I finished up the weathering on my Penn Central GP9 from Walthers. This is the latest GP9 from Walthers as is a Phase III GP9 with all of the fans 48" in diameter plus the sidesill is different than earlier phases. I picked up an undec from my LHS, assembled it, painted it Modelflex black and lettered it with Microscale and PCRRHS decals. I weathered it with pencils, Pan Pastels and airbrushing. I really like starting with an undec (PC was not a roadname offered yet) since the undec comes with a long hood for a non-dynamic unit and a hood for one with dynamics plus lots of different detail parts. The fans are plastic but are very well done. The undecs do not come with a horn so I added a Cal-Scale one. I replaced the plastic Sinclair antenna with a metal Cal-Scale one, windshield wipers from KV Models, and a fuel gauge from Details Associates.

As usual...you nailed it. Inspiring! Just curious if you know the Walthers stock number on the Phase 3 undecorated?

Those engines keep getting better and better. The fans used to be a weak point, but those look pretty darn good.

I picked up the 4 MILW units from this Phase 3 run, with the trash can spark arrestors. I think they are very well done.
Two now have Scale Sound Systems speakers, and the other two will soon. I think it makes a big difference.

I see Walther's didn't fix the rear side radiator grill mistake. The radiator grill should stop over the knuckle buster, not before it. All the other Proto geep's were correct on this. This is the only version Proto messed up on.

Tom another great looking model! Makes me want to go back in my timeframe to have few of these in N&W. I think the Walthers Phase III looks pretty close to me: www.rr-fallenflags.org/pc/pc7164ags.jpg

Tom....are you applying decals directly onto the Modelflex, or using any other brand for gloss and flats? I haven't airbrushed Modelflex yet, and am curious what PSI you prefer? Thanks in advance.

Another nicely done PC model!
The Walthers model really captures the look of a GP9 well.

Tom....are you applying decals directly onto the Modelflex, or using any other brand for gloss and flats? I haven't airbrushed Modelflex yet, and am curious what PSI you prefer? Thanks in advance. The finish of Modelflex paints varies from almost flat to an eggshell finish. I always apply a gloss finish prior to decaling. In the case for this locomotive I used a 50/50 mix of gloss black and engine black. It is probably shiny enough to decal on but I still give the surfaces to be decaled a spray of gloss. I have been using Winsor and Newton Gloss and Matte acrylic paints as my clear finishes for a couple of years and been very satisfied with them. I do not thin them down before using. The Gloss and Matte can also be mixed to get the final finish that you want. I usually just use matte but if the car or locomotive is relatively new I use a mix of gloss and matte. They can be purchased in larger volumes so they are much cheaper than the typical model railroad paint bottles. I use about 15-20 PSI when I spray but usually just adjust it so that it feels right. I usually do not thin Modelflex but sometimes I add a little bit of distilled water to it. If it is a little thick I use a thinner that was described in Model Railroad Hobbyist. I also do not spray Modelflex any different than other acrylics that I use and even mix Modelflex with other acrylics such as PollyScale or Vallego. Finally I often hear that Modelflex dries up quickly in the bottle but I never had that problem and have used paint that I opened years ago that is still read to spray.

Thanks everyone! I would like to reiterate the use of the Winsor and Newton clear acrylic finishes. I first read about in a Bernard Kempinski's blog and ordered some right away and have been happy since then.

Definitely like it far better over any spray bomb clear coats I've used in the past.

Where is the best place to get Windsor & Newton varnish? Artists supplu stores will have it. I use Dick Blick because there are stores in my area but they are also quick with mail orders.

I'm switching over as well. As I age, breathing less lacquer and lacquer thinner, even in a well ventilated area, has to be a smart move.
