As much as I like Athearn, reusing the front range tooling for a genesis model just seemed so odd. I believe that's a myth, but the truth is worse, they cloned the Front Range tooling. Yup, it's a myth. I dropped $10 (plus shipping) to buy an old Front Range casting just to double-check, and it's not a match for the Athearn. And, yes, it does appear that Athearn sorta copied it (and did some changes after the first run). Maybe both were based on the same inaccurate drawings. Ed

Ed Is it weird that I bought a set of A-line brass steps for front range geep, and it fit the genesis geep pretty much perfectly?

Athearn made the same mistake as Front Range in doing the radiator air intakes. Theirs was pretty much a copy. But definitely not an exact copy. Ed

Opening a model and going "meh" happens more often than not for me and I think it's really the result of pre-ordering. When you wait on something for 1, 2, 3 years and within that time you are studying pictures of computer generated renderings and pre-production samples portrayed in the best light possible, about the only thing you can hope for when the actual model arrives is for it to meet expectations. A big part of the "new toy" excitement is long gone long before it ever hits the layout.

I think part of the problem is we are getting used to real nicely detailed models right out of the box. Stuff that wowed me 10 years ago is expected as the normal now. Last week I received my Moloco NP 50's box car, a beautiful model, but it didn't make me say "wow". It was exactly what I expected, which in a way is saying "meh".

I scored a Yoder O scale 44-tonner for a good price a few months ago. I thought they were supposed to be the best. When I took it out of the package and saw the hoods are too wide, well, meh!
