Anybody know if the new/newer/newest run(s) of the Athearn SD40 are still based on the RPP tooling, or has it been re-tooled? If I recall (open to feedback), the primary complaint on the Athearn RTR SD40s (and GP35s) were the chunky hood latches and door profiles?

Hope, they improved a bit. I don't think they ever did a run of the RPP tooling with cut levers, MU hoses, and sliding windows.

They are totally new. New cab (thank god), the long hood has nice latches and DB representation now. Much better to start from.

I think the 98000 series have the new body. I usually look at the battery box area and the top of the nose. If the battery box door is full height (does not end below the walkway) and the radius between the sides and top of the short hood doesn't show a seam, it's new tooling. I like them better than Kato because of the easily removed fans and fine railings.
