I thought if I could find the patent application for the Enterprise ballast car longitudinal discharge gate there might be drawings contained therein. I'm looking for the postwar version used in the 50's. Google hasn't been much help. Anybody here better versed in patent searches than I?
I have a 1957 CBC that has a small section on longitudinal hopper cars. There are a few photos, a couple of not too well lit detail shots, but no drawings of the gates themselves. ~ Walt

Thanks! The first one is a discharge gate for a covered hopper, like a PS-2CD or Center Flow. The other does concern ballast doors and is interesting in that it compares the two designs.
I have a couple of Atlas ballast cars in hand with an MDC on the way (not that I expect it to be terribly accurate), and a set of Bowser ballast car gates also en route. Hopefully between these, the CBC photos, and some well-lit shots of CN cars in the Canadian Freight Car Gallery, I'll be able to suss it out.

Well I'll be ... found a detailed, dimensioned drawing of a CP longitudinal hopper (which is what I'm modeling) in the CPHA archive! Probably enough info in the drawing combined with photos and extant models to figure it out.

Patents rarely have any good drawings or measurements of any use. Typically they are generalized as well.
They can be an absolute nightmare to search for also, being most patents were filed under personal names and "assigned to" companies, which are hard to pickup in the search boxes. The titles can also be all over the map.
