A brass Palace Car Company import. Its part of a five car set of the Great Northern's Red River. The Red River was a five car streamliner that ran from St. Paul to Grand Forks, North Dakota. It consisted of an RPO/Baggage, three coaches and a coffee shop/dinette/parlor/observation.

I don't mind, we needed some new stuff to talk about now that we've run out of things to say about the new NTS releases. And besides, Jim's latest posts have mostly been about actual modeling, which is something this board hasn't had enough of lately.
I have made some notable progress on Crocodile GE, I'll take a picture or two in the morning and post it to the thread then.

With all the Summer goings on, I've not had too much time to get to the layout room, much less get new photos made. Tonight is different. It's cold out there. Good day for model trains... Another shot of the fabulous E-8 #654 on the Quad Cities train at Tinley Park. Right behind the Quad Cities train is this mixed freight. It's actually the wayfreight returning from Bureau. A platform shot of the wayfreight. I didn't like the way it came out at first. The view is growing on me though.

In tribute to UP announcing the return of a Big Boy to service I thought I'd include a pic of a classic UP power lineup... Both shot on my friend's 'work in progress' British outline layout.

Nothing finished this week but some in progress pictures as I am one of the clowns that Jim mentioned. I purchased a set of decals from Highball Graphics for a P&LE Boxcar and he had labeled it for a PS1 boxcar. In searching the Canada Southern site I felt that using the Branchline 1000B (8' Door Full Fishbelly side sill would be a better match) Also it would have the proper Despatch Roofs and Ends as these cars were built at the Despatch Shops. I substituted a 10' Door from the Scrapbox and used some left over short ladders from IMRC PS1 boxcars to match prototype photos on Fallen Flags. As the car had a cushion underame I added DW Extended Coupler Pockets. Still have to complete some of the detail and extend the door tracks to accomodate the 10' door. I purchased a couple of Alco Centuries off HO Interchange for a good price, they did not run until I changed out the drive shafts with the new all plastic ones from Bowser. The orginal owner had added the detail but had not touched up the paint, I will be doing that and adding the numbers in the near future. These pictures were taken on the Stongsville OH Club Layout. I've been on a steam kick lately. Even though it doesn't represent much of what I run, I purchased another Overland Models tender and had it redone to reflect the paint scheme of the current one. That makes two and that's all I need for the Challenger (and one day Big Boy):

Looks like we're on a roll this week. It was late when I finished up early this morning, but the track and B&B crews got the bridge over Lime Creek in place for #456 to pull the first train across it. The bridge is an ME kit, with two 30' spans supported by a modified tower. I tried the tower assembled per the kit instructions, but it was just not right visually. Too much tower and not enough abyss, plus I'd need to hack one of the 30' spans into two 15' spans with a 30' in the middle. The visuals just weren't working like this. It was an easy hack to slim down the tower with some judicious cuts. Here's a side-by-side. Here's #456 testing the work! Gotta do something about those pink mountains soon...

Nice modeling all. This small yard office will be used on Slate Creek as a crew breakroom..I still need to add a chimney and fuel oil tank..I achieved the weathering effect I was looking for-old and weather beaten since SCR will be tearing it down some time in the future and replacing it with a new metal building.

A bit of progress on Crocodile GE. I've finished up the details on the cab roof, including the antennas, the (unused) AC mount, and most significantly, the double layer cab roof. I also made sure to bend up the corner of the top layer, since I still have yet to see a prototype picture of it in MNNR red without that corner bent. I also came across some high-res prototype pictures that showed the steps are actually treadplate, not perforated, so I went and re-did the steps with Cannon etched tread. Looks like I forgot to seat the cab properly when I took the pictures. Oh well.

The current Tinley Part Station on Metra looks more like a medieval castle than a train station.

NO models so far today, but here is a nicely weathered GTW GP38 on a transfer run with autoracks entering CN's Cody yard that serves the GM Delta Ass'y plant home of the Traverse, Acadia and Enclave. Winter windows still in place on the 26th of July. No fancy tenders but we have a couple Challengers on the Kentucky Southern, here #2002 sits idle in the yard. The Clinchfield had Challengers in Kentucky and Tennesee, here one is serviced at Johnson City, TN

A brass Palace Car Company import. I have two brass Palace Car Company imports. They are nickle plated Pullman Standard baggage/dorm/chair cars as used on the D&RGW Prospector and later the Rio Grande Zephyr. I was going to have Dean Ebner paint them but sadly he passed away. How is something like this painted? I assume below the windows the sides are left plated, and the window strip painted Grande Gold. Roof was aluminum I believe. One of the models is a deskirted version with the dorm windows blanked out, the other is as delivered.

The above picture from James Griffin's website is deskirted. Thats the more common of the RGZ combines. The first brass one I ended up with looks like the one below (no skirts and no dorm windows). The other has skirts, as delivered and used up until late 1972. Got TONS of pictures of those cars in my Rio Grande books. I've never painted brass. There must be a way to prepare it and some paints must work better than others. Thats more what I'm getting at.

I've never painted brass but recommend that you start off by masking off the part to be left metal and the scuff up the rest to promote adhesion with very fine steelwool, or if available a find texture of sofa blast. Then prime the area to be painted, side and roof with a light flat primer. Let that all set until you can't smell the paint, or bake it. Remove the masking first. To paint, remask the stainless, after thoroughly washing and drying it off. Do the gold first then totally dry or bake after removing the tape again. Re tape, hit edge with light spray of the gold to lessen bleed thru let flash off then spray the roof color. Untape, dry or bake. If gloss coating for decals retape the stainless first them follow your usual procedure from there
Some folks 'pickle' their brass by soaking it in a fine mild acid bath but I'm not sure about that for plated brass.
My $.02

Great work guys! I especially like Mark R's Baldwins. No modelling once again this week, still having too much fun scanning old negatives and slides. Developed the black and white myself, never printed the negs, they have been aging quietly in the closet for 30 plus years. The fellow on the pilot with the cigar was quite a character... I've painted brass successfully with a good cleaning with TSP or TSP-substitute. That should be safe for plated or coated brass. I would be wary of any abrasive on such a finish. Rinse and dry well. Prime, then go from there. You may be able to get away without priming if using some of the better acrylics, but I'm always wary about getting good coverage with anything close to yellow. I've also had good coverage with one coat if primed, but not so much luck with just two coats of finish.

I've been working on several freight cars to get them close to completion. Six total cars of varying degrees of detail, though two of the car types are duplicate kits built to different, or repainted prototypes. Accurail USRA gondola - Georgia K17 rebuilt with top chord will become Georgia 20418, white lettering on boxcar red car body Accurail USRA gondola - Georgia K17 with wire loading anchors Georgia 20409, white lettering on boxcar red car body Atlas USRA Rebuild - C&WC 8221, O-14-B (lacking decals), Special Oxide red with Jerry Glow decals Funaro USRA 4D-XM-1, constructed from F&C kit, undecided Georgia number since these were largely rebuilt by my modeling period Wrighttrak Seaboard Air Line G-10, stock kits, but mine were absent of all of the grabs and photo-etch, so I am adding after market parts from my parts bin . I have two kits one of which will become SAL 91009, a former MD&S gondola constructed by Magor and re-lettered in 1960s era Roman stencil font, and the second will become SCL 890250, a black and white G-10 repainted at Waycross in 1969. Sorry. I'm a little late to the party. Getting everything ready for the St. Louis RPM. Got nothing really new but here's a car I never did show. Started as an undec Athearn airslide. Decals were made by Dan Kohlberg. home.mindspring.com/~paducah/photo by Timothy N. Alund, on Flickr
