Here's a comparison between the Athearn Roundhouse F7, the Walthers Mainline F7, and the Globe F7

There appears to be a bit of wide-angle ballooning. But the bit above the windows still looks way wrong to me. Again: what's the point of this? Ed The point here is that the old tooling wore out and had to be replaced from scratch- while keeping the tooling and expected MSRP costs low. Took the opportunity to make a few quality-of-life improvements such as what other have noted- windows, chassis, removal of steam generator. But the intention was to replace the blue box tooling, not compete with the Genesis shell. Separate number boards would have added too much complexity and cost for the scope of this (including labor cost). Also we have a problem with the Genesis number boards being installed crooked. They cant be crooked if they are molded on. Hope this sheds some light.

The black shell is Athearn, not Globe. Globe didn't have the nose light and as mentioned before, had separate number boards. Also, the windshields were better.

I believe mine (Pan Am) cost $94, which seemed reasonable. Having a lightboard with hardwired pickups from all trucks is nice, especially with a 21-pin receptacle and output tabs to connect a speaker if you want to go with sound. Only real downside is the new metal chassis will only fit the old Athearn B-unit body. Athearn originally said the new chassis would fit any of the prior body shells.
