for the headlight / numberboard clear castings for the RS32/36? I chipped the rear numberboard on 5018 pretty badly, and the "new" 5018 has black numberboards for some reason. I could sand them clear and repaint white, but I'm still down a numberboard. - Jackson

You might check with That Train Place on eBay. He carries quite a few Atlas parts.

I looked on his eBay store and didn't see any. Maybe I'll shoot him a message.

kentuckysouthernrwy win70rob Thanks! Got the locomotive back together for the most part. Wired up the LEDs, I lit the number boards and headlights separately by cutting up the stock light pipes and installing new 3D printed headlights by scalesoundsystems. I'll grab a photo of them later tonight, after I fix one of the rear ones that decided to not work on me... Also added a few more details to the front and trucks, still need to build the handbrake linkage, and finish the airtanks, then the trucks and fuel tank will be ready for paint.

That speed recorder cable looks a bit too long. How did you fade the paint? The new Rapido D&H RS11's are way too dark.

Atlas may have parts for these in a year or so, they announced another run of these fairly recently.

Yea, I plan to snip it off and replace it with some more durable semi flexible wire. For the blue paint, I mixed up my own batch of faded D&H blue from Tamiya White, a touch of Tamiya Grey, and I think Tamiya XF18 flat med blue. The paint was very thin and I applied it in thin coats with an airbrush until I got the color I wanted. I'm sure this would work on the Rapido RS-11s as well. For the rest of the model I just used a white grey in the same fashion. lvrr325 I saw that, hopefully they do. I need another 2 sets of all the details. I bought a third RS-36 at a show a few weeks ago An aside about paints, I have recently tired the new Gen 3 AK Interactive acrylics, and oh mannn they are nice. Very good coverage for brush work. I haven't done any airbrushing with them yet but I'm sure they will perform just as good.

I didn't realize/forgot that you had painted this model. Was thinking it was factory paint. I want to fade a factory painted B&M Geep I just bought. No airbrush, though.

Oh sorry I was unclear, it is factory paint I just did a fade. I like fading models with a color lighter than their base color instead of a standard white or light grey. If you want to fade without an airbrush very thin "Glazes" are your friend. There is an armor modeler on Youtube by the name of "NightShift" that I get all of my painting pointers from. He uses glazing alot when painting figures.

Not much work to update, but here are two photos with the lights lit up. I decided to go with one white numberboard and one black numberboard on the rear. As delivered the RS-36s had black numberboards so I thought it would be a neat detail to include. Next I need to finally tackle the fuel tank details and handbrake chains on the front trucks that I have been putting off.

Although progress has been slow, I'm still working on the RS36. I have replaced the stock horn with a Athearn brass part, thank you csxt8400 for reminding me to do it! I have also changed the orientation of the speed recorder to more accurately represent the prototype. I snipped off the orginal cast wire and installed a piece of electrical wire from a old Athearn "grain of rice" bulb. Its flexible enough to not break when the truck is rotated but stiff enough to keep its shape. Next up is to paint the sideframes and the fuel tank grey. In the era im modeling 5018 the lower half of the locomotive was almost entirely black with dirt, so a light coat of grey with some chipping and then weathering should work nicely. I also need to tackle the handbrake chain... Will probably have to 3d print some mounting solutions.

I haven't done any airbrushing with them yet but I'm sure they will perform just as good. I just dribble them right out of the bottle into my airbrush's color cup. My current regimen is to prime with Stynylrez, color with AKI3d, gloss under and over decals with VMS gloss and finish with AKI ultra matte varnish. There has been huge progress making acrylic paints and finishes actually work. I need to mention two USA companies that are right at the front; Mission Models and Pro Acryl (Monument Hobbies.) One thing from Mission Models that I use almost anytime I do color is Polyurethane Intermix. This seems to work the same as the resin used in AKI3d gen. There is a brand new resin based formula for Vallejo Game Air and Model Air which I'm anxious to try. Not that I need any more paints!

I have been meaning to try the VMS varnishes and their metal prep, maybe ill get some this weekend. I use Vallejo varnishes now, they go on really smooth and make a great matte or glossy surface. I have heard good things about Mission Models paints, but much to your point I dont need any more paints right now. wagnersteve surlyknuckle Thank you!

It has been awhile since my last update... Finally getting the truck sideframes, fuel tank, and air tanks painted. Primed with Vallejo black surface primer, and they sprayed with a custom mix of Tamyia Flat Black, Gray, and Flat Brown to get a dirty black color. This unit got new trucks sometime in the early 1980s, and they were never painted gray to match the locomotive. I sprayed the tanks black as well as a preshading step. I then used Gray Abteilung 502 oil in a drybrushing manner to mostly cover the tanks. I think the effect looks pretty good, although the gray oil is a little blue in tone compared to the body gray. Lastly I weathered the area with a mix of more oils, AK washes, and dry brushed acrylics. Next on the list is to add some final details to the fuel tank, handbrake chains and hardware, and get the correct wheel slip castings for the front truck. Rapido has a very nice part that they included on their RS18us that I might be able to get extras of.

3/23/2024, close to 8 p.m., EDT
On the eve of Palm Sunday, I'll say amen to what Karl Scribner wrote about your modeling, jacksong1218.
Personally, I prefer less weathering on such a beautiful paint scheme, but that's purely a matter of taste; and I believe in the old Latin maxim, de gustibus non est disputandum, which translates as "there's to be no arguing about tastes".
