D&RGW purchased 50 cars from Bethlehem Steel car in 1968, series 55500-55549, these cars were nearly identical to the SCL's G-5 design. The RG's 50cars were likely used in mineral service on branch lines in Utah and Colorado that served many smaller mines. Plate C Model Prototypes has produced a 3-D printed version of this car 3dcentraltrains.com/collections/freight-cars/products/1105-01-drgw-bsc-1746-gondola and while attending the Bridgetown Prototype Modelers meet on 10/4/24 I picked up their kit sku 1105-01 from their nicely stocked booth along with the correct decals from RailTrain Hobbies railtrainhobbies.com/collections/gondolas As kits go, this one is pretty easy as the body is one very well done piece, to which you add the weight, floor and the provided metal detail parts, maybe two hours of build time, I work slow! Here's the built up "B" end and underframe. Here the finished model has been given two coats of Tamiya Black plus some TCP Clear Gloss. One side done, the decals are nice and thin, but a little fidgety as they want to curl a bit. Another side plus the ends to do, then on to some weathering - next week!

I see the same thing happened to you that happened with one kit from my order - you got the SCL carbody with the reinforced top chord and other details packaged in the DRGW kit box. I noticed when I started cleaning up the bodies prior to assembly, and found they were different. 3D Central has promised a DRGW replacement body, so I'm not too worried about it. I'm sure if I finished it up with the Rail Train Hobbies decals and some weathering, not many would notice.

Yup. Here's the DRGW kit, with the narrow top chord, with the two bumps above either side of every post, and the retainer valve(?) located on the left side. Also note there's no hole in the side sheet, and the bleed rod goes under the sill. 3dcentraltrains.com/collections/gondolas/products/1105-01-drgw-bsc-1746-gondolaAnd here's the SCL version - it has a taller top chord that angles up above the side grabs, fewer bumps on top (only one above each post), retainer valve under the sill, and a hole in the side sheet two panels closer to the B end than the retainer valve (which is located under the sill). The bleed rod goes through the side above the sill, although on your kit you located as per a DRGW car. 3dcentraltrains.com/collections/gondolas/products/1105-00-b-ochessie-o-90g-20-and-o-70g-21-gondola-copyThe differences are subtle but they are there. As I indicated earlier, I may not have noticed if I only had one kit. And again, 3D Central has promised to make good on my kit.

Nice job by you and Plate C on the gondola. Too bad about the 3DC mix up on the kit though. I like how Plate C decided to use the stirrups laid out the etchings so that once bent they have the proper depth. Other recent designers lay them out in final form so the end result is a flat 2d stirrup that does not look right is easily prone to bending.
I am waiting for proper B&O decals (pre-Chessie) for the Plate C gondolas.

Nice work, Mark! Gotta love Rio Grande gondolas. Shame about the body mix-up - I will have to check my two kits and confirm I have the right ones. Let me know if you have any feedback on the decal sheet - I haven't had a chance to use my own decals yet.... :-)

Regarding the art, I'd note the position of the 5th digit of the car number on my models vs. the decal sheet artwork. Based on a photo of the prototype in James Eager's Morning Sun book of Rio Grande freight cars the 5th digit does get located on the next panel, separated by a post. I've emailed 3DCentral regarding this, including the pictures, we'll see. I'm a bit unhappy about it, but realistically things like this do happen, I'm certain the Earth will continue to revolve.

Thanks for that note on the car numbers, Mark. All my photo reference shows it located on just two panels, but not surprisingly there are variations out there. I do have some prototype pics posted on the listing page for anyone who is interested. RailTrain Hobbies - DRGW BSC 1746 Gondola -Rick

Yes, sorry to see the mixup after you're that far along I didn't catch it looking at small pictures on my phone!

The detailing on the underframe is fantastic!
@adam: Are you going to eventually try making a boxcar?

Unfortunately life hasn't allowed me to wrap up the last little bit yet, but it'll get there. The last little bit being finishing laying out the etch artwork and a few loose ends on the body mounted brakes for the MKT (and later UP) version of this car. (And there's a covered hopper at nearly this same stage of completion)

Obscure for sure, but I certainly did note them on Donner Pass back in the day.

Just think it very important to note that I did email 3DCentral regarding the incorrect car body and that they have responded very favorably - excellent customer service on their part.
