Well after taking photos of my Southern boxcar I took some photos of my recently completed L&N blue 40' PS boxcar. The car was modeled using a Kadee kit car, painted using ModelFlex L&N blue, and then lettered with Microscale's relatively new L&N boxcar decals. The biggest modifications that the Kadee car required to match the L&N car was to remove the roofwalk and lower the ladders. This required plugging the holes in the roof with stretched styrene and then filing them down. Plane roofwalk brackets were then added. Removing the roofwalk, lowering the ladders, then painting in the simplified L&N scheme makes this car for a mid-seventies prototype.

Looks like the ones I saw when I worked for the Clinchfield.

Nice work!
The blue over spray on the roof really sets it off...

Hey Tom,
Your car looks beautiful, and the paint finish is excellent! What is the secret with getting a good finish with ModelFlex?

DonnellI have a Pasche double action airbrush and simply thin the Modelflex down a little (~10%) with distilled water. I never seem to have any problems spraying and getting a good finish with Modelflex.

Tom....nice car. If I might ask, what product did you use for the final flat finish. I ask because with Dullcoat, over the lighter colors like gray and your L&N blue, my experience is after several years of age it gives the original colors a "yellowish" cast.

Bob Actually I do use Dullcote. I mix it 50/50 with automotive laquer and then spray it on. I have not experienced any "yellowing" over the years. Sometimes on the sides of the car my mix is 3 parts Dullcote to 1 part Glosscote. -Tom

Tom.....thanks for the feedback. The "yellowing" I mentioned is on UP models I custom painted for a local modeler 30+ years ago. We recently reviewed some of those models to a raw paint chip from the same time frame and the Dullcoat had definitely given the gray a yellowish/brownish tint. Now, what I don't know is if maybe he had these sitting where the sun hit them for years. Bob
