10/25/2024, about 3:19 p.m., EDT
These were at the firm's website as PDF pages with short videos; I saw the former shortly before 10 a.m., EDT. So far have watched only one of the very short videos, presumably also on YouTube. No items decorated for the D&H. All are HO, with pre-orders due 11/29/24 and ETA of April 2006.
I am not sure how to post a link to the website postings and hope someone else will post it.
I'll sust summarize and then offer a few comments.
Athearn Roundhouse:
"Phase 1 early" F7A units: Boston & Maine 4266 and 4268, Clinchfield 800, Conrail 1826, CSX 116 and 118: Metra 305 and 308, Reading and Northern 270, Rock Island 676 and 677, Seaboard System 116 and 118 at $144.99 DCC-ready. Athearn 2024 at $129.99 DCC-ready and $19.99 as a holiday ornament that can hang from a tree.
"50 ft Exterior Post High Cube Plug Door Box Car": 3 numbers each for Canadian Pacific, Chicago & North Wester, Coe Rail In., International Bridge & Terminal, Laurinburg & Southern, at $29.99 per car.
Athearn:
"FMC 4700 Covered Hopper": 2 single numbers and one 3-pack each for Burlington Northern, BNSF Railway, First Union Rail and Wilbur-Ellis Company, at $49.99 for an individual car, $129.99 per 3-pack, plus "Primed for Grime" Chicago & North Western and Kyle Railroad, at $5 more per individual car and $15 more per 3-pack.
"60 ft Berwick Box Car": 3 numbers each for Conrail, Norfolk & Western, Norfolk Southern, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific, at $43.99 per car.
Athearn Genesis:
"GATC 2700 Airslide Covered Hopper": 3 numbers each for Canadian National, Colorado & Southern (Burlington Route), Conraiil, Diamond Sugar, Nebraska Consolidated Mills, Pillsbury, Redpath, Southern, at $54.99 per car.
"4-8-2 MT-4 Steam Locomotive": Southern Pacific 4351 without skyline casing; with skyline casing four paint schemes, as follows: SP 4362, tender with small Southern Pacific Lines; SP 4365, tender with large Southern Pacific; SP 4361, tender and cab with Daylight colors; "Legendary Liveries" SP 4354, tender and cab with two-tone gray. $509.99 each without sound, $609.99 with Tsunami2 sound.
"EMD SD70ACe Diesel Locomotive": BNSF Railway 9937, 9345, 9663; CSX 2090 and 2091; Electro-Motive Division demonstrators 71 and 72; North Shore Mining 671, 673, 674; "Legendary Liveries" CSX "Bright Future 4835 and 4843; Santa Fe 400 and 407. $259.99 each without sound; $350/00 with Tsunami2 sound.
The ones I personally find attractdive are some of the F7As: the B&M units wearing the same numbers as ones that have quite recently been restored to their original appearance and the handsome Reading & Northern, plus several of the single-bay Airslides, especially the Diamond Sugar (St. Lawrence Sugar Refining Ltd.), Nebraska Consolidated Mills and Redpath (Dominion Crystal Sugar) cars -- those three being among the earlier leased Airslides with GATX double inverted diamond heralds -- and the Pillsbury ones. I'm not at all sure that the Canadian cars came into the USA..
P.S. I was able to get my "Modeling Matters" material for possible use in the December issue of the Bridge Line Historical Society Bulletin in just before today's deadline of noon, EDT. I had to skip covering some things i would have liked to but ran out of time, and it's unlikely that all that I wrote will be printed.

Athearn’s critical tooling inventory continues to be deemed near-worthless by predominant toy train paint and lettering art that’s no better than it was 20 years ago.

Roundhouse F-units are all ready up $15?! Make that $28! The original Genesis F-units weren’t this high… I’m still going to buy a few, but man…

Curious what the biggest offenders here are, outside of the airslides there isn't a single thing for me so I haven't really looked in depth.

