It has been a little while since I last posted some shots of any of my models. So here is one that I recently finished. This is one of the earliest Penn Central boxcar schemes and it was painted at a former NYC shop using left over NYC green and lettered with short lived black lettering and logo: I modeled the car using a Brancline 50' kit that I added a new sidesill and a wider 10' door that came from an Atlas boxcar. The car was painted with Pollyscale Jade Green and then lettered with Microscale PC decals. I spliced together two 40' roofs to come up with the roof. I am not sure if it correct as these cars were stretched from 40' cars and sometimes the roof would be made from the original 40' roof plus some extra panels from a diagonal roof. Plano roofwalk supports were also added. I then added some weathering. I always thought these were some of the ugliest looking cars but still it does look prototypical in my PC freight trains!

Tom...another very nice car, as you usually do. Question.....now that Floquil has discontinued the RR paint products, do you have an idea of what paint you would use if you did this car in the future? Of course I realize you may have a "stash" of PC green. Bob

Sweet! It has a massive look too, as if it was a real box car shrunk down to HO scale.
What I like best is the weathering. This to me is approaching perfection. So often I see weathering that looks like someone slung mud on the side of a box car, this looks more subtle and faded. Used but not decrepid.

Great work Tom!
Yet another example of your fine craftsmanship that I want to replicate for my collection. Keep them coming.
Your speculation about the roof is probably accurate. It’s hard to imagine the Penn Central having enough money to buy “new” roof panels when spare parts were available.

Very nice: it is an excellent conversion. I agree with Jim, the subtle weathering really helps make it. Bill

If that doesn't work I would use Scalecote paint as they gave GN gree which if it is Glacier Green then that should be good enough for NYC green,

Its in the Pullman Green family. Here is a photo of an actual GN steam locomotive in the Glacier Park scheme. www.gngoat.org/gn2555.jpgI'd look into Tru-Color Paint. They have TCP-43 - New York Central Jade Green and TCP-44 - Penn Central Green. Tru-Color sprays like velvet and gives a fantastic finish.

Tom
That is an excellent weathering job in addition to the great model. Very Nice!

I'd like to learn to weather like that.
