Never took the time to compare them, but the Bachmann gon is not the same as the P2k? Looks like the ribs don't go all the way down? Nope, slightly different. Ed

I'm not saying all Bachmann is junk, although it certainly has never lost that reputation among many modelers. They're just inconsistent, you'll have this silly snap on "center beam" and then a Spectrum steam engine that looks almost real. Why the prices are so high for pieces that the tooling and even the updates on it surely have been paid for ten times over now, who knows.
Most people look at those prices, then look at the used stuff I sell at shows and buy a used engine and cars for under $50 for everything. My cost on the cheapest low end sets is around $110 for an engine, three cars, a circle of EZ track and a chintzy transformer. They go up from there.

Bachmann used to generally be junk but I've heard they have upped their game in the past twenty years. Nevertheless, I steer clear of anything Bachmann anyway.

However, their steam releases in various scales larger than HO have been good models. Their HO steam is like so much Bachmann, very uneven. Their consolidation was a run away hit toward the end of last century. Their electrics have been generally good even though almost all of them have a Bachmann blunder or two.

Aside from both having fishbelly sides, completely different cars - the Bachmann car is 2' shorter (50'-6" IL) and has two fewer side panels than the Proto 2000 car. The prototype for the Bachmann car is older (1930) vs. 1940 for the first examples of the Proto car.

Always mystifies me as to why Bachmann will only produce one number per road name on most of their HO locomotive offerings.

Always mystifies me as to why Bachmann will only produce one number per road name on most of their HO locomotive offerings. I think someone from Bachmann answered that on this (or another) forum. The owner doesn't see the value in running multiple numbers (except in some products). They are changing their ways and adding multiples to some cars / paint schemes.

Also keep in mind their catalog / website "retail" prices are laughably overinflated. Dealers / retailers do offer significant discounts off list. Some of their modern stuff is really well done, especially for the UK side of the house. I had no complaints about the VIA venture set I got (other than the cab car is delayed until at least Sept).
