Thanks guys! Any car built on a low deck flats would have the ramps. On a low deck car, the draft gear basically sit on the deck, so the ramps are there so the cars can drive over the draft gear. The upper decks flair up toward the ends to compensate for the ramps as well. On some low deck auto racks, they would raise the entire deck with a false floor instead of just ramps on the ends. This would allow the use of a standard rack instead of a hinged deck rack. The downfall being the car is taller overall. I've seen these low deck flats like I modeled being refered to as East Coast flats, since they are shorter in height. Click here to enlargeOnequiknova, thank you for sharing your wonderful work. I have three questions. (1) Are the dimensions and structure of Tri-level cars different on the east and west coasts? (2) How did you color yellow, red, and gray differently in your work? (3) Are the stanchions on the top rack sewing needles? As far as I know, the dimensions of the rack itself are the same. The extra clearance came from being on a low deck flat. Whitehead and Kales built this same style of rack in non hinged versions for use on a standard flat car. The car was built and painted in sub assemblies. The middle deck and uprights are one assembly and the upper deck and flat car are separate assemblies as well. The car wasn't assembled until after painting and weathering. It would have been much easier to build the model as one unit, but paint and weathering would have been a nightmare. Here's a picture before I started adding the gussets and bracing. The stanchions are indeed sewing needles. #7 I believe.

Onequiknova, thank you for your detailed reply. The product will never be released at this level of perfection. Outside of Dabney's Law. The photo is an Accurail product (Accuready) I bought 20 years ago. I sigh every time I take this out of the box.