An Airslide or two might be tempting but as I'm modelling '57 I don't think I'd need too many more. Is there any good history on Airslides out there, in particular the early years?

I could go for a pair on Conrail F-7's. There is only one number. I wish this one was offered with the other conrail version from August announcement for $28 cheaper. Anyway, a response in the Athearn August announcements from SPSF stated that a Conrail F7 in the genesis line is not off the table. For $145 these are already getting overpriced. I can only imagine what the price of the conrail Genesis F7 are going to be when they get announced. I hope its soon because I will be disappointed if I have to not order over sticker shock

More foobies. And Christmas tree decorations. WTF? Freelanced paint schemes are offered based on customer requests, which in some cases outpace the requests for prototypical schemes.

Is that the same way they justified all those New Haven and B&O DD40s back in the 1970s? I guess what they say is true, what's old is new again, or vice versa.

If things get too pricey with Athearn, I have a 3D printer (both resin and FDM), cnc router, laser cutter, milling machine, and Silhouette Cameo 4 (to create paint masks among other things) to make them into something much more than what they are currently. I started down this path probably over a decade ago but did not have even half of the resources that are available today! I like what they did with the upgrades, but take a marketing clue from Scale Trains Operator line! Donnell

Before spending much time and money on an old Athearn F7, I recommend comparing the curve of the roof with a Highliner. I recall the Athearn F7 and the Atlas FP7 not matching in this regard, so one of them would then be wrong. The Athearn is a good bit older. For further fun-ness, dig out an old Varney F3.
If I had any of these handy, I'd do the work. But I don't.

In the 1970s they added additional paint schemes to models to try to sell more of them to people not modeling specific things. It was an industry wide practice, AHM once imported a run of the Mehano light pacific that included a Conrail blue version. I had one. Today it's worth about 2-3 times what the more realistically painted ones are.

some of the airslides are tempting Yes, but several of them have been done in the past. There's so many schemes that have yet to be done on these cars; one wishes that Athearn would do a few more that have never been done.

Correct D&Hs might be nice (lettering too large at least on a previous run). Have they done Erie, EL, or LV (number of schemes)?

In the 1970s they added additional paint schemes to models to try to sell more of them to people not modeling specific things. That's it, exactly. Having a few more paint schemes to sell helps to more thoroughly amortize the cost of tooling and the increasing costs of doing business in China. There are people who just collect models and to them the foobies represent another road name to collect. The rarer, the better! Like the Conrail steam engine you mentioned. But aside from the collectors, I tend to think few if any actual "modelers" are calling up Athearn and asking for faux paint schemes. Can you imagine, say, Bob Rivard wanting a Soo Line DDA40X? Or Lance Mindheim a CSX SDP40F?

Here's a price list for Athearn in 1971: hoseeker.net/AthearnBrochuresAds/athearnpartslist1971pg1.jpgThere's a B&O DD40, but no New Haven. NH got an SDP40, remember? Keep in mind that these models were researched around when the prototypes were first produced, perhaps before, for some. There WAS no DD40. And the SW1500 most definitely did not look exactly like an SW7/9/1500, though it wasn't unreasonable to assume it would. I kinda remember an EMD advertisement in Trains magazine that showed it looking like that. Just as they were predicting what the new EMD prototypes would look like, they were predicting who would buy them. Very freely, admittedly. Ed

The Super Power F7 was $12.95 in 1971, according to Ed's document. One inflation calculator says that's $102.59 today. Athearn wants $145 for the equivalent model today. The one painted and lettered for Athearn is "only" $130; Do the licensing fees for the other road names cost $15/per piece?

The one painted and lettered for Athearn is "only" $130; Do the licensing fees for the other road names cost $15/per piece? That and the past pieces done with Athearn schemes didn't sell that well. One has to remember too these are just a slight step above kids' toys and as such fantasy schemes may appeal more to kids, or people who don't care that much about prototype accuracy. Which there are plenty of out there, I have even had to swap Kadees back to X2Fs for a customer once at a show.
